SEE the UPDATE at the bottom of this review.

I've owned this fridge for three months now, and for the price, it has performed reasonably well--so far. When you add together the price and the shipping rates, you probably won't be able to find a cheaper thermoelectric wine fridge with this storage capacity. (I consider the non-vibrating feature of thermoelectric fridges an important requirement for cellaring wine long term.) However, there are some definite deficiencies and one really big question mark about long-term performance.

As my wine collection has grown, I've purchased several wine fridges from different manufacturers. Of the four wine fridges I now own, this one has the cheapest look and feel. Yes, it looks quite attractive from a distance, but when you get up close, you notice that every element of its construction seems just a little (and sometimes a lot) flimsier than my other fridges. For example, the material used for the inside walls of this fridge looks and feels like extremely thin plastic that could easily crack or be punctured. (The plastic liner seems comparable in weight and thickness to the thin plastic that is often used for packagaing small electronics accessories like headphones or video cables.) This plastic inside wall liner will probably hold up just fine if treated gently, but it seems like a clue to overall quality.

Similarly, the chrome trays that hold the bottles are just a little thinner, lighter, and flimsier than those in my other wine fridges. Speaking of the trays, with a tray loaded with bottles, you are supposed to be able to pull it out a few inches to get easier access to the bottles and a better view of the label. But the trays on this fridge do not slide smoothly once they are loaded with wine. Instead, they snag and get hung up. In fact, I worry that the force required to unstick and pull out a tray with bottles on it either might cause the bottles to come flying out on onto the floor or might tear the thin plastic that lines the inside walls of the fridge. So to get a tray out safely, you have to remove the bottles first, which defeats the purpose of having trays that are supposed to slide partway out for easier viewing and access.

With gentle and careful use, you can probably avoid problems with the flimsy physical construction of this fridge; however, the thing that worries me most about this fridge is the long-term endurance of the thermoelectric cooling device. This fridge sits side-by-side with another fridge I own that was made by another manufacturer and has exactly the same storage capacity. Compared to the other manufacturer's fridge, the AW fridge's cooling device kicks on and runs more often and longer--probably more than twice as long--to maintain the same temperature. With the temp set at 55 degrees, this fridge's cooling system runs almost non-stop, never shutting off for more than just a few minutes before kicking back on for another long stretch, and that's what makes me worry about long term durability. Because of my concern about the cooling device running constantly, I've raised the temp setting from 55 to 58 degrees, and that seems to help somewhat, but this thermoelectric fridge's cooling device still runs much more often and much longer with the setting at 58 degrees than my other same-size thermoelectric fridge does at 55. It only makes sense that the more often the cooling device kicks on, and the longer it runs, the shorter will be its working lifespan.

One last word to the wise: For those who are just starting to appreciate the pleasures and advantages of cellaring your own wine, maybe it makes sense to buy a small cheap "starter" unit until you can decide whether your wine bug is a temporary infection, a manageable illness, or a lifelong obsession. But before doing as I did--buying a second, and then a third, and then a fourth fairly small fridge--consider taking the money you'd spend on a bunch of small fridges and instead putting those dollars into the cost of one higher quality, higher capacity unit that will solve your wine-storage needs over the long haul. Better yet, find 25 or 30 cubic feet of space under the stairs or in a closet of your house, wall it off, put in racks, insulate it, and buy a cooling unit to refrigerate it, to make your own mini-cellar where you can easily store several hundred bottles.

The Bottom Line: This fridge seems like a fair deal for the price, but if I had it to do over, I think I'd be better off in the long haul spending just a little more for a probably more durable fridge of the same size (which you can find on sale for not that much more), or putting the money into a much larger fridge or cellaring system that would better satisfy both present and future wine storage needs.

UPDATE: The original review above was written in July 2009, about three months after I purchased this wine frig in early April 2009. This update was written in mid-August 2010. Today my New Air 28 bottle wine frig died. It lasted about 16 months. To reflect the short life span, I've deducted a star, reducing my rating to two stars. This unit never was able to get down to 55 degrees. The coldest it could do was 60 or 61. So to keep the unit from overworking itself, I set the temp to 60, instead of 55. Two of my three comparable Wine Enthusiast branded units are still running. One of my three WineEnth branded units has also died, so the fact is, none of these thermo-electric units can be expected to last very long. As stated in my original review above, rather of buying one or more of these cheapie units, I would recommend putting that money into a better product that will hold more bottles, or better yet, build your own mini-cellar in closet or under a stairway.

