Must say, researching a refrigerator is a perilous endeavor, fraught with all kinds of misinformation and marketing hype, not to mention biased reviews on all the manufacturer websites that they've hand picked and pruned, so you never really know who to trust.

After much hemming and hawing and talking to some friends of friends in the business, we were told that Samsung was one of the better brands from a reliability standpoint. In addition, they happened to have some the most spacious designs and I had seen fewer horrifically bad reviews than other brands, so I decided to give them a chance.

By pure fate, my wife and I stumbled on this particular model in a store right before we pulled the trigger on an order for a slightly different model. This one, as you'll note in the photos, has no ice maker or water dispenser in the door. Furthermore, inside, it has no ice maker on the upper left shelf, taking up a ton of room and limiting your interior space. You also get back all the storage space on the left side door, whereas the other models you sacrifice this in order to have a dispenser. Since we rarely if ever used the ice/water dispenser in our old fridge door, we decided to forgo it this time around and get the extra space instead. In hindsight, this was the best decision we could have made! Not only is this model MUCH cheaper than the one with the ice maker and water dispenser, but it is also more efficient AND it has a ton more interior space, despite being slightly smaller (28.5 cu vs. 31.6). We still get the awesome 'cool select' pantry inside the fridge section, and essentially the same (but more spacious) layout as the 31.6 cu model for about 40% less money. It also looks cleaner/neater in our kitchen, with smooth, pearl white doors on both sides, you get the clean symmetry and there's less moving parts to wear out or break/replace/warranty/etc.

And yes, you still get ice, there's an ice maker in the freezer section, tucked away in the back that fills a bucket (optional, you can turn it off to get the extra freezer space) with ice. If you turn off the ice maker and remove the bucket, you have the exact same amount of storage space in the freezer as the other models, which is another huge plus.

As far as noise level, since I saw this a lot in other reviews, I have to say that this unit is supremely quiet. You can't hear it from the other side of the wall in an adjacent room, unless it is dropping ice into the bucket (not really any way to make that quiet on any brand of fridge). The compressor and fan are both very quiet, enough so that in an open kitchen-to-living room design, I don't have any issues watching TV while it's running. Heck, even when I'm eating dinner right in front of the fridge, the noise is a non-issue. Our old one was quiet, but this one is even better, so I really cannot complain at all about the noise level, it is fabulously quiet, at least for refrigerator standards.

I like the dual cooling circuits, so that you don't mix air between the freezer and the fridge sections, that is something I always wanted. I'm of the opinion that this has to be more efficient too, versus blowing freezer air into the fridge section. Additionally, the controls on this fridge are stupid easy, with one button to set the temp in the fridge, one for the freezer. No dials, no gimmicky stuff or moving parts to break. Clean, simple, crisp digital readout on the upper lip of the fridge's door frame, similar to a lot of designs I'd seen in Europe the last few years, and no wasted space inside for a control panel or any of that nonsense.

The lighting is spectacular, with ample LEDs that emit far, far less heat than the old incandescent bulbs and use much less electricity in the process. The light is bright, clean and easy on the eyes, especially if you open it up in the middle of the night for a drink or a snack once your eyes have already adjusted to the darkness. That used to annoy me insanely with our old fridge, I would go practically blind if I got up in the middle of the night to get a drink!

On the whole, this is simply a wonderful refrigerator and I would definitely buy it again. The price point compared to the larger models (which actually have LESS storage because of the ice/water dispenser setup on one side and one door) is dramatically lower, but all the same high dollar features and the extremely open layout are still there. You really get the maximum bang for your buck with this model. If you have a chance, compare it side-by-side at a brick-and-mortar store with the larger 31 cu model that has the ice maker in the fridge, and you'll see how much space you lose because of the assembly in the left side door. After doing that comparison and thinking about how much stuff we put in our fridge, this was a no-brainer decision for our family. The fact that it cost so much less, that was icing on the cake.

Maximum value for the dollar and a good quality brand, packed with a ton of amazing features, this is a definite buy. I would not hesitate to buy this again or to recommend it to friends and family.

