Maytag MVWB950YG Bravos 4.6 Cu. Ft. GraniteTop Load Washer - Energy Star

Maytag MVWB950YG Bravos 4.6 Cu. Ft. GraniteTop Load Washer - Energy StarI absolutely hate this washer. I've owned it for 18 months now and every time I use it I regret the purchase. Here are some of the reasons I hate it.

1. It uses waaaaay too little water. When I bought it the salesman told me that the machine fills to the top of the clothes plus 1 gallon. That is simply not true. The clothes stick out above the top of the water by 9 inches. The water level is slightly adjustable by the soil level setting but this only changes the level by an inch or two. I have experimented for hours to try to increase the water level the machine is determined to keep the level low probably so that they can get their highest-level energy star rating. Now you may think that it is a good thing for it to use too little water but when you see how harsh it is on your clothes (item 2 below) and how wrinkled the clothes get (item 4 below) you will change your mind.

2. It is extremely harsh on clothes. When I bought it the salesman told me that the machine is more gentle than older style agitator machines. That is completely untrue. This washer pills clothes visibly with every single wash. Brand new towels appear old and worn after a few washes. Here is why it is so harsh. The clothes throughout the load are wet but they are not submerged in water. Only the bottom of the load is submerged in water. The washer tries to pull the clothes up and down into and out of the water at the bottom. It does so by twisting and spinning them, similar to the way clothes are twisted when you wring them out. This is harmful for clothes. When clothes are submerged in water (as in older washers) the water acts as a cushion against rubbing. The water is moved by the agitator and the clothes glide around in it. The higher the water-to-clothes ratio the more gentle it is on the clothes. The lower the water-to-clothes ratio, the more tightly the clothes are packed and the more abrasive the rubbing is. This washer is the most extreme case of a low water-to-clothes ratio because the clothes aren't even submerged at all. They are wet and rubbing hard against one another. To make matters worse the wringing action, which is done very tightly, is very harmful for anything but the sturdiest of fabrics. Imagine taking a wet shirt and twisting it as hard as you can from end to end in a wringing action. This is what clothes endure during each load.

3. There is no way to wash delicates in this washer. For all the reasons mentioned in 2, there is no setting on this washer that is acceptable for delicate clothes. The handwash cycle on this washer is much harsher than the normal cycle was on my old washer. None of my work clothes can tolerate it.

4. Clothes come out incredibly wrinkled, twisted, and knotted. As mentioned in 2, this washer needs to twist and knot items to move them in and out of the water. When the load is done they remain this way. Bras are all knotted together in one giant mess that takes forever to undo. I have to first shake items out to untwist them and then dry them on a higher heat setting than I would otherwise use to get the wrinkling out. Use of the lower-speed spin cycle doesn't really help much because the problem is largely due to the washing portion of the cycle. The high-speed spin cycle only sets the twisting in even harder.

5. There is no way to change washer settings after the load has started. How many times have you started a load and then decided, "oops I'd rather use handwash" or "I'd rather use high-speed spin after all". Well forget about changing your mind on this washer. This washer goes through an extensive calibration cycle at the beginning of each load to figure out how much water to use. The calculations it does during this time are based on the cycle settings such as soil level, load type, etc. It can't let you change settings once the calibration cycle has started because its calculations will get messed up. Maytag says that all you need to do is press cancel and restart but what makes this so incredibly annoying is that cancel drains all the water from the washer. It often happens to me that I want to change settings after the washer is partly full of water plus soap. To make a setting change I have to throw away the entire load of water and soap. You wouldn't believe the amount of water I've wasted because of needing to press cancel.

6. The soak cycle wastes water and soap because once the soak cycle is complete there is no way to continue using the same water to complete a wash. It gives you no option but to drain the entire tub after the soak cycle. Then when you want to wash you have to refill it again and add more soap.

7. The calibration cycle takes a long time. As mentioned in 5, this washer goes through an extensive calibration cycle at the beginning of each load to figure out how much water to use. It takes about 5 minutes and makes the cycle take that much longer with the only benefit that it is deciding on the "optimal" amount of water to use. I would much rather have the level manually selectable and the cycle 5 minutes shorter.

8. The electronic smarts are very limiting and annoying. The salesman told me "this washer is so great that it won't allow you to damage your delicates". What he meant is that the washer limits your options depending on what cycle you have selected. So for example, if you have the washer set to the handwash agitation, it won't let you use high-speed spin or let you use warm water. Or if you use the soak cycle it wont let you use hot water. Or if you use the soak cycle there is no way to get delicate agitation. There is no way to override their setting limits. How ridiculous! I know better than some engineer at Maytag what options are appropriate for me. To think that they advertise this as a feature?!?