Let's talk about the pros and cons of this Thermoelectric Wine Cooler so you know what to expect. On the plus sideLook and Price. This cooler looks really good, especially when you turn on the small blue LED light which envelopes the interior. And the price is inexpensive in the world of thermoelectric coolers. On the con side-Function. First, it definitely is not "silent" but hums at a level that your brain will quickly assign to "background" noise. Secondly, a digital temperature readout provides a sense of satisfaction that your vino is comfortably cool. However, don't mistake this with the actual temperature inside, which will fluctuate as high as 10 degrees above readout as evidenced by an internal thermometer we placed inside. To summarize, if looks are more important to you than substance or you just need something to keep a chill on your favorite table wines, this bling is for you. Expensive wine needs another home.

Quick update as of June 6, 2011 this little gem has literally achieved room temperature. No parts available anywhere to fix the temperature control board. So, it lasted less than 2 years and I don't think I would recommend anyone purchase this unit, unless you're a big fan of planned obsolescence.

I bought two of these, one for Reds, one for Whites. While they ran, they were very quiet and cooled just fine. However, both of them died completely after the 1 year warranty expired, but within 2 years, basically around 15 months and 18 months respectively. Air and Water said the best they would do is sell me replacement parts.

Also note, if you lose power or unplug these, they reset to the coldest temp setting possible. No memory for what temp you set them to.

These are the cheapest coolers, per bottle of storage, on the market but at the expense of reliability. I won't be buying these again, or from Air and Water.

This is the worst refrigerator I've ever owned. As another reviewer mentioned, the fan runs constantly, even when the set temperature is reached. And it won't go below 54F under any conditions, so it's really limited in what it can store. The holes in the door frame don't line up with the holes in the door glass, so the door pull can't be installed. The interior is plastic, and the shelves only pull out about half-way before they start to fall out of the slots in the walls--no bearings, no draws, just a slot.

And it's loud! I think I'd prefer a standard compressor-based unit (vibration problems aside); I've had cheap student dorm-room refrigerators that were quieter.

The kicker is that the cost to return it via UPS is almost as much as the refund would be, so it's probably not worth it.

Lesson learned--don't buy single-sourced products that can't be tested first.

OK for shorter-term wine storage able to keep temp around 65F for the most part, when ambient temp is < 80F.

After 1 year, the fan and/or logic board died. So in computing price per bottle of storage, factor in amortization over 1-2 years tops, not 5-10 years that's typical for higher-quality wine cabinets.

Whirlpool 2200859 Thermostat for Refrigerator

Whirlpool 2200859 Thermostat for RefrigeratorThe local parts dealer here (Irvine, CA) wanted about $80 for the same part. Had to wait a few extra days as only UPS ground was available, but it was simple to replace (note there is no documentation of any kind included) and fixed the problem. Old thermostat was intermittent fridge would run fine for awhile, then not run for several hours; had to manually fiddle with the cold control to get it to run again. The only reason I didn't rate this as five stars was it seems to have a very narrow temperature range. Instead of cycling on or off every half-hour or so, it now cycles about every 10 minutes. The internal temperature is probably more stable, but I don't know if this will cause the compressor start components to wear out sooner.

The repairman wanted over $300.00 to fix the fridge. We fixed it with this thermostat for under $40.00. And we got a nice boost to our self esteem in the process. YES YOU CAN DO YOUR OWN REPAIRS!! :)

I was given this unit as a gift about 2 years ago. We kept it in optimal temperatures, and cleaned the air filters regularly. Ventilation was not an issue.

Top cooler stop working after a year, and the lower cooler just went out. I tried finding replacement parts and no luck. You truly do get what you paid for. Needless to say, this one is going in the trash.

At first I liked the wine cooler with it's dual temp control, however the lower cooler went out on me. The display LCD read "Er" and when you went to the troubleshoot section on the manual, it stated that it was an error code, however it did not state how to clear or fix it. Thankfully I had 1 more month before my 1yr warranty would have expired. Don't know if I can recommend this product based on this experience.