What we like about it. Very stylish, modern looking, stainless steel is beautiful. Huge refrigerator, and no ice dispenser taking needed refrigerator room. Easy access to everything with french doors. Very sturdy build. Very well protected with wrapping on delivery so not a single scratch on it. Would have been very pleased, if it was just furniture. Stainless steel shows fingerprints everywhere, just a warning, but we knew that beforehand, and just remember to always use the handle or clean it frequently.

What we did not like about it: The refrigerator freezes everything, despite being on factory setting of 38F. We tried everything, turned the refrigerator setting on warmest 46F, freezer on warmest setting to 8F, crisper on warmest setting. Tried unplugging for ten minutes (resets it), then 30 mins, then an hour. But even with refrigerator on 46f, 2 days later, everything still freezing. Destroys fruit or vegetables in one night, frozen solid. When we went to ask that it be returned/replaced as it is brand new, we were told we were not the first with same complaint about refrigerator freezing things. So we went with another brand in similar size stainless steel.

We were amazed by the room in the frige. More fits in the door than I expected. After reading other reviews about freezing food I bought a frige thermometer that reads 38 with the frige set to 40. I do not have any problems with food freezing. One of the frige shelves folds in half if you would want to put something tall (maybe a vase of flowers) in the frige a nice option. Along with all the room another nice feature is the lighting it is bright and easy to find things even in the back of the frige. The freezer is also large we added a 20lb turkey at thanksgiving but still have room for our normal freezer food. If you need the room it's a good value and an attractive choice.

Letter to Consumer Reports:

I bought this SAMSUNG RF266ABRS fridge because it was recommended by Consumer Reports in August 2009. This fridge and other SAMSUNG fridges should be taken off the recommended list because there is an inherent design defect that causes ice buildup on the evaporator coils.

First there is a rattling noise as the fan hits the ice buildup.

Then the noise stops when the ice completely blocks the fan but then there is no more cooling happening.

There is even a class action lawsuit against SAMSUNG fridges:

Please look into this Samsung ice buildup problem. The Samsung fridges should definitively not be on the recommended list but put on the "do not buy" list. The ice buildup issue occurs about 1 year after purchase. SAMSUNG is not acknowledging the problem and does not help its customers.

Letter to SAMSUNG:

I am deeply unsatisfied on how SAMSUNG handled the warranty policy with my SAMSUNG Fridge French Door Model RF266ABRS. This fridge was defective starting Year 1 and was not repaired appropriately the 1st time. All was done on the 1st service visit was to defrost the evaporator not fixing the problem itself.

Of course, the problem reoccurred 1 year later and every year after that. Since the technician explained the problem, how to solve it and SAMSUNG customer service gave me a hard time because it was a few days over the 1 year purchase date, I dealt with it personally by unplugging the unit and let it sit unplug for 24 hours. Not a satisfactory resolution, just a quick workaround, until I got fed up with losing food and asked for SAMSUNG to resolve this problem once and for all.

First this problem should have been resolved the 1st visit. Secondly I learned recently from numerous complaints and videos on the web that this is a defective design in SAMSUNG fridges that causes the ice buildup on the evaporator.

Here is a video showing the defrost sensor modification kit to fix evaporator ice buildup. This is for the SAMSUNG RSH1 fridge but it is the same modification that was done on my fridge by the repair technician who came to my house:

Many SAMSUNG fridges have the same cooling design thus sharing the same ice buildup issue.

I was charged $104.68 to fix SAMSUNG own defective design! This is outrageous and no decent company would shift the cost from itself to their customers . It shows utter disrespect for its own customers, not counting the monetary damage. Sir, should I remind you that your customers are your most important assets and should be your priority number one!

SAMSUNG should have done everything in its power to help its loyal customers by fixing its defective fridges FREE OF CHARGE.

The technician explained that he had to move the defrost sensor away from the evaporator in order to let the defrost cycle run longer and completely defrost the evaporator from any ice buildup. He also put a wider drain clip. The older clip was too small. It would get iced up and not let water drain away from the evaporator. There is also a new metal clip that attaches to the heating element and goes inside the drain clip to heat any ice there if needed so the drain cannot get clogged. In addition, a new seal kit put on the market by SAMSUNG 3 months ago was used to seal the evaporator compartment to prevent moisture to get in and improve circulation airflow provided by the fan.

