We had the same problem with the water line freezing inside the freezer door. I determined this myself after reading all the instructions for diagnosing this problem that are all over the internet. Apparently this is a very common problem, stemming from not enough insulation between the water line and the interior panel of the freezer door. From my reading, I understand that GE's original solution was to send out a new, updated, freezer door for free, and cover the cost of it's installation. This was an expensive solution for them, which led them to a simpler fix of adding this heating element to the surface near the water line. It resolves the problem at a much lower cost to GE. And it does work.

Our experience was a phone call to GE's Customer Relations # 8003861215, option 5. I explained to them our frequent freeze issue, the solution(this part), and the common occurrence of this problem among many many frig owners. They took the model and serial number from our unit, and determined it was initially installed way back in 2001. They offered to send a repair person to diagnose it for ninety-nine dollars at our expense, along with a discount on parts & labor for the repair. I told them I know the problem, as it is chronic among these refrigerators, I can fix it myself, and I just need the part. They then gave me the option of paying a discounted thirty dollars for it with a one year warranty, or sending it for free without one...I chose FREE!

The water dispenser on my GE refrigerator would freeze up every so often; sometimes after only a couple weeks and sometimes after a few months. What a crappy design by GE. Nonetheless, after searching around a bit on the self repair sites like f**ya I discovered this little baby. I was a bit intimidated at first because it's "electrical" but decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. It's really a low voltage splice that snaps together. No wire nuts. No stripping wire. The install was very easy (maybe 30 minutes, and I took my time). It's been a few weeks and no more frozen water. The hardest part of the job was pulling off some of the trim work so I could get to the innards. Just pull up gently and it will come apart.

Installation was simple. The most difficult part was removing plastic trim piece, which became easy after I figured it out. Took approximately 10 minutes to install and reassemble the dispenser.

I wouldn't say the diagrams/instructions are extremely easy to interpret, but if you have some mechanical inclination, you should be able to figure it out.

So far have had the thing installed for a week with no freeze ups. Before installation, I would have to defrost the thing at least daily because it would freeze over night. Made the wife very happy to have filtered water again!

One tip to get it defrosted initially: Turn your freezer setting to 0 (off) and let it sit for an hour or two. Then hit the dispenser with a hair drier for about 10 15 minutes (not literally; I mean blow hot air on it).

Beware of the fine print.

I pulled it out to install it and noticed it said for Metal Liners only. Unfortunately, I have a plastic liner. I went online hoping to find someone who had tried it anyway, but couldn't. Don't all GE refrigerators have a plastic liner?

Anyway, I could see that it would fit fine, but I'm afraid to install it for fear that it will melt the plastic.

This product was relatively easy to install and it took me about 15 minutes. I knew it was the line freezing because I disconnect at the bottom of the fridge and tested the pump first.

The wire is self adhesive by the foil tape and fits right underneath the spout. I did not even have to defrost with a blow dryer, the next day all the ice in the tube melted away.

I also changed the flapper at the same time as I believe the combination of poor design and insulation for the spout and the air leakage from the ice dispenser were causing the problem.

I know it is fixed because it works great and I can feel the slight heat that is generated from the wire underneath the spout when I reach up in the device.

100% satisfied with the fix. Lot less than getting a new fridge.

BTW, I have a plastic liner and used the product anyway. I do not believe that it is getting hot enough to melt the plastic liner. It was my only option or get a new fridge.

Our first d/w was a Maytag that cleaned very well. Unfortunately, in 2 years time we had to replace the latch handle twice, it was recalled because of a potential fire, and ultimately, the tub warped and we replaced it with this Kitchenaid.

Having done extensive research, there is no one d/w that everyone loves. That being said, Kitchenaid comes up as one of the brands that most people prefer. Why not go with a middle level Kitchenaid? Again, all the research I turned up said that it was necessary to go with the higher end in order to get better quality. The higher end uses a different drying and washing process than the mid-range.

Another consideration was that only the top two models have the third tray for utensils. Both my husband and the appliance salesmen minimized the importance of this feature. Having now had the d/w for a month, it's one of my favorite features. Because of food allergies and because we homeschool, we run our d/w four times a day. I need every bit of space available for larger items. By using the upper utensil draw, I can place more items in the bottom drawer.

