SPT 2.1 Cubic Feet Energy Star Upright Freezer, Stainless
Our older house has limited refrigerator space in the kitchen (unless we rip out some overhead cabinets). When we replaced an old fridge around May 1st, we decided to buy a "supplemental" freezer. After reading multiple reviews on multiple sites, we settled on this freezer. It was small enough and "light" enough for me to muscle it into the basement. It did take several hours to cool down after plugging it in (just like the instruction manual said it would), but we've been using it since May 1st and have had no problems. Because some reviewers of this size freezer (but not this brand) had problems with things staying cold, especially with frequent opening, we keep a pint-sized plastic bowl filled with ice cubes toward the front. So far, the cubes haven't melted noticeably. They serve as a warning system plus give me some cubes in the basement when I'm working down there so they get replaced periodically.Noisy little freezer. Found one mounting bolt for the compressor missing, one not tighned down. Manual incorrect with settings of temps. This freezer runs almost constantly. Temp inside rises quickly when power is off. I question the amount of insulation used.

GE GTS18CBDBB
- 2 Adjustable Wire Shelves
- Gallon Door Storage
- Crisper Drawers
- Upfront Temperature Controls
- Optional Ice Maker
I purchased a General Electric Profile refrigerator on 7/27/08 from Best Buy for $2281.23. It had been working acceptably until about the middle of April of 2012. We called GE repair and GE sent out a technician on 5/2/12, but he didn't have the part so he couldn't fix it the first time he came out. On 5/4/12 he came back out and did a few things including replacing parts WR55X10956, WR55X10490, and something called a REFER MAINBOARD Pkg. He said at first that he was sure it was the mainboard. The charges for the parts and labor was $324.91. Then when it wasn't acting the way he expected, he said he thought it might be the compressor but that we could wait to see if what he'd done fixed it. He ordered a compressor just in case and scheduled an appointment for 5/14/12 and told me if I got the compressor he'd come get it.. The refrigerator allows the consumer to set the freezer and refrigerator temperatures. We set them for the temperatures that GE recommends. The next day the refrigerator was maintaining the freezer and refrigerator temperatures so we canceled the 5/14/12 appointment. When canceling, we told the GE support person on the phone that he'd ordered a compressor to be delivered to my house. The support person said he'd canceled that too. Several days later we received the compressor that had been theoretically canceled. We never heard from the GE repair man about coming to pick up the compressor.
On 6/30/12 we noticed that the refrigerator was not maintaining the set temperatures so we called GE again.
They gave me an appointment for 7/6/12. Today he came out again but told me that they had not allowed him enough time to replace the compressor so he'd have to reschedule. The first available time for installing a compressor is 7/16/12.
I think GE is responsible for manufacturing a lousy product and having awful support of the garbage they manufacture.

Samsung RF197ACPN 18 cu. Ft. French Door Refrigerator - Stainless PlatinumSams
First the love.. if you've been looking for a counter depth because you don't have much room in your kitchen then this, at the time of writing, is pretty much the only option. All of the other fridges made up for the depth with crazy width. The prices are also double for counter depth. This one is not. I live alone, so this is plenty of space for me. The platinum is also the best thing to ever happen. It looks like brushed nickel, which I will take over shiny stainless any day. Stainless is also the worst when it comes to showing fingerprints. I've had this fridge for three months now and open it with smudgy hands and have yet to even clean the front of this thing. You can't put finger prints on it.
The not-so-much-love.
The Handles.. so far, really so good. But alot of people have complained they fall off. The freezer door handle popped off the first time I used it but now I make sure to open with a specific motion and it's okay. We'll see after a year.
The plug is a straight plug and you need to leave a few inches in the back making this not exactly counter depth anymore. Maybe this is the case with all other fridges anyway, and while it's not counter depth, maybe it's still a few inches better than the others.
The adjustable shelves are not so adjustable. They give you barely an inch of discretion. You can put a SMALL Brita pitcher or a 2L bottle at the bottom of the door at an angle but you will not be able to put them in the regular shelves unless you remove one, decreasing your storage capacity. this was a major annoyance for a week and then I just got used to it.
The scary.
This fridge makes about six different kinds of noises. It's not nois-Y, but it has a different noise for kicking in, for when you've closed the fridge door, when you've closed the freezer door and then a random.. i don't know what. So far it works perfectly but I am constantly in fear that one of these noises should not be and that it's going to break. The scariest sounds like the edge of a fan hitting something plastic for a split second and then it stops. It was sudden and startling when I first got it but am now getting used to it.