Pek Vino Vault Wine Preserving Refrigerator, Silver

Pek Vino Vault Wine Preserving Refrigerator, SilverBought the Vino Vault from Amazon a little over one year ago. Stopped working last week. I have been trying to find an owners manual. Called the company that makes the product. They said no manual. Also said that they can not repair their product. The company also said only 90 day warranty. I guess I have to look for a better product and a better company.

I have to concur with the other reviews of this product. Mine just died after only a year and 1/2 of use. I called to see about repair options and the company told me there's nothing they can do. Sorry, that's just unacceptable in this day and age.

Lasted barely one year. Company does not support it's product and provides no tech manuals or references of any kind. Company and product suck.

Had this hunk of junk for 5 months. After that, the light started blinking and making this annoying sound. Apparently that means the compressor is kaput. Other reviewers say PEK will not service this. What a waste of money. PEK is garbage.

I noticed some corrosion and heavy scale on the original pump in my Kitchen Aid ice machine during a service overhaul, and brought this item as a straight replacement. The machine now produces ice at a faster rate and is much quieter now.

The pump was shipped and delivered on time.

It was the part I needed and still working well, and at a significant discount to others I found on online for the exact same product. If you have a non-working stand alone (not refrigerator based) Kitchenaid icemaker appliance that doesn't seem to pump water upward from the water trough to make ice, its a good chance this is the part you need. It turns out that this Whirlpool part is standard in many other brand icemakers. There is a plastic shield near the back of the ice bin you can quickly remove to see the part and verify if your pump looks the same.

Part is very easy to replace yourself, and will save you a small fortune compared to what you'd pay a plumber.

WF293 Aqua Fresh Refrigerator Water Filter

WF293 Aqua Fresh Refrigerator Water FilterI have had a Kenmore refrigerator for the past 6 years and it was getting old paying around $50.00 plus for a {one} new water filter!!! The Direct Parts Store on-line should be charged with one armed robbery! Seneca River Trading is a God sent.... I can buy two Aqua Fresh filters which are built with the same materials as the factory brand for the same price. The Aqua Fresh filter installed within seconds, without a hitch. I bought two of these filters for about the same price as the Whirlpool filters. When it comes to appliance parts don't panic, because a part is made from another country. All of the major appliance companies purchase large amounts of their parts from Asia.... My last GM vehicle I bought the engine was from China, the transmission was from Japan and the body was from Canada.... Lightening shipping, great communicators, ordered early Tuesday morning from New York to Oklahoma in three days. They kept me informed and up to date until it was delivered. I am all about buying quality parts at 50% of the cost of the factory name brand. Besides the water tastes good again... I will absolutely buy from Seneca River Trading again.... Thanks Guys

WF293 Aqua Fresh refrigerator water filter works as the original. Easy to install. Filtered water in minutes. Good choice. Recommended

This product fits well enough, it is a pinch smaller than the original but fits. Everyone in my family has said it caused a weird taste. The taste is a lot like old metal pipes. Some of my family says it tastes like chemicals. I would not buy this again for myself. But the price is decent, possibly worth trying once for yourself if if the taste doesn't bother you, you have a good deal. If the taste does bother you, you're out $20.00 like we were.

Whirlpool Ice Door Kit 8201649 NEW 2180205 4388659 purchased 8/29/11 was received sooner than expected. As previous reviewers had mentioned there were no instructions. I found these instructions helpful:

1.Find the two notches that are at the bottom of the dispenser cover on the left and right side. Pry off the cover with the flat-head screwdriver.{Yes, the front panel should just snap off. If you look under the bottom edge there is often a couple small slots. Put a flat blade screwdriver in the slot and pop the front off."

2. Find and remove the two screws that are used to secure the white switchplate with the screwdriver. Pull the switchplate out of the door and set it aside.

3. Remove the front cover assembly to access the ice dispenser housing. Locate the ice dispenser lever and take it out of the housing. This will expose the door mechanism assembly.

4. Press on the torsion spring and take out the door mechanism assembly.

5. Examine the door mechanism assembly to see if the pin that is used to open and close the ice door is broken. Pull out the broken pin and insert a new pin that is included with the ice-door kit.