9. The lid locks. Sometimes when washing delicates I like to be able to keep the lid open during agitation so that I can assist with special pieces. This washer won't allow any cycle to continue with the lid open although I did find a way to bypass the lid lock function.

There is only one positive thing about this washer. I like the glass lid because it lets me see how harshly the washer is twisting my clothes.

Some reviewers here have commented that maybe I did not properly follow the instructions about how to distribute clothes within the washer. That is not true. I read and follow the instructions perfectly it doesn't help.

The first day after I got this washer I tried to return it but the store wouldn't take it back. I called Maytag and begged them to tell me how to increase the water level. I tried to pay a service person to increase the water level. I kept being told there is absolutely no way to increase the water level.

I am an electrical engineer and I got so frustrated with Maytag that I spent about 8 hours working out a way to make the water level on this washer adjustable. It requires adding a potentiometer (variable resistor) to the control board that is accessible from the top of the washer. The potentiometer adds an offset of water to the level. Right now I have it set to add an extra 10 inches of water so that the clothes are completely but just barely submerged. It makes a huge difference in wear and tear on clothes and makes the handwash cycle usable. The washer is now just barely bearable. If you want to use my technique for adjusting water level, email me at sueonline@gmail.com and I'd be more than happy to share the method with you (for free). I even have pictures showing the control board modification.

UPDATE: During the past 12 months I have recieved about 500 emails from people who purchased this washer and are searching online for how to increase the water level. They come across my review and email me. I hear the same story over and over again from them. They bought this washer and hate it fiercely and want help increasing the water level. I am including below some examples of the email responses I've gotten to my review. I have not edited these emails these are the exact words of others.

"I was so happy to find your review of the Maytag Bravos washer on Amazon. I too have this washer and share the same frustrations. I have missed my "old fashioned" washer since the first wash! My family and I spent the holidays with family out of state who had a machine that actually fills up with water and allows you to manipulate settings. This was the highlight of my vacation...lol!"

"We read your review on the Bravos Maytag washing maching and totally agree. I have had mine about the same amount of time and I am completed frustrated. It just doesn't wash the clothing. If you would be so kind as to send us your fix, we would greatly appreciate it. My husband is a mechanical engineer and will happily rip into it; otherwise, I may just go back to my old machine in the basement."

"I agree with your entire post! I never thought to ask can I soak clothes in this produce? I have tried to soak socks and there was not enough water to cover them. This washer and dryer pair does not work as advertised. Could you please send the water adjustment and computer map."

"Hello,I read your review on amazon.com and would really appreciate your information on how to increase the water level. I bought the machine 5 days ago and completely agree with your review."

"Kudos to you for a comprehensive break-down of frustration of the Maytag BRAVOS! Bravo for nothing this machine is the bane of my existence. It is ruining our clothes and gone are the days when we could simply dry laundry on the line now every last bit has to be 'fluffed' in the dryer to remove the annoying wrinkles! If you would kindly provide the details of how you 'outsmarted' your maching re: water level, that would be great!"

"could you please send me your instructions on how to fix my piece of junk washing machine?... is this something that i could have an electrician fix easily?... thanks so much for your help..."

"Your description of the water level problem is almost word for word my own, ion all its detail. If you can help, I would like to try to make the fix -assuming a simple home workshop kind of guy can do it with your help."

"Thank you so much for your Amazon review of the Bravos....I am not an engineer but I could have written your review! Dear Dumb Engineers at Maytag Who Have Never Apparently Done Laundry In Your Lives: WATER CUSHIONS THE CLOTHES!!!!!! WATER RINSES THE SOAP OFF!!!!! WATER HELPS REMOVE THE DIRT!!!!!! This washer is like taking your clothes to the river and beating them on a rock. My garden hose is outside the laundry room door; I have considered filling the washer myself! I have problems with stains, smells, towels getting "pulls". Delicate? Handwash? Good luck! And why does the "soak" cycle agitate?!!!"

"I saw online your review of the Bravos XL washing macine. We share you critic of this Maytag model. Could you please email us as to how you modified the Maytag to allow a higher water fill level. It would be much appreciated. I would like to modify the Maytag to make it useable. Thanks in advance."