Bought the cooler in March 2009. It worked well until a week ago, then the upper compartment went dead (no light, no cooling)and the lower compartment started emitting a ticking sound. Wrote to the company, here is their reply:

I love this unit, at the time of the purchase I liked it because the lower part is for the reds and I was drinking more reds. Love the dual zone, the light is great to find what you want before opening the door, great piece in any room. It does run alot or all the time, it sounds like a computer fan so it is not loud to the point of being a problem I have mine in the dining room and has never been an issue, most days we do not even notice it running. Bought March 2010

Update 4/27/11 the upper cooler keeps kicking in and out and not keeping temp anymore. The bottom is still working for now just waiting for that one to stop.

True T-23, 1 Door, 23 cu ft Reach-In Refrigerator
  • True T-23

We were disappointed that the refrigerator only lasted 1 year beyond the warranty. We had to use the warranty during the 5 years to repair the compressor. The compressor then went out again after the warranty had expired 1 year and it would have cost almost as much to replace it and pay for a repair person to fix it as it would have to buy a new one.

GE PSCS3RGXSS Profile 23.3 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel Counter Depth Side-By-Side Refrigerator

GE PSCS3RGXSS Profile 23.3 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel Counter Depth Side-By-Side RefrigeratorNot only does GE make the most worthless piece of cr@p appliances, they also have the all-time worst customer service.

Have gone through two of these refrigerators. The first one shook and squeaked like crazy every time we opened its door. The repair tech's solution was to "level" the fridge. They "leveled" the fridge over 10 times in 18 months. The first fridge also frequently made a very loud, random clicking noise. The noise could be heard over the TV, movies, etc... It was extraordinarily disturbing, especially when the family is trying to have a quiet dinner or even watch a movie in the living room. After going through hell (about 20-30 hours on the phone and over a dozen useless, failed service calls) GE finally replaced the fridge (only because the developer of our new house forced the local sales rep to replace it; GE customer service basically told us to F-off). And the new fridge makes an even louder clicking sound! WTF?!

Avoid ALL GE products like the plague. They are a worthless company that doesn't give a rat's a55 about customer service and cares even less about taking thousands of your hard-earned dollars in exchange for a useless product that is designed to fail miserably.

The posting for this product wasn't the most clear. I'm not sure who's fault it was (they say me, I say them) but the product wasn't the right size. It appeared to be to me when I ordered it, as it stated it was compatible with most these brands (x,y, and z) and my fridge was one of those, but I guess not my model.

I contacted them and shipped the shelves back at my own expense. They gave me a full refund. I may do business with them again, but would probably prefer a contact number to confirm that a product is correct before ordering. They were very professional in their demeanor to me and I have no real complaints. I would have preferred if they covered my $10 shipping to return the item, but since it may have been my fault I sucked it up and didn't bother asking for it from them.

If you know what you want, I would suggest using their company. Just be sure before you order!

This item worked perfectly for a Kenmore Elite 596.75539400. Slid right in the door with no problems. Price is cheaper than sears too. Very happy with this purchase.

I verified the part # through the manufcturer's website first. It took a whole 5 minutes to make sure I was buying the right part. If you do your research, you'll know whether the product will fit your model or not. It's not the seller's job to do that, in my opinion.

I inadvertently did not carefully check my notification and the wrong item was ordered. It was difficult to find out how to get in touch with the vendor and then I had to pay postage because the error was my fault. The item was packaged unprofessionally, it was lucky it was not broken. I ended up ordering the proper shelf direct from another source. Not a good experience with the vendor even though the error was mine

Amana Refrigerator Defrost Timer 10530703

Amana Refrigerator Defrost Timer 10530703Item fits/works fine. Through Amazon this item was less than 1/2 price the cost of the factory replacement part & I expected this one to be a cheap copy of the original. However the original Kenmore part appears to be manufactured in the same Chinese factory, as all markings are identical.

Seems to have fixed the icing up issue in the freezer with the timer never kicking over to defrost. Everything seems to be working great now. Still need to install the thermostat as a precaution but the timer is working great.

Build seems comparable to original (which lasted 23 years). Simple. Power off. 3 screws. Unplug the old. Plug in the new. Close it up. Power on. So far so good. I used the original self tapping screws instead of the nuts and bolts supplied though. Much easier in the tight space.