6. Place the door mechanism assembly back in the door and make sure the torsion spring is set into the ice door correctly.

7. Re-attach the ice dispenser lever and then set the front cover assembly back onto the door. Set the switchplate back in place and secure it with the screws.

8. Place the dispenser cover back on the door to complete the project.

Kit is installed and working well.

As said before, this is an inexpensive fix to the ice chute freezing up. Directions are not included other than replace all parts. I just used my camera phone to take picks of old setup before I removed the parts so I would know how it went back together. Hardest part is getting the front trim cover off of the door to expose screws. Be real careful prying from the bottom slots so as not to break the very expensive trim, then it just slides up with only 1 connector to unplug to remove it completely. Very easy fix once trim removed.

This updated part is a great improvement over the original one as it seals much better & ice will not stick to it.

I did the replacement myself, but first watched the YouTube videos (there are several) & took notes I would strongly advise you do the same.

**If I had it to do again, I would snap a picture before removing each thing just to have a point of reference & sequence when reassembling.

Hardest part was step 1: removing outer frame; the rest is relatively simple.

Unless your ice chute is cracked or broken, save your money & wash the old one while it is out it'll be good as new.

When you get finished, remember to PLUG IN your refrigerator & PAY YOURSELF the hundred bucks you just saved!

The panel to the opening was old and defective, looked used. The rest of the parts looked cheap. I would not use this kit to fix your ice maker door.

LG LFX31925ST 35 3/4 30.7 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator, Stainless Steel

LG LFX31925ST 35 3/4 30.7 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator, Stainless SteelYes, there is a ice maker problem, and LG knows about it and has engineered a fix. The computer that controls the defrost cycle does not defrost long enough, so ice builds up on the inside wall, causing the fan that forces cold air into the ice maker compartment to make noise and, I suppose if it gets bad enough, stop moving altogether. I know this because this is what I was told when I had service performed by a local company who contracts with LG to do warranty service. The service guy replaced the gasket around the freezer door and the computer "motherboard" in the rear. An additional fix to the ice maker is forthcoming when parts come in that is supposed to increase ice production. This is a great frig aside from these problems, but at least LG stepped up and is getting them fixed for me without hesitation.

Huge perfect for a family of 7. I can see everything easily and it have great storage/dividers. Love that it is easy to fill a pitch of water b/c of the water placement.

We are a family of 6 and we needed a new fridge, I waited a few months before reviewing this fridge so at this point I feel comfortable reviewing it now.. The layout is good the space is great and there is always enough room for all of the left overs.. I would recommend this fridge to anyone with a large family!

We have had this frig for 1 year and three months and here are the problems we have had.

Electronic control panel completely stopped working for about a day.

Ice maker jams up all the time.

Three of the five side door pockets are broken. Today I open the frig and the condiments fell out from the side door storage and all the glass condiment bottles broke.

Also if you are not at least 5' 5" you will not be able to reach to the back of the top shelves.

This is the worst frig I have ever owned.

I have not called them yet, however we have read on the web that they know they have a control panel problem and while a good organization would do a recall or at least offer to fix it out of warranty, LG will not.

I really regret this purchase. If LG does anything positive in response to the call I will make soon, I will update my post.

Update 12/14/12

I changed my review from one to three stars because I called LG and received some results. I told the initial rep about my broken bin and dividers and he just wanted to give me the number for parts. I told him I should not have to pay for these as I have had five thing go wrong on this frig in less then 16 months. When I asked to be transferred to a supervisor he did and after explaining my frustration to the supervisor, he agreed to send out a new side storage bin and dividers. They came within four days. One of the parts was wrong but I know they tried and most of my storage bin problems are solved. I do give them credit for doing this and doing it quickly.

Want LG LFX31925ST 35 3/4 30.7 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator, Stainless Steel Discount?