So, that's the scoop. I want to love it unconditionally but only time will tell. It was the ONLY option for my kitchen when factoring in depth, width, my budget and the color. Power cord issue:
The installation instruction taped on the unit shows a flat wall plug (90 degrees, with cord hanging down) but it does NOT come with this type of plug. Instead you get a straight power plug adding to the depth of the unit. The diagram is misleading to the plug you receive.
Also in the manual on page 4 under the title "Safety Information" it states: "Connect the power plug in the proper position with the cord hanging down. If you connect the power plug upside down, the wire can get cut off and cause a fire or electric shock." The manual is misleading to the plug you receive.
I contacted Samsung and this is what they said:
"We have cross checked the refrigerator model and found that it does come with the straight power plug.
However, we would like to inform you that the recommended clearance behind the refrigerator is 2 inches."
I would like to put only 2 inches but it is not possible with the straight power plug.
I contacted Samsung again and they said there was nothing they can do. They said they switched manufactures and this may of been a change. Samsung gave me their parts department (3rd party), however they do not sell a flat power plug for this unit.
I also posted a similar comment on the Samsung website, but they choose not to publish it, wonder why?
Buyer beware: If your buying this for space saving then reconsider. It came with a straight plug as opposed to a flat wall plug (90 degrees with cord hanging down) so it makes the unit sticks out about 3" as opposed to 2". Yes, it's only an inch but every inch matters. We bought this fridge only to discover that it makes REALLY LOUD buzzing sounds on a regular basis. The sound is so loud it sounds like a fire alarm we can hear it throughout the entire house and wakes the baby up! It is tremendously annoying and makes us doubt Samsung technology. I do not recommend this product.

Letter to Consumer Reports:I bought this SAMSUNG RF266ABRS fridge because it was recommended by Consumer Reports in August 2009. This fridge and other SAMSUNG fridges should be taken off the recommended list because there is an inherent design defect that causes ice buildup on the evaporator coils.
First there is a rattling noise as the fan hits the ice buildup.
Then the noise stops when the ice completely blocks the fan but then there is no more cooling happening.
There is even a class action lawsuit against SAMSUNG fridges:
Please look into this Samsung ice buildup problem. The Samsung fridges should definitively not be on the recommended list but put on the "do not buy" list. The ice buildup issue occurs about 1 year after purchase. SAMSUNG is not acknowledging the problem and does not help its customers.
Letter to SAMSUNG:
I am deeply unsatisfied on how SAMSUNG handled the warranty policy with my SAMSUNG Fridge French Door Model RF266ABRS. This fridge was defective starting Year 1 and was not repaired appropriately the 1st time. All was done on the 1st service visit was to defrost the evaporator not fixing the problem itself.
Of course, the problem reoccurred 1 year later and every year after that. Since the technician explained the problem, how to solve it and SAMSUNG customer service gave me a hard time because it was a few days over the 1 year purchase date, I dealt with it personally by unplugging the unit and let it sit unplug for 24 hours. Not a satisfactory resolution, just a quick workaround, until I got fed up with losing food and asked for SAMSUNG to resolve this problem once and for all.
First this problem should have been resolved the 1st visit. Secondly I learned recently from numerous complaints and videos on the web that this is a defective design in SAMSUNG fridges that causes the ice buildup on the evaporator.
Here is a video showing the defrost sensor modification kit to fix evaporator ice buildup. This is for the SAMSUNG RSH1 fridge but it is the same modification that was done on my fridge by the repair technician who came to my house:
Many SAMSUNG fridges have the same cooling design thus sharing the same ice buildup issue.
I was charged $104.68 to fix SAMSUNG own defective design! This is outrageous and no decent company would shift the cost from itself to their customers . It shows utter disrespect for its own customers, not counting the monetary damage. Sir, should I remind you that your customers are your most important assets and should be your priority number one!
SAMSUNG should have done everything in its power to help its loyal customers by fixing its defective fridges FREE OF CHARGE.