"Thanks for the post on Amazon about the Brovos XL Washer. I'm very frustrated with all the points you laid out. If I could increase the water level that would be a great benefit and maybe I can live with the forced settings."

I agree on a number of points w/the original author. My clothing was quite twisted. Also, I simply LOVE when a salesperson tells you the water level adjusts to "your load". That statement has proven to be BS. Given these issues, I still love this washer compared to the devil spawn front loading Bosch I had. THAT machine drove me mad for 6+ years. Nothing is as good as the old days when appliances lasted 15-20 years. This is the first time I've actually purchased an extended warranty on a stinkin' washer/dryer because I don't trust ANYTHING available to the average consumer these days. Pretty pathetic, considering the cost of appliances nowadays and their nonsensical "energy" saving features. These so called energy saving features are pretty much useless.

In replacing our Whirlpool washer, we decided to try a trusted name in the industry, Maytag, for our next purchase. What a huge disappointed from the Maytag I owned 15 years ago. The washer is suppose to save money by using less water and result in reduced drying time. The only thing this washer does is stain clothes because the detergent doesn't adequately distribute during the wash cycle. Also, it is very hard on clothes even in the delicate cycle. I have tried every tip in the manual to try and get better results but no luck. This is absolutely the worst appliance I have ever owned and so regret my purchase 6 months ago. My daughter purchased the same model at the same time and also has the same complaints. If you are looking for half cleaned clothes that are twisted to pieces, this is the machine for you. AWFUL MACHINE....save your money and frustration. Maytag should be ashamed to put their name on this piece of junk!!!!!

Love this machine. The only con is the water level is controlled by the machine and that sucks. As far as I know that`s true of all the new models. It is the stupidest idea in the world. My last Maytag I controlled the water level. Other wise it`s great. Clean clothes-a timer to know then it`s done. Some reviews complain about the balance factor. That depends on the idiot that installs it. It does not a have a balance problem if a competent delivery person sets it up right. My old Maytag got out of balance when we moved it. This new one added the fabric softener just right. It washes them clean and doesn`t tear them up. Gentle and delicate clothes get clean. Bells and whistles for everything. I suggest you check the other reviews at different stores. Most are positive.

Horrible washer, not enough water for clothes, twisted clothes, holes in t-shirts.

I had a Neptune front loader that had a class action suit and it was 20X better than this washer!

Whirlpool Part Number 8171398A: DEODORIZER

Whirlpool Part Number 8171398A: DEODORIZERFor years I have been looking for a product that will help eliminate odors in the refrigerator and freezer. I was skeptic at first but then I heard about charcoal being used in refrigerators and decided to give it a try. Great product!

We recently bought a house and after moving in noticed an odor in the refrigerator that kept coming back no matter how thoroughly we cleaned it out. I bought one of these for the refrigerator and one for the freezer about a month ago and so far so clean.

Buy Whirlpool Part Number 8171398A: DEODORIZER Now

What I received was not the refrigerator deodorizer as pictured, which I had purchased before and been happy with. What I received was two cardboard boxes with holes in them. I could have gone to my local grocery store and bought Arm & Hammer baking soda and punched some holes in the box and gotten the same result. Can't believe they charged me $12.60 each for them! Before I left negative feedback, I contacted the seller with my complaint but never received any response. Very poor service on a VERY bad product. Maybe someone from Amazon will read this and contact me---I hope so as this has left a very negative impression on me.

The items are NOT manufactured by Whirlpool but by a different company. The package is flimsy cardboard, not plastic as pictured and as previously sold. The listing says it lasts for a year but the package says replace after six months. I have written to Amazon complaining about these misrepresentations. Good luck if you still want to buy this.

My wife and I purchased this item last year when the fridge started giving off a strange smell. We had emptied it and cleaned it with vinegar, soap, comet, nothing would get rid of the smell which I guess had securely fastened itself in the vents. We bought these as a last resort and they did the trick (Although I think the cleanings got rid of the original source of the smell so you might want to do that as well). We put them in the freezer and fridge and in 24 hours there was not a hint of stink.

KRUPS and HEINEKEN B100 BeerTender with Heineken Draught Keg technology,Black

KRUPS and HEINEKEN B100 BeerTender with Heineken Draught Keg technology,Black
  • Maintains beer at the ideal temperature of 37.4 degrees F
  • Engineered to work exclusively with Heineken, Heineken Premium Light and Newcastle Brown Ale
  • Ultra quiet and efficient Peltier cooling system provides constant and consistent cooling of the keg
  • DraughtKeg and Beertender keep beer fresh for 30 days after tapping
  • Unit measures 21-Inch L by 12-Inch W by 18-Inch H; Comes with 5 draught tubes

I purchased this unit on sale at Best Buy for $79.99. I was very skeptical about the quality for the price, but with the big game next weekend I could not resist.