After needing a replacement for our 20 year old, broken down, electricity eating refrigerator, I searched the web for the best professionally reviewed refrigerator, then checked user reviews. LG was at or near the top of every reviewer's list and had no more complaints than the other refrigerators I had considered. After looking at several models we fell in love with the spaciousness of this extra capacity French door refrigerator and have had it for four months. What is so amazing is that there is so much more room, yet fits in the same space of our old refrigerator. The freezer is so large we were able to eliminate our extra freezer in the basement and the refrigerator has so much space it looks almost empty even though it is well stocked. I love the vegetable drawers that keep everything fresh for days and days, and the deli drawer holds an enormous amount of cheese and other goodies.

As others have mentioned, the lighting is fantastic and the ice maker is small but makes enough ice for our use (and has been problem free). It also comes with a tray in the freezer compartment where you can store more ice if you are expecting a crowd. But what I love most is the water filter that makes the water so pure. Although our town's reverse osmosis water is passable, I had forgotten what chemical free water tasted like and we now use this filtered water for coffee, tea, etc. and even our pet's drinking water.

This is my second LG product. I purchased a large capacity, self-leveling steam washing machine last summer (that I also highly recommend) after suffering with a Bosch large capacity washer that constantly walked across the laundry room and could never be leveled, and died after only five years.

I have to say that I am very impressed with LG products.

UPDATE: About five months ago I noticed ice building up on the top drawer of the freezer. I emailed LG to see if I had done something wrong when I changed my water filter. Within two hours I received a phone call from LG's customer service department telling me it was a fan issue and they were sending a serviceman to change the fan in my freezer. He showed up the next day and I haven't had a problem since. I was very impressed with their customer service department and their prompt attention. Great customer service, great refrigerator.

Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool, Sears, Kenmore Pump Drive Coupler 285753 285753A 285753T

Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool, Sears, Kenmore Pump Drive Coupler 285753 285753A 285753T
  • If unsure, please ask your seller if it fits your model

My washer is 12 years old, and the original recently broke. I purchased and installed 2 of these after market couplers within 1 month. The first one broke during the first wash cycle with a very light load. The second lasted about 3 weeks, and snapped during a rinse cycle. This time, after reading the reviews here (didn't purchase the knockoffs here), I went to Sears and paid $20 for an OEM coupler. (needed it asap) Totally different plastics!! Both have the metal insert, but the EOM part is a harder plastic, and also a different color...tinged a greenish color. You can find the OEM online for cheaper than Sears, but total cost depends on shipping. Like others have said, don't waste your time and money on a $5 coupler. It's not worth the aggravation of tearing the washer apart multiple times to replace it. Spend the extra $$ and do the job once!! $20 is still a lot cheaper than what a service call costs. I watched the utube video's and did it myself, was easier than I imagined. I'm a 52 yr old female.

I've had to replace the coupling twice thinking that I had something else wrong with the washer. Turns out it's just the coupling that kept failing. I'm ordering the 285753 without the A to make sure I get an OEM that doesn't use cheap plastic. Wish I would have discovered the issue was with the coupling and not my washer begore ordering it a third time with Saturday delivery.

On the bright side, I've performed a full overhaul on my 15 year old washer. Hope to get another 15 out of it.

I replaced the broken coupler in my 13-year-old Kenmore washing machine with this one. Would give it 5 stars except for a couple of niggles:

the new one has a metal collar while the original was just molded plastic. Not sure which one is better, but presumably the metal collar provides a tighter fit and is more resilient (Some reviewers have complained that the metal clamp breaks free of the plastic, so I may update this review at some point if that happens to me.)

the black rubber isolation coupling appears to be less sturdy than the original. It's slightly smaller in diameter than the old one I removed, so the holes where the couplers go in seem a bit flimsy at the top (close to the outer circumference). Again, not sure how much that matters.

Regardless, it does the job. For under 4 dollars + watching some DIY videos on YouTube + 2 hours of manual labor, I was able to get the old washing machine running as good as new.

Actually worked for a few month, but now the white plastic part broke. It's cheap, but doesn't appear to be very reliable. Not worth the effort.

Samsung Icemaker Assembly DA97-05554A DA9705554A

Samsung Icemaker Assembly DA97-05554A DA9705554A
  • Samsung Original Part
  • SAMSUNG DA97-05554A

This item is solely the small icemaker portion that is attached to the top of your Samsung refrigerator (my model is RF26VABBP). What it does not contain is:

any part of the slide-in ice tray/dispenser;

the level arm on the side of the icemaker that I guess indicates if the tray is full

the long L shaped spoke guard that sits over the ice

the clip in holder that actually connects the icemaker to the top of the fridge

Luckily all those piece were salvageable from my old one, and within several hours of reconnecting I had a full tray of ice.