The technician explained that he had to move the defrost sensor away from the evaporator in order to let the defrost cycle run longer and completely defrost the evaporator from any ice buildup. He also put a wider drain clip. The older clip was too small. It would get iced up and not let water drain away from the evaporator. There is also a new metal clip that attaches to the heating element and goes inside the drain clip to heat any ice there if needed so the drain cannot get clogged. In addition, a new seal kit put on the market by SAMSUNG 3 months ago was used to seal the evaporator compartment to prevent moisture to get in and improve circulation airflow provided by the fan. I bought this refrigerator in January from a well known appliance company (S...rs). I say this because I buy tons of stuff through Amazon, but in the following tale I want to make clear that the problem was not inept installation on my part. The shiny new refrigerator was delivered and installed. That evening, I bought $374 in perishable groceries; plus I transferred my child's $1300 in drugs into the refrigerator. Next morning I realized the refrigerator wasn't cooling. So I called Samsung and worked through their troubleshooting process. Samsung agreed the refrigerator didn't work and directed me to call the retailer, whose repairman inspected the unit and diagnosed the problem: Shipped without coolant. Can you believe it? Was the coolant-installer absent from work that day? It gets better. The appliance company exchanged the refrigerator two days later, but of course the food and drugs were spoiled. Now Samsung is limiting the food cost replacement to $200. And, get this, the reimbursement process has now been in the works for 4 months. The latest hitch: Samsung says, gee, the repair ticket (which contains the repairman's diagnosis of "no coolant") is not enough, we need more proof that the refrigerator was exchanged or repaired. Alas, the appliance company doesn't issue receipts for those kinds of replacements. I have now spent probably 4 hours talking to 6 different Samsung "Executive Customer Relations" CSRs. That latest said he thinks he can process the claim with what I have submitted. We'll see. Summary: if nothing goes wrong, swell, but if it does, Samsung's "Executive Customer Relations" may leave you hanging.

GE PSHS6PGZSS Profile 25.9 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel Side-By-Side Refrigerator - Energy Star
This is the first refrigerator with an ice maker, and water dispenser I have ever owned, and so far it being almost one year old has been a great machine. Even with an ice maker I have seen a reduction in my electric bill by almost 20$/month, some of which could be due to my new TV also. Nonetheless water/ice and a reduction in elctricy usage was a nice surprise. Lots of room in this fridge, could easily accommodate a very large turkey, and for a family of 5 we have plenty of room for what we need to store. The only Con, (which is not really a big deal for me) is that with the glass shelves they show all the dirt off, so if you want your fridge to look spotless you will find yourself cleaning off the shelves frequently. Spill proof is what they call the shelves, and that is kind of misleading, the ledge around the shelf will catch small amounts of liquid, and therefore makes it easier to keep clean, but you could easily spill enough to go over the edge of these shelves. Overall I am very pleased with this refrigerator, and would buy again.
12/27/11 I was thinking that there was one important thing that I left out. based on some expert advice i bought and used a surge supressor with this refrigerator from day one since it is run by a computer. Other websites had recomended this to protect the circuits use to regulate the refrigerator.
6/25/12 Still extreamly pleased with this refrigerator, just put in second new water filter about 2 months ago. The vegatable drawer is nothing short of amazing it keeps the stuff fresh far longer than I would expect, more than double the time of my old fridge. In my opinion my GE Profile side by side has been the worst refrigerator that I have ever owned. Most all of the drawers have cracked, along with the rails that hold them. The ice machine never works properly. I have had the entire water valve fail and flood my floor and ruin everything inside the refrigerator---need I go on because this isn't the end of my problems with the unit. I will definitely never purchase another GE product. I have also written to GE about this product but did not hear back from them. I feel like I got stuck with a big lemon.
Buy GE PSHS6PGZSS Profile 25.9 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel Side-By-Side Refrigerator - Energy Star Now
We bought all GE appliances when we remodeled a few years ago. The diswasher, stove and microwave were all fine, But I would never, ever in a million years buy a GE refrigerator again. There are a few good reviews here, and to them I would like to say "Congratulations! Either you got one of the rare non-lemon machines, or your refrigerator has not yet fallen apart." But the bad reviews are all the same as what I've experienced, and you will find many, many, many more of them when you visit other review sites.
From the start, there has been a leak inside the refrigerator, where it connects to the ice machine. Huge chunks of ice build up there and have to be regularly pried off with a screw driver. The extra liquid pooling where it's not supposed to be also creates a black mold buildup ijnside the fridge that has to be cleaned up every few weeks.
But that's not the worst. The worst is that this refrigerator (and especially the freezer) WILL NOT HOLD A TEMPERATURE! If you buy this fridge, you're setting yourself up for food poisoning. Our freezer defrosts completely at least once a week without warning and for no reason. All of the ice in the ice machines melts completely. (We do not store things like meat in this freezer for this reason -we use another, older freezer we're lucky to have downstairs.) Then everything will refreeze, again, but at a degraded quality.
And now the rubber gasket on the fridge has come completelly loose.
