Kitchenaid KSCS25FVWH 24.5 cu. ft. Counter-Depth Side-by-Side Refrigerator

We have now received FOUR units in a row of this model in stainless steel over the past 15 months or so and the problems, all being manufacturing defects, have ranged from a warped cabinet/door, a unit that leaked an extensive amount of water on our kitchen's new hardwood floors that came from inside the refrigerator (not the water line or dispenser) and was a mystery that was never solved but caused severe floor damage, one had a broken compressor that made squealing/whistling noises on delivery but took months of service calls to diagnose and replace (was told it would've been about $800 if not under warranty...and this last one sounds like it's going out as well and will not maintain normal temperatures...just a few weeks into it), temperature and display controls that are broken upon delivery, one had rust on the stainless freezer door upon unpacking it, numerous cosmetic defects on delivery esp with dispenser plastic, ice and water buildup in the freezer that had numerous repair calls but could never be resolved even after replacing the freezer door, and an annoying habit with one of the units going into defrost mode up to five times a day. When the units were working properly, it has the loudest compressor of any refrigerator I've ever heard. This has been the worst product I've ever purchased and KitchenAid (Whirlpool) has been an absolute pain to deal with, using stall tactics that would try anyone's patience. Please be aware this is very likely essentially the same refrigerator as the similar Jenn-Air, Whirlpool and Maytag counter-depth refrigerators, since Whirlpool makes them all.

I ordered a part for a replacement door rack. The part did not match the part number specified on the refrigerator manual which I don't fault the distributor for. However, after returning a $26 part in new condition with original packaging I received a ~ $10 credit. Excessive I would say.

Everything about this unit is good, except for the fact that it has CONTINUOUSLY LEAKED, even after multiple repairs and new parts. ''

The leaking has severely damaged my wood floors and we may require mold remediation due to the fact that this is an ongoing problem. I've literally spent hours and hours dealing with the fridge and the damage it has caused, and the hours are still adding up. (Yes, this is a big deal. How would you like it if you plunked down $200 only to find your ice cream mix comes out soup or filled with chunky ice cubes?) This machine definitely gets the job done; It makes ice cream.

It is surprisingly quiet.

While you wouldn't want to use it in a library, this machine is actually pretty quiet. Most of us who don't have any experience with an Ice Cream Machine can only relate to the beasts they have at the local Ice-Creameries (You know the ones: Buy One, Get One Free on certain days...) These industrial behemoths are LOUD. This machine (not being an industrial behemoth) is not loud. It **IS** louder than my refrigerator (barely,) but not quite as loud as my washing machine. It's NO WHERE NEAR AS LOUD as a Blender, Food Processor, or Stick Blender (if those are your only gauges of relevance.)

You can make your own concoctions.

Some local ice-creameries will make you a custom blend of ice cream. For example, if you want chocolate chips in some strawberry ice cream, they'll do that. (Probably not nationwide chains, but the local shop might.) But ask them to make anything crazier than that, and you're probably out of luck. Rosewater ice cream? Sorry. Green Tea ice cream? You're probably out of luck.

With this machine, you can make whatever flavors your heart desires, and that's pretty cool. (Just don't save me any Alligator Sherbet, ok?)

Ease of Use / Capacity.

This thing is EASY to use. For example, to make a simple vanilla ice cream, take 2 cups of half-and-half and POUR IT DIRECTLY INTO THE MACHINE'S MIXING BUCKET. DO LIKEWISE WITH 1/2 CUP OF SUGAR. Add a tablespoon of vanilla, and run the machine. About 45 minutes later, you'll have medium soft serve ice cream. NOTE that I do not say "Bring this mixture to a boil," nor do I say "Mix it," nor anything like that. In fact, when I tried this mix, I could even hear the churn running over the grains of sugar in the churning bowl. But, 45 minutes later, nothing but super-fine ice cream.

The other plus side is this machine's capacity. It's nice to be able to make a larger quantity of a mix if the mix is a bit more complicated (ie: a custard, which may require the incorporation of eggs, and possible cooking of the eggs.) This way, you can make a larger batch of mix, followed by a larger batch of ice cream.

It's NOT dishwasher safe!

While I won't say "Cleanup is hard," (there are really only 2 things to clean: the bowl and the beater,) you still can't just toss them into the top rack of your dishwasher to get the job done. You'll also need to wipe off the top plastic cover with a sponge, dishrag, etc... because it's permanently attached to the motor (which doesn't lend itself to easy cleaning.) The same thing holds true if your mix overflows the bowl and gets into the machine itself. (Don't worry, it's easy to clean, but again, you can't put the whole machine into your dishwasher [it's electrical, y'know,] so you'll have to clean it with a sponge or dishrag...) In other words, it would have been nicer if the freezing bowl (into which the mixing bowl sits,) the mixing bowl, the churn, and the plastic cover all been removable and dishwasher safe. They're not, but, to Whynter's credit, they are pretty easy to clean.