(In case anyone is interested, the failure of my old icemaker, exactly 1 month after warranty ran out, was the heating element stopped working, which is what slightly warms the ice so it detaches from the maker and can be dumped into the tray)

Product arrived quickly and in good condition. I needed to move a few plastic support parts from the original to the new one, plugged it in and we now have ice again.

We've been plagued with poor ice maker results with our Samsung french-door unit with ice in the door. Ice gets clumped and stuck regularly. We'll see if this changes.

Immediate problem was a burnt out heater in the unit I replaced.

Whynter BWR-18SD 18 Bottle Built-In Wine Refrigerator

Whynter BWR-18SD 18 Bottle Built-In Wine Refrigerator
  • Capacity: 19 standard 750ml wine bottles
  • Tempered double pane gray-smoked glass for enhanced UV protection
  • Digital LED temperature control with temperature range from 40ºF - 65ºF
  • Powerful fan-circulated compressor cooling ensures even temperature distribution
  • Security lock and key

I received the fridge yesterday and it was in good condition, and when I turned it turned on it dropped the temperature inside from 76 to 54 in about 15-20 minutes. It appears to be made of quality construction and since its a fridge and not a cooler Im expecting it to last a long time. The one issue is that when the coolant cycles there is a noise that can be heard outside the kitchen. Im not sure if thats what I can always expect but Im going to see how to correct that.

I picked the Whynter because I found a site that reviewed wine fridges () and the Whynter had good reviews.

I purchased this item about four months ago and I still love it. I was looking for a narrow wine fridge that that I could install into the center island in my kitchen. I did not have much space so this 12" wide model was perfect. I still cant believe it holds as much as it does. I purchased this on my Prime Membership and had it shipped overnight for $4 (I have no idea how Amazon makes any money when they will ship a big item for $4) Anyway, I have noticed that at times the fridge does make some noise but it is nothing that will ever bother you. This fridge does drop the temperature of bottles very quickly. I am very happy with this fridge, I would highly reccomend it.

I purchased a new home that had a trash compactor. It was 12" trash compactor which they do not make anymore.......Just 15" trash compactors are available. This fits perfectly where my 12" trash compactor was and is very modern looking to go with my stainless steel appliances.

We don't drink wine much, but we had an old trash compactor and wanted to put that space to good use with a mini beverage fridge that would fit the cutout. This is the best one you can get for the kitchen, fits perfectly as if it was always there. Looks and works the way it should, though we haven't really used it since it's been cold enough out in the pantry not to. I will update the review once we have used it for the summer months.

Electrolux E23CS78HP 36" Counter-Depth Refrigerator with PureAdvantage Filtration Systems and Theat

Electrolux E23CS78HP 36' Counter-Depth Refrigerator with PureAdvantage Filtration Systems and Theatre, Stainless SteelIn 2009 I remodeled my kitchen. I purchased all Electrolux appliances (full sized refrigerator, beverage refrigerator, dishwasher, dual fuel range and microwave). Thankfully I purchased a 5 year warranty for all appliances but the beverage refrigerator. Two and 1/2 years later... I have had to have my water/ice dispenser repaired, my dishwasher motor replaced, the control panel on the range fixed and now the control panel on the beverage refrigerator is not working.

I purchased Electrolux appliances b/c I was hoping to have reliable appliances for the next decade or so. I purchased the warranty b/c I thought occasionally there can be a problem with an appliance and I did't want to have to worry about it. I did not expect that all the appliances would be broken in some way or other in less than 3 years. I have taken mulitple days off from work in order for the repairs to be made. I have not even called to schedule a repair for the beverage refrigerator because I am too upset with Electrolux as it is to pay $500 for the repair.

I would not recommend Electrolux appliances and I would not purchase these appliances again. Very disappointing! The set looks so nice, I was so excited to have a special kitchen but now I wish I had bought something less expensive/less flashy but more reliable.