We're out of warranty (the problems for everyone always seem to start as soon as the warranty runs out), and I've read that a fix will cost at least $900 -half the price of the original unit. Unfortunately we just married off our daughter and finished a remodel in the other part of the house, so we can't afford a new fridge. When we get one, though, there is NO WAY IN HELL that it will be a GE. I will be boycotting GE on everything for the rest of my life.Made in mexico from cheap parts from third world countries. Failures include water valve (ruined wood floor), ice maker, and mother board. No more GE for me.Our GE Profile looks great side by side with a nice water/ice dispenser. We also bought a Master Protection Plan for 5 years with it. However, our joy was short-lived. 18 months ago, there were a lot of issues with over-freezing inside the freezer compartment. That was resolved after 3 visits from the repair guys. Recently, the fridge started making a lot of noise. After returning from work one day, I found everything in the fridge at room temperature. Now, I am juggling my schedule between many windows of time given by the repair folks. It's been 14 days since, different repairmen come in every time. One orders a part, the next one doesn't know why that part was ordered. No prompt appointments are available --the next one is in two weeks from now. It has been such a frustrating experience.
Looks like there are quite a few "known issues" with the GE Profile. The circuit-boards are faulty and they have received lots of customer complaints regarding similar issues. I don't know if mine will be fixed, but I'd never recommend a GE Profile...

Bought this Vinotemp wine fridge because of low price. Promply died 4 months after warranty expired. Read other reviews please. Also Thermo-Electric cooling is not like real fridge. If your house is 75-80 degrees in summer this thing will almost blow up trying to get to 65-70 even though it is set on 55. Do not buy this fridge or any one like it.My father, brother, and I all purchased this item at the same time and each and every one of ours broke down within a month of each other (around the 1 year mark). Each unit stopped cooling and/or the control board stopped and the digital temperature would not display. When it did work, the temperature fluctuated so much and was so inconsistent. I would not recommend purchasing this product unless you plan on putting it by the curbside about a year after wasting your money on it. It's quite evident that this is a poor manufacturer after seeing other reviews with the same issues.Works (and has worked) perfectly on our kitchen counter we receive many compliments on the unit and have purchased it for others as wedding gifts. I definitely recommend this unit it's a great way to simplify wine storage in the kitchen w/out complication.I was given mine as a gift. The fan was a bit loud and ran constantly so I unplugged it until I would need the wine chilled. When I did finally plug it in, we later found the glass cracked leaving a mosiac pattern throughout the entire window. Within a few months, the unit stopped working altogether. For the high price being charged, it's just not worth it. I would say it's worth maybe $60 at most given the short life span.General Electric GENERAL ELECTRIC WR17X4312 ICE BUCKET AND AUGER ASSEMBLY

the old unit was corroding at many points on the auger where the chrome plate had been knocked off by mineral fragments in the cold water. I had two options; buy a new auger and guess my way to dismantle the unit and rebuild it (for which there is no DIY procedure), or buy the entire bucket and auger. I opted or the more expensive assembly because installing it only involved removal and replacement of four screws. It only took a few minutes. The next step will be an in-line filter to prevent a recurrrence. That's unlikely because the refrigerator is now about 26 years old.Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Cuisinart DCC-1100 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker
I don't agree with the negative comments about this product.
The clock is easy to program and it's clearly indicated that you should either use paper or gold filter (twice in the instructions). It's also easy to pour water in the reservoir if you use the carafe. You can turn the coffee maker to the left, and the reservoir opening is easily accessible. Its opening is by no means tiny, as a reviewer described it.
The center funnel which holds the filter is well situated and there is very little risk of dropping coffee grounds into the water reservoir.
The carafe is well designed, with a comfortable handle. It pours neatly, without dripping coffee all over the counter, something which always happened with my old Mr. Coffee.
You do have to realize the lid snaps down on top of the carafe. This is not explained in the instructions.
Most importantly, it makes an excellent coffee.
There is a 3 year guaranty which is more than I have seen for others.
So far, I have no complaint, and I am glad I bought this product for a great price.
UPDATE: I am still using this coffee maker as of today, August 13, 2012. It's still working well though there are signs of wear. The carafe lid is looser and the cover hinge has a tendancy to stick. Otherwise, there are no problems. My name is Ryan, and I'm a coffee addict... My habit ranges from 1 to 3 pots a day just to remain conscious. So you can understand the level of misery I have had to endure this past week as my 4 year old Gevalia machine met an untimely death during a recent lightning storm. I then began the hunt for a new machine. Basically, Amazon was my first stop since they have everything. I read all sorts of reviews, and finally settled on this one. I must say, this is by far the best machine I've ever owned.