The label came off

Petty? Yes. But it's an indicator as to the design of the machine. The label is a stiff label affixed to the rounded "tub" area of the machine. Had the machine been designed with a flat areat onto which the logo could be affixed, the label would still be there. (Mind you, this is "straight out of the box."

Little or No Documentation

The documentation isn't bad (for what there is of it, but there aren't any recipes that come along with it. Also, there's no indicator as to the Maximum Fill Level of the Churn bucket. Overfill it, and you've got an ice cream that won't set properly, or have enough air mixed into it; or worse: ice cream base spilling into the freezing chamber. NOTE: You **CAN** go onto the website and download some recipes, but it would have been GREAT if they would have spent the extra $.38 and printed out some copies of at least a simple vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry mix recipe and thrown it into the box.

"Add-Ins" chute too small

Do you like "Add-Ins" (ie: gelatin-based fruit-flavored candy animals and the like) in your ice cream? Well, you'll need to stop the machine, open the top, add the Add-Ins, then restart the churn (which, ideally, you'd wait 6 minutes for, since the compressor doesn't like to start and stop without a 6 minute breather.) The current model has a chute large enough for sprinkles and MAYBE very small cookie crumbs, but not chocolate chips. Again, not the worst thing in the world, but... hey! You know.

It can be slow

Works very well. Creates very finely shaved ice when using the molds (as others have noted, the finest shavings come if you let the molds sit at room temperature for a while, as instructions recommend). Ability to use ice cubes is nice alternative, especially if someone prefers crunchier ice bits. Can be a little noisy, unlike the manual shaver I used to use, but shaves ice quickly, so the noise doesn't last long.

For syrup, I use highly concentrated Kool Aid: I add 6 or 7 ounces of water to a packet of unsweetened Kool Aid and a cup of sugar. Creates the consistency and sweetness of regular snow cone syrup (you need to mix it quite a bit--a jar with a tight lid is useful, so you can shake it vigorously).

If you are looking for a great ice shaving machine this is by far the best. I bought it to make Asian style shaved ice, and this machine delivers. I get consistent results everytime, ice comes out so fine just like snow. My kids ask for shaved ice for dessert every night! The other nice thing is that you can get acessories and parts for the machine from the manufacturer's website direct and they have excellent customer service. I am so happy with this purchase.

If you're looking for soft, fluffy, snow-like shaved ice, then keep searching. This is good enough to satisfy your craving for shaved ice, but the ice tends to come out a bit crunchy. Its hard to really fault the machine since it is only $30 shipped. We've definitely gotten our money's worth already after owning it for two months, but if I had the money and the space in my kitchen, I'd opt for the semi-commercial sized shaved ice machine for $199 here on Amazon because that one has an adjustable blade where you can adjust the fluffiness of the ice. That would be like the Vita-mix of shaved ice machines. This one from Hawaiian Shaved Ice is like your run of the mill Oster blender of shaved ice machines which does the job, but you get what you pay for.

Tip: remember to wipe down the inside of the machine after using it. Leaving ice/water in the machine may allow the blade to rust over time.

worked great! packaged nicely, up and running in no time. shaved ice is powder and w/small microchips, but plenty small and about as close to what I remember having as a kid while travelling abroad. easy enough to use, our 8 year old cranked out a few cupfulls with ease. turns out the ice cup resevoir size is the same diameter as the small 2 cup food containers sold by Ziploc! just fill up most of the way and invert while warming the sides up and the ice pops out. Now we can prefreeze a lot more then the two included in the box...must hunt down some more flavored juices.

I love this seller!! This was the greatest thing I have ever ordered, and it arrived ahead of schedule, in perfect condition. This sno cone machine was exactly as advertised, if not better. So, as you can see, there are many many benefits to this sno cone machine, and you can get creative and make your own syrups if you want. Just use 1 pkg of any flavor Kool-Aid and two cups of sugar. Mix together and bring to a boil, simmer two minutes, cool and voila, you have a great tasting flavor of your choice sno cone (and I use Splenda instead of sugar). You can also use Pedialite or Gatorade; you can take a small amount of the ice and put their medicine in it along with a little syrup. Be creative. There are so many ways to make or buy flavors.