As I mentioned, I cook a great deal and use a 12 quart stock pot about once a week. I was concerned about being able to fit it in this d/w. Our previous Maytag was a tall tub and had a very large clearance from the bottom rack to the sprayer. No problem with the Kitchenaid.

There are several different options of cleaning cycles, and I do find myself using them. There's even an option for a shorter wash cycle. It's just as efficient, just not as energy-conscious. I haven't used it yet, but am thrilled to know it's available.

As everyone mentions, it's quiet as a whisper. I can talk on the phone right next to it with no problem.

When researching, I did turn up some concern over the side venting of the door. Have to say that our install left the vent just outside the cabinetry. No problems whatsoever.

If you do a great deal of cooking, this is the dishwasher for you!

Update: I wanted to post an update that as time has gone by my love for this dishwasher only continues. I run it roughly four times a day and have now used the 1 hour wash cycle. It's been an invaluable time saver. I've even washed our super large stock pot on the 1 hour cycle and it comes out clean.

My husband had expressed concern over the lack of a food grinder and my habit of not scraping the dishes immaculately before loading them. However, we've had no problems. I rarely remove the filter to clean it, and when I do I'm just rinsing it. It really isn't even necesssary. Almost a year later, and I still couldn't recommend it more.

This is the quietest dishwasher I have ever owned. We can run it while watching TV without any disturbance (our kitchen is open to the living room). It also gets dishes very clean. However, the drain pump went out after only 7 months of daily use. The warranty covered it but I was without a dishwasher for 2 weeks (by the time a service call was set up, then the part had to be ordered & took another week to come it). I am concerned that pump will go out again & the warranty will be expired.

I am not a fan of the 3rd shelf for small items. Tall glasses do not fit in the 2nd shelf because of that extra shelf & we rarely use that 3rd shelf. I finally pulled it out & keep it out. No need to pay extra for this feature.

I had done a lot of reading about dishwashers when I decided to replace my Frigidaire Professional that came with my house. The Frigidaire never seemed to clean as we thought it should.

Long story short this is an amazing dishwasher. my mom cooked some lasagna we left the dish and merely put it into the dishwasher in front of the pot scrubbers. from caked and baked on sauce to perfectly clean. Trust me this is an amazing dishwasher and to top it off it is quiet. It also has a ton of room and a 3rd rack for small utensils.

Our last dishwasher stopped working so it was time to get a new unit. My wife wanted a Kitchenaid because we've had pretty good luck with their products. What a disappointment!

When it showed up at our door, after waiting a week for delivery, the rear chassis wheel which is meant to help put the dishwasher in place under the counter was bent. I can overlook this.

The rear wheel which is plastic on the lower dish tray was broken off when we first pulled the tray out. Spoken with customer service for a new part, we will see how long it takes to get that in the mail.

Tonight we went to use the upper cutlery tray which is a shallow tray designed for items you don't want to put in the general utensil tray. Beth pulled the tray out and couldn't push it back in because another plastic rear wheel broke.

Absolutely frustrated given the amount of money I spent on this thing. In my opinion it should be PERFECT.

Oh by the way, when I open the box the dishwasher was soaking wet inside. So all of the documentation was essentially unusable. Next time it'll be Bosch for us.

On the upside, it is extremely quiet and I often will open the unit not knowing it is running. It also does a really good job cleaning our dishes. In that respect it's the best dishwasher we've had in a long time. My concern is the overall life of the product. Given that so many parts have broken already.

Love the dishwasher. Quiet, quiet, quiet. And super clean results. Recommend it highly. However, the vendor had to send three units before we got one that was undamaged. I'm not sure it was their shipper's (Manna Distributing) fault. The boxes were undamaged but the dishwashers were dented and severly damaged. Might have been damaged at the factory and boxed that way. Who knows. But at least the vendor kept trying and never questioned that the damage was there.

I am aware of the number of negative reviews on this and other brands of the same product so the reading was carefully done and it came down to this one after about three days of examining various remarks on different sites. It's not easy picking one because these wine refrigs come across as sensitive and not really durable or built for longevity. Once I subtracted the extraordinary negative reviews for the different brands, which must come from competitors, and try to estimate how many dumbazzes do not treat the appliance properly during set up, then I got the percentage of reviews I needed to determine who prevailed. Cost, design, and features then completed the selection process.