In reading the reviews, I found a few gripes that I don't agree with, so here's my response to those:
1. The number one gripe I see is filling difficulty. The fill hole is much larger than my old machine. Some people said its too small and makes a huge mess. My first time, it did drip a little bit but if you leave the lid off the pot while pouring, works like a charm. Let me put it this way... I wake up in the morning with the jitters, like a fiend looking for some crack... If I can pour it without making a mess ANYONE can. And that's a fact.
2. Numero Dos: Programming difficulty. I'm no rocket scientist by any means, but I had this thing programmed within about 5 minutes. I had no problem understanding the directions. I believe most gripes in this area are operator error.
3. Basket issues: It doesn't stand up on it's own, true, but I don't understand how anyone could miss the basket. Leave it in the machine for pete sake! I hope they don't miss their mouth with that hot coffee! Again, If I can do it without making a mess, anyone can. As for choosing paper or mesh filter, paper of course filters better, but mesh makes it stronger and leaves a bit of sediment in the pot... each way has it's benefits depending on how you like yours.
4. Flip-top so large you have to pull it out from under the counter: True, but how lazy can you be... honestly? It's not that hard of a chore. You'd be hard pressed to find a machine that isn't like this.
I, like others, had some pre-conceived notions from negative reviews, but I found most if not ALL of those to be some pretty weak arguments. I guess some people have more problems than others when trying to understand directions and such. This machine is top notch for the price, hands down!
OH! And please look through all the comments, It's going on 3 years and I have given multiple updates as time has passed. I'm sure you will enjoy!

Hello fellow coffee drinkers. Like most of you I have looked long and hard for a good basic coffee maker. In the last 5 years I have gone through 4 new products and have been quite dissapointed in this whole experience. I mean how hard can it be to make a good coffee maker. I had the basic braun coffee maker for 10 years and loved it. However, two new braun coffee makers later I realized that quality had gone down the drain with the coffee grinds. Then I purchased a krups. I returned it to the store within two weeks as it stopped working. They gave me a replacement which lasted just past the warranty. (figures) Then I tried a GE combo grinder brewer. That was the worst mistake I could have ever made. The first sign that it was garbage should have been when the GE emblem fell off. It leaked. It spilled. I spent more time cleaning than brewing, and thankfully it didn't last as long as its warranty and I had no intentions of getting another one free or not.I have had this cuisinart now for three weeks. It does everything it says it will do. It never leaks, spills or makes a mess. As per the other reviews I feel it could have a bigger fill area but it really is no more difficult to fill than any other brewer I have owned. (don't let that stand in the way of buying this) I also think it is very easy to program and will even keep your settings in memory if it is unpluged for a short period of time.
This coffee maker works perfect and I hope it lasts as long as the warranty and beyond.
Happy brewing.
Read Best Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-1100 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker Here
To make drip coffee, a machine has to do just two things well -heat the water adequately, and disperse the hot water over the grounds. Oddly, most coffee makers fail at one or the other. This Cuisinart does both pretty well, which is why it is probably the best machine on the market right now under $200 (and the reviews at Amazon testify to that).TEMPERATURE: The overwhelming majority of brands do not heat the water adequately -if the water at the grounds is only getting to 175-180 degrees, you will have sour, weak coffee. Ideal temperature is around 202-205. Using a digital thermometer, I measured the DCC-1100 at 197 in the filter basket, which is quite good.
DISPERSION: The second task is showering the hot water over the grounds somewhat evenly. Many coffee makers just stream it in from a mini-faucet, so they overbrew the grounds in the center of the filter and neglect the grounds around the edges. Result is weak, slightly bitter coffee. The very expensive Capresso machine has this problem -it heats water to nearly 200 degrees but delivers that water poorly. The Capresso, which costs close to $200, makes mediocre coffee (at least it did for us). The Cuisinart isn't perfect in this regard but it does have a "shower head" design that disperses the water pretty well.
One other tip, which applies to all drip machines: Don't start with cold water. Room temperature is good. You can do this by running the tap partly warm, or by pouring the water the night before and letting it get to room temp. It gives the heating element a much better chance of getting the water to a good brewing temp.

This coffee maker makes great coffee, is fairly easy to use, and is true red. However...when ordering they do not tell you that it uses a small charcoal type filter that needs to be replaced every month or two (depending on use) and that these filters are far from cheap!