The downside is that it does not do the chilling by itself: water and ice must be supplied. I was skeptical at first that it would work, but I got one after I saw it featured in Kiplingers magazine. It worked as advertised. Chills my beer/soda cans quick in one minute and my bottles in three and a half minutes and like they say, it dosen't fizz over which I was really skeptical about. Glass bottles can sometimes rattle a bit but this dosen't seem to be a problem since its still not fizzy. Also great for chilling my wine quickly to the proper serving temp. I never really noticed the taste difference until I used my Cooper Cooler to chill my white wines to the recommended temperature in the mid-low 50s (only took three and a half minutes!!!) vs refrigerator temp which they say is too cold for most white wines. I was surprised that the difference in serving temp had an impact on the wine's taste, flavor, etc... It can sometimes groove the wine labels, but I don't care, but FYI if you collert the labels they have a no spin mode which dosen't sping the bottle. Real easy to use b/c of the electronic touch pad with easy to understand beverage chill settings and clean up is a snap, just empty the ice water bath in the sink. I store my wine outside the fridge now to make more room for other stuff since I can quickly chill my wine whenever I need it like when guests come over or whatever. Really recommend for the wine drinker b/c it can chill your wine quickly to the proper serving temp and great for the person who throws allot of parties since it can chill just about anything! Great conversation piece at parties.

I bought this refrigerator last year based on all the information I found at multiple websites. I must admit that based on reviews on the Amazon website I was very leery. I have found that the reviews on Amazon are usually correct, But not this time. I was willing to take a chance and buy a GE refrigerator due to they have been in business for so long, and been making good products or would have been out of business a long time ago.

This is the first refrigerator with an ice maker, and water dispenser I have ever owned, and so far it being almost one year old has been a great machine. Even with an ice maker I have seen a reduction in my electric bill by almost 20$/month, some of which could be due to my new TV also. Nonetheless water/ice and a reduction in elctricy usage was a nice surprise. Lots of room in this fridge, could easily accommodate a very large turkey, and for a family of 5 we have plenty of room for what we need to store. The only Con, (which is not really a big deal for me) is that with the glass shelves they show all the dirt off, so if you want your fridge to look spotless you will find yourself cleaning off the shelves frequently. Spill proof is what they call the shelves, and that is kind of misleading, the ledge around the shelf will catch small amounts of liquid, and therefore makes it easier to keep clean, but you could easily spill enough to go over the edge of these shelves. Overall I am very pleased with this refrigerator, and would buy again.

12/27/11 I was thinking that there was one important thing that I left out. based on some expert advice i bought and used a surge supressor with this refrigerator from day one since it is run by a computer. Other websites had recomended this to protect the circuits use to regulate the refrigerator.

6/25/12 Still extreamly pleased with this refrigerator, just put in second new water filter about 2 months ago. The vegatable drawer is nothing short of amazing it keeps the stuff fresh far longer than I would expect, more than double the time of my old fridge.

In my opinion my GE Profile side by side has been the worst refrigerator that I have ever owned. Most all of the drawers have cracked, along with the rails that hold them. The ice machine never works properly. I have had the entire water valve fail and flood my floor and ruin everything inside the refrigerator---need I go on because this isn't the end of my problems with the unit. I will definitely never purchase another GE product. I have also written to GE about this product but did not hear back from them. I feel like I got stuck with a big lemon.

We bought all GE appliances when we remodeled a few years ago. The diswasher, stove and microwave were all fine, But I would never, ever in a million years buy a GE refrigerator again.

There are a few good reviews here, and to them I would like to say "Congratulations! Either you got one of the rare non-lemon machines, or your refrigerator has not yet fallen apart." But the bad reviews are all the same as what I've experienced, and you will find many, many, many more of them when you visit other review sites.

From the start, there has been a leak inside the refrigerator, where it connects to the ice machine. Huge chunks of ice build up there and have to be regularly pried off with a screw driver. The extra liquid pooling where it's not supposed to be also creates a black mold buildup ijnside the fridge that has to be cleaned up every few weeks.

But that's not the worst. The worst is that this refrigerator (and especially the freezer) WILL NOT HOLD A TEMPERATURE! If you buy this fridge, you're setting yourself up for food poisoning. Our freezer defrosts completely at least once a week without warning and for no reason. All of the ice in the ice machines melts completely. (We do not store things like meat in this freezer for this reason -we use another, older freezer we're lucky to have downstairs.) Then everything will refreeze, again, but at a degraded quality.

And now the rubber gasket on the fridge has come completelly loose.

We're out of warranty (the problems for everyone always seem to start as soon as the warranty runs out), and I've read that a fix will cost at least $900 -half the price of the original unit. Unfortunately we just married off our daughter and finished a remodel in the other part of the house, so we can't afford a new fridge. When we get one, though, there is NO WAY IN HELL that it will be a GE. I will be boycotting GE on everything for the rest of my life.

Our GE Profile looks great side by side with a nice water/ice dispenser. We also bought a Master Protection Plan for 5 years with it. However, our joy was short-lived. 18 months ago, there were a lot of issues with over-freezing inside the freezer compartment. That was resolved after 3 visits from the repair guys. Recently, the fridge started making a lot of noise. After returning from work one day, I found everything in the fridge at room temperature. Now, I am juggling my schedule between many windows of time given by the repair folks. It's been 14 days since, different repairmen come in every time. One orders a part, the next one doesn't know why that part was ordered. No prompt appointments are available --the next one is in two weeks from now. It has been such a frustrating experience.