Wine Enthusiast, according to some, cannot be trusted for customer service or quality. Some of the same reasoning, however, can be found for other brands. So, I chose this one based on the design (tall and slim) so it would fit between a basement bookshelf and table, noise (it is very quiet), attractiveness in a living area (black metal with tempered glass front surrounded by stainless steel trim), and cost for the goods received (18 bottles 750ml each storage for Amazon's price proved highly desirable).

Future buyers caveat: DO NOT do anything with it until you read the small manual included which you will find inside the unit. Too many people do not understand the need for the air temp parameters in the room where it will be located, allowing the unit to reach room temp before plugging it in, keeping it upright for at least 2 hours before plugging it in (I let mine sit overnight just to be sure any lubricants in it settled properly), and positioning it where it will get the best ventilation around the the sides and back. This is not a unit to be built in under a cabinet and you have to keep it away from air conditioners or heat sources. There is a statement in the manual that reads "In order to reach the lowest temperature (lower zone), the best ambient temperature will be around 60-65 F". Mine is in the finished basement area where the temp is typically 66 in the winter and might get to 70 in the summer on very hot days.

When you plug it in you should set the temps desired and wait for the two sections to reach those temps before loading in case there might be some type of malfunction. I left mine overnight because after 3 hours it was still adjusting and it was time for lights out. The next morning the two sections were correctly reading my settings. If you have difficulty remembering, recall that HEAT RISES so the top part should hold the reds and be set warmer and the lower will have your whites which will be 8-10 degrees cooler. The design provides different high and low for each section.

I then loaded the wine bottles that had been in the refrigerator (where the interior temp was 40deg) and both sections of the wine refrig dropped a few degrees. About four hours later the sections were reading back to the settings. Remember that these little starter coolers are not for fine expensive wines but are only to allow you to provide your bottle at the proper drinking temperature when the meal is ready...in addition to freeing up all of your refrigerator space if you like to have 10 to 18 bottles on hand of different varietals.

So, after 48 hours I can tell you that everything is mellow and the first bottle from the Slimline was at just the right temp for the Sunday meal. No more fumbling through a lot of bottles on a fridge shelf, estimating when to take the bottle out and leaving it on the table with the hope that it will be at the right temp when the serving plates are passed around.

If there are electronic problems in the near future, i.e. up to one year, I will return and update. WARNING: I thought I would look into Wine Enthusiast's 2,3 and 5 year extended warranty plans considering the problems that these types of appliances have. When I clicked on each one all three stated that due to "overwhelming demand" the plan was no longer available. Something smells about that notice. How does a company "run out" of extended warranties unless they already know that the consumer bought a lemon? At best, they should not have even offered such a plan on their site if they could not deliver. This was something I was unaware of until after delivery and I had to register the unit with the company.

The "silent" and "ultra quiet" claims from Wine Enthusiast are completely bogus.

I bought one of these to fit in a smallspace in our living room, but can't use it there because the 'silent' fridge is so loud that it would be very distracting when we are watching TV it's that loud.

Now I have it inside a closet (with the closet door closed) over 50 feet away from the living room and yet we can still occasionally hear it.

BTW, I also contacted WineEnthusiast customer support online, and recieved an email from them promissing a response within 2 working days. That was several weeks ago, and despite several follow-up emails to them I got no response at all (and yes, I checked my spam filters). I finally contacted them by phone and asked why I had recieved no response no explanation given, and no apology for being utterly unresponsive.

Silent my foot... don't believe the hype.

I Purchase this refrigerator is real loud . Is louder than my big refrigerator . If i would know I wouldnt purchase it.

I spent far too many hours researching wine fridges before settling on this one. That said, calling it a "fridge" is a bit inaccurate. These "budget" units use fans and some fancy electrical stuff to create the not-so-low temperatures your wines need for proper storage. They use less electricity than a refrigerator, they are very quiet, and they don't get down to freezing temperatures.

Unlike many, however, this cooler DOES get cold enough for proper white wine storage (I have it set to 46 degrees). The dual zone function is awesome (I have my reds at 55). You get nine bottles per zone. It's very attractive, 100% silent (folks saying theirs isn't have defective units and should return), and works great. If you're on the fence, make the leap; this has taken our wine consumption to new levels (quality, not quantity).

My only complaint would be that the wire racks are a bit flimsy and the storage space is very tight, which means you won't be able to fit 18 bottles if you have anything even a little bit oversized (champagne).

Save your time and rely on my research. This is an outstanding product.