It fits and does the job. But fridge still occasionally freezes the milk, have to manually defrost by turning the timer's knob to OFF a few times (extending the defrost time several fold) then it is OK for a few months. Or weeks. Kind of unpredictable. I think ice forms in the air channel between the freezer and the fridge (the floor of the freezer) and maybe locks the flap that regulates the air flow down into the fridge part. Whatever it is, this timer is supposed to prevent ice buildup by turning on a heater. I wonder if the heater is doing its job. May just junk the fridge if it quits regulating entirely.

Looked up a replacement on the Fridgidair website, ordered it on Amazon, got it in a couple of days. Installation was fairly easy, thanks to a U-Tube demonstration. Works great nice and quiet.

I had a leak on my dish washer and figured out the PN I needed from a web search. I was pleasantly surprised (again) that Amazon had it and at a much better price than anywhere else. This kit does include the two O-rings you should replace at the same time.

Daewoo KOR6L0B 0.7 Cu. Ft. 600 Watt Compact Microwave

Daewoo KOR6L0B 0.7 Cu. Ft. 600 Watt Compact MicrowaveIt is very useful in everywhere. Small size and enough power. No problem so far.

Dimension of this Item WxDxH 17.6 x 12.8 x 10.6

Pros it's cute, it works, the door is cooperative, the price is right so far I'm very happy.

Cons it's small (but really now, you should be able to tell that by the 0.7 Cubic feet) and it's low power so it takes longer which is why I bought it. After my last Microwave one of those industrial strength giants kept flipping the circuit breaker in my old building, and I got some angry comments from my super, I bought the lowest watt microthingy I could find, and so far no blown circuits so I'm happy, even if it does take 50% longer to cook stuff. And for what this costs I'm very happy.

Other cons are any plates of any real size don't fit and the glass is hard to see through so it's hard to tell when things are starting to boil but pros (no blown circuits) far outweigh the cons and the price is literally 1/7th of what I paid for my last microwave.

Frigidaire Refrigerator Water Dispenser Actuator 241685703

Frigidaire Refrigerator Water Dispenser Actuator 241685703
  • Genuine Replacement Part
  • Replaces 5304433613
  • If unsure, please ask your seller if it would fit your model

Plastic piece does not have a "bottom out" position so if someone presses too hard on it, it will break. Hard to believe $75 is a good deal on this piece of plastic with 2 led's, but is the best deal I could find.

Buy Frigidaire Refrigerator Water Dispenser Actuator 241685703 Now

When our actuator snapped into two pieces last week, I found this to be the most reasonably-priced replacement on the web. BUT, since it still means spending $70, I held off and went to Home Depot and spent 20 minutes comparing different plastic-fusing glues. I went with Henkel 681925 Loctite 0.07-Ounce Super Glue Plastic Bonder, which is also sold here on amazon.com

Following the instructions (applying the primer on both surfaces, waiting for 60 seconds and then applying the glue sparingly on one of the two surfaces you want fused together), I added another thin bead of glue to the joint then carefully held the two pieces together with blue masking tape. I left the tape on for about 24 hours, and it's been five days since and the glued together pieces are staying put. Feels like it never broke. Of course, our house has no kids--just my husband and I so we don't really slam the glass against the lever, which is something kids could easily do.

Note: I left the the actuator on the freezer door which means I did not need to use any tools (it broke where the top of the clear and black lever tapers off suddenly narrows but thickens towards the top).

Our Fridge was making a squeaky noise up in the freezer area whenever it fired up for the cooling. I looked on the back of the fridge and noticed a cheat sheet for repair persons that had a drawing and replacement parts numbers. I realized it had to be the evaporator fan failing. I "googled" something like "replace evaporator fan fridge" and found a video on Youtube of someone doing a typical replacement. After realizing how easy it was and I wasn't going to die doing it I searched for the part # on Amazon and found it. This isn't the exact model number but it seems it is the more up to date model. The seller didn't offer expedited shipping but it came in three days! Our fridge is a basic Hotpoint model and its been working great now for several weeks after about 5 minutes of actual work. Side bonus?good excuse to clean out the freezer (you'll be amazed what you find).

So my fridge got louder and louder, and recently had lost some cooling in the freezer. Apparently the original motor, which blows on the freezer and is called evaporator fan motor, was loose at the axle, so the fan got caught on its housing.

Well it's really model WR60X10141, as it appears on this and the original GE motor. Only the documentation refers to WR60X10046, but either way I wasn't able to find a GE-made replacement. This is working as expected so far. Will update if it stops.