Looks like there are quite a few "known issues" with the GE Profile. The circuit-boards are faulty and they have received lots of customer complaints regarding similar issues. I don't know if mine will be fixed, but I'd never recommend a GE Profile...

Idylis HEPA Replacement Filter IAF-H-100C by FUSA

The original filter that came with the unit was encased in heavy plastic and fit like a glove. This replacement filter was all cardboard and very flimsy. You pay for plastic and you get cardboard.

This is a good basic replacement for the idyls filter at lowes. It fits the air cleaner unit just fine.

I bought these as substute for the originals put them in my purifier, problem is the change filter lights stayed on and wouldn't go off. Next time ill just buy the ones from manufacturer, its worth the money unless I just got some defective filters.

We made sure it sits level on the floor, we turned it on and let it cool for 24 hours before we stocked it. So far so good. It is relatively quiet, and it does hold all different size bottles. The flap that normally covers the ice dispenser chute on my Whirlpool refrigerator stopped working. It would not seal properly, which caused moisture to freeze up the mechanism that crushes and dispenses ice--which meant no ice could be dispensed at all. It was "reach into the bucket and get some ice" for a while until I found this kit. While any repair kit that uses some type of super-adhesive to mount additional hardware (not visible after installation, by the way, which is good) and requires you to take needle-nose pliers and break off the little plastic things that originally supported the flap can cause some apprehension in someone with little confidence in their repair skills (me), it worked perfectly. Some aspects of the replacement directions did have me scratching my head for a few minutes, but the end result was a complete success.

This repair kit for the refrigerator ice door worked for my Kitchenaid Refrigerator KSRP22F. I did this repair a few months ago and it is working OK. There is some frost and ice buildup inside now around the ice container which I clear away easily every few weeks. So the ice door seal must not be perfect when closed, but it's satisfactory and I am glad have the system working.

I think this repair is harder than others have suggested because it is not easy to see and get at. You must first do some disassembly just to verify that you have a broken hinge. During the actual repair, I ended up with a small flashlight in my mouth to see up in there.

The good news is that many others have done this repair before you. On the Internet, you will learn how to take the front panel off and you will print up a good photo of the ice door assembly properly installed. You want to see how the mechanism looked before your hinge broke and before all the pieces came loose. This picture will be useful because the kit's instructions have tiny black & white pictures that don't show clear details. But the written instructions have no errors.

I ended up adding my own 1/4 inch plastic bushing at the right end of the ice door assembly metal shaft. I did this as a spacer because, in my case, the new ice door assembly would otherwise move slightly to the right along its shaft after each use until it would get out of working position. The ice door assembly needs to stay to the left up against the ice dispenser lever (the one you push in for ice). Your pressing the ice lever in is what opens the ice door and the lever's alignment to the ice door parts must stay in place for proper ice door opening.

The product works perfectly. However, the previous reviews are 100% correct that the instructions are poor at best. It could definitely use larger color pictures and better descriptions. For example, there is a third tab near the two you have to break off. I inadvertently broke the wrong one. It turns out this tab is used to hold the pin for the hinge to the flapper door in place. After it was reassembled, the flapper door kept falling out of place, much as it had done prior to the repair. I managed to rig it with the use of a screw through the back to mimic the tab I inadvertently removed and that seems to have worked. Again, good product, lousy documentation.

This was a perfect fix for that cheap plastic hook that broke so easily on my ice dispenser. It was easy to install, although the panel and several parts had to be removed to do it. My only complaint is that it uses an adhesive pad to mount itself, although I can't see how else it would work. It was a bit strange that it had adhesive pads that the instructions specifically said not to use. So then why are they there?

Before installing, you must break off the existing tabs that the ice door pivots on, so get a pair of needle-nose pliers ready. It also seems to be rather expensive for a piece of metal and a plastic door, considering I just purchased something far more complicated to fix the ice maker at a fraction of the cost, but it's still less than the repairman wanted for the part.

This kit uses metal to replace a segment of a much larger molded plastic part. The plastic in the original design was not of sufficient strength to support the spring loaded stress to completely close the ice dispenser door located in the side by side freezer door of the refrigerator. The kit solves the problem adequately, but some mechanical aptitude is needed to properly align the kit bracket so the ice dispenser door closes properly. My only complaint is that the manufacturer profits from it's own design flaw with a ridiculous price of $50.00 plus for the repair kit. The fix works, the Amazon service was great. Since I bought the kit, I did receive a notice from Amazon offering a significantly lower price for the kit, (which was too late to benefit me).