I stopped by BevMo on my way home. This unit ONLY uses Beertender compatible kegs. So far, only Heinekin, Heinekin Light, and New Castle are available for this machine. If you don't like any of those beers, skip it.

Luckily, BevMo had the Heinekin and New Castle minikegs in stock, but it was not cold.

I brought it all home and started to set it up. It was VERY SIMPLE. The directions are all illustrated with written directions a couple pages later.

Things I did not know before set up:

1) It takes special "BeerTender Tubes". I did not know about these until I started setting it up. I looks like you can only use them one time. There were 6 included with purchase. It looks like replacements are available on Amazon for $9 for 6 tubes.

2) You must insert a COLD KEG into the machine. If it is not already the correct temp, you need to chill in the fridge for 10 hours or in the BeerTender for 18 hours before you can use it. There are two small green lights on the top: one to tell you it is on and the other to tell you the beer is cold enough to pour. Luckily, there is a store close by that sells the Heinekin minikegs already chilled, so I ran out and got one so I could try the machine out right away.

So far so good. Everything worked great, the lights came on and it poured beautifully.

I think that this is an excellent addition to my kitchen. It fits perfect on the kitchen counter. Does not take up too much room and it will be a great addition to summer BBQ's.

Although it is a tad annoying, this product is worth buying your honey for father's day or his birthday because I will tell you that the guys just down right love having cold beer on tap, and you can fit this little unit in just about any room. Now that I have figured out where to get the kegs (and to look for when they go on sale), and that you have to make sure to buy tap lines in advance, it is less of a bother than it seemed at first. You need to know that you have to buy special plastic disposable tap lines for every keg (not as green as I would like, although my brother figured out how to reuse them more than once) that are pricey, there is only three beers you can buy to put in it (Heineken and Heineken Light, and New Castle Brown), and if you buy or store the kegs warm it takes a long time to cool down. Once it is cold you are set though, and there is an indicator to show how cold and how full the keg is. I had one horrible experience trying to change the keg, alone where no one could hear me, when for some reason the tap failed and a geyser of beer shot straight up into my face, all over the wall and floor at high velocity. I managed to push the tap partially back into the keg, just enough to divert the geyser so that it soaked my clothes as I dragged the whole unit out into the yard. That was not so great, although the dog found it hysterically funny.

This is a quality piece of equipment that exceeds expectations for a $99 unit. It appears identical to the T-Fal unit but bears the Krupps label. The system uses Peltier cooling which is not as robust as refrigerant but draws far less power. As a result it takes 18 hours to cool a 5 litre container of beer from room temperature. Pre-cooling in your refrigerator obviates this issue. This is not an inexpensive way to drink beer, but it is fun and delivers the appropriate amount of carbonation. Hopefully more beer producers will offer the 5 litre kegs in future.

Great product! Takes a while to get cold but so worth it in the end. Also just to clarify, there is no LCD on this model. Just a light indicator that it is 1) on and 2) at the right temperature.

I was given this item as a Christmas gift and really enjoyed it for awhile, about 15 months to be exact. I switched out the keg and it stopped cooling. I pulled the keg out and turned it off for a few hours. I turned the unit on and not only did it not cool, but it cycled a few times then shut down completely. I called Krups and was told I was out of warranty. I didn't think too much of it until my brother, who was given the same gift, had the same problem a few weeks later. Then, my father's did the same thing shortly after that. All of us called Krups with no assistance. 3 units failing the same way is no longer coincidenceit's a defect. If you really want a Beertender, I would highly recommend staying away from Krups.