UPDATE: Dropped down to 3-stars. After a few weeks of use (no changes in the product's environment), the unit is unable to hold the correct temperature for reds. It's still rocking for my whites, but it's too cold for reds (set to 55, but it won't go above 51). Could be worse, but worth mentioning.

It was very quiet and cooled exceptionally well, but after about a week of it constantly running it stopped working. there was so much condensation inside the back that the mini fridge just shut down. I bought this refridgerator after remodeling my basement and adding a bar, thinking it would be a perfect small fridge for that purpose. After about 6 months, I noticed the gasket around the door failed and the door was hanging open, substantially raising my electric bill. I decided to turn it off until I could fix the gasket. Once I turned it back on, it no longer got cold -AT ALL. It would not even get a little cool--nothing!

There is not a lot to a refridgerator, so I think the compressor must have failed. Keep looking if you are consideraing a GE.

I had one of these installed several years ago and it has the noisiest compressor I've ever heard. It still functions but the price implies it is a better quality product than it is.

I purchased a pack of these filters for my refrigerator. Upon arrival I followed the enclosed instruction and both of the filters leaked after installation (the original one never leaked at all, even after I reinstalled it). I contacted the seller and was informed that I should return them for a full refund, including return shipping. I returned the filters and wasn't refunded fully on the return shipping. The excuse was that Amazon would only allow a $9.00 refund even though it cost me $12.80 to return them. Bottom line is that the filters are of a defective design (the connections are poorly made) and I am still out $3.80 with nothing but aggravation to show for my original purchase. You read a lot of reviews of wine coolers being too loud or do not cool properly. This may be a direct result of people not reading directions. When you move a refrigerator of any kind the unit is supposed to be kept upright. The reason for this is because there is very thick lubricant (oil) in the compressor unit. If the refrigerator has been moved, stored, or delivered sideways the oil must be given time to drain back into the compressor properly. If your unit was just delivered to you and the box is upright then you have to assume that it could have been on the truck for several days. This means the oil is not in the correct position in the compressor to be turned on as soon as you bring it home. The box this unit was shipped in is large and will more than likely have to be put on its side to fit in your vehicle. The instructions with this unit clearly state not to turn the unit on for a few hours to allow the lubricant to settle properly. I allowed for three hours to pass before plugging the unit in. Additionally, my wine was in my regular refrigerator and already cold when I put them in this cooler. This takes the unit less work to get the temperature down. This unit is very quiet and is keeping the temperature steady. You can hear the fan but during a normal conversation or with the tv on you have to really listen for it. For the money, this is a very nice and attractive unit.

I just got this yesterday and set it to 57 and it works perfectly. I just purchased some reds and opened door stacked them in there, fit perfectly and the temp didn't budge. I had a cheap (1/2 priced) 6 bottle Emerson that worked well for 4 years, now it won't cool down, it is being affected my our Indian Summer heat, which it never mattered before how hot my place got. This new one looks soooo much better, very quiet, no complaints at all, so far. I will do another post if anything changes, but so far I love it. Btw, it is positioned exactly next to my old one. So the placment is the same, and staying at a cool 57! Exactly where I want it. It is about 68 in my condo right now.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at this model when it arrived over a year ago. I had room for bottles with the corks placed back in, in addition to having room for wine stoppers as well. It also remembered where the thermostat was set to in the event of a power outage. It would go back to the setting once power was restored.

HOWEVER...Unit died right after the 1 year mark. Doesn't it always happen that way?

We have owned this refrigerator for 6 years, previously replaced the vegetable drawer. The meat drawer cracked and broke, so we ordered this for a replacement. When it arrived, the box was intact, but the drawer had the corner broken off. I think the real problem is that the drawers are poorly made. They are thin cheap plastic. This is not a cheap refrigerator, so I don't understand why they put such a cheap drawer in the refrigerator.

I was happy to get this delivered so quickly... my husband had cracked the front of ours. I opened the big box and found the pan suspended by a piece of cut-out cardboard which fit snugly in the box. (No other type of padding.) I took it out, and to my dismay, the back corner of the pan was broken off and laying in the bottom of the box. It would be too bothersome to ship it back, wait for a refund, order another one, wait for it to be shipped, etc. etc., so I am keeping it and using it BROKEN, but for $44 it should have arrived intact. How about a little more quality control (and bubble wrap) in the shipping department??