Danby DAR125SLDD 4.4 cu.ft. All Refrigerator - Spotless Steel

Danby DAR125SLDD 4.4 cu.ft. All Refrigerator - Spotless Steel
  • 4.4 cu. ft. (124.6 litre) capacity compact refrigerator
  • Scratch resistant work-top is a great place to store
  • 2 full shelves and 1 half shelf for maximum storage versatility; Crisper with glass top
  • Automatic defrost, Mechanical thermostat
  • Interior light

I bought this fridge short notice when a defrosting attempt rendered my last beer fridge inoperable, and I felt a little pressured to hit the Go button on it as my tasty 12oz's of Heaven slowly warmed. But I must say I'm not disappointed at all! It's a great size, looks fantastic, isn't as heavy as I thought it would be, is very quiet, and keeps more than 60 bottles of Sam Adams ice cold and within arms reach with room to spare! My original fridge was a Kenmore job, with a pathetic waste-of-space freezer section (which this does not have) that for some unknown reason Sears saw fit to make the freezer floor out of the cooling element. So of course it iced up like you read about, and I, like many a man before me, took the task of removing this ice seriously (it was encroaching on my beer space as it grew!)...and pulled out my trusty, and ridiculously pointy, pocket knife. So after a bath of freon, or what ever the hell they're using these days to cool, washed over me with a snake-like hiss, I proceeded to slam the door and muscle the fridge out to the driveway where it still sits. Luckily my beer supply was low (it pains me to admit this), so I only needed to commandeer a single shelf in the practically useless "food" fridge as the wife calls it. But knowing this arrangement wouldn't last, I needed a new fridge, and fast. So I bit the bullet after reading a few whiny reviews about ridiculously trivial issues (like not getting cool enough, or damaged in shipping; neither of which plague(d) my unit), even springing for the $4 overnight option (Thank you PRIME!), and couldn't be happier. My pregnant wife likes it so much she's decided to throw caution to the wind and resume drinking. Who could resist pulling a frosty beverage from this bad boy and tossing it back at the end of a hard day? Not this guy! And this fridge delivers with style. Only thing I can think of as a drawback is it doesn't keep the ice frozen, but then, giving up room in it for ice when it could be holding more beer is just ludicrous. This scenario actually makes me shudder to consider.

Summary? Kick-ass fridge for the money and if you have Prime, pay the $4 to overnight it just so you can tell your friends you overnighted a FRIDGE for FOUR FREAKING DOLLARS. Then slam back a cold one for emphasis.

We purchased this refrigerator for our outside entertainment bar because of its size and energy efficiency rating. So far we are very satisfied. It is a quiet and maintains internal temperature keeping everything nice and cold. There are plenty of shelving options as they are all adjustable. The door has 10 can holder slots for beer or soda and also has adjustable shelves for bottles of soda or wine. There is a drawer on the bottom perfect for storing garnishes, cheeses or meats. There is plenty of room in the rest of the fridge to fill as you please. The door really is spot resistent, we are not constantly cleaning it! This was a great purchase; we highly recommend this item.

I had my Danby less than 24 hours before the problems started. I had the thermostat set at slightly more than half (probably 6/10) for the first night it was in use. The next day, I discovered that all of my 6 (expensive!) bottled beers on the bottom shelf (above crisper drawer) had frozen, and 3 of them had burst causing beer to go everywhere! Checked the rest of the beverages in the fridge to see if they were also close to bursting, but found those in the middle & top shelves not even beginning to freeze.

After this fiasco, I set the thermostat to about a third of the way up (probably 3/10) so as not to have a repeat incident. After another 6 hours, the stuff on the bottom did not freeze, but was very cold (great!). However, the items on the top shelf were barely even cool to the touch (not great). I proceeded to do a little test with a refrigeration thermometer leaving the thermostat at about one-third. After 30 minutes, the bottom shelf read 37 degrees. I moved it to the top shelf and waited another 30 minutes, and found it showing 54 degrees! A 17 degree difference between top and bottom!!! Not to mention that 37 degrees is WAY too cold especially when the thermostat dial is set so low.

So it seems that I am experiencing the same inconsistent cooling that at least 2 other reviewers are having. Amazon was great about setting up a replacement delivery & pickup. I am willing to try a replacement before calling this fridge a total failure. The replacement is set to arrive tomorrow, so I'll post an update in a few days. Wish me luck!

UPDATE: Received a replacement, and it had the same EXACT issue!!! Started it off with the thermostat at the midway point (most manufacturers recommend this setting), and placed identical thermometers on the top and bottom shelves. After one hour, the top read 55 degrees, and the bottom was at 30!!!! I am willing to accept a few degrees difference, maybe even as much as 6 or 7 tops, but 15 degrees is ridiculous. I would have to accept the top being at nearly 60 just to keep the lower half above freezing. Am sending this one back also (UPS is gonna hate me tomorrow), and am getting the Haier 4.5cu ft one instead. Fingers crossed...

I bought this fridge to make my own mini-kegerator. There are plans on a few sites on the web for this model. After modding, I can fit two 5-gallon kegs, and a C02 tank tight in there. The fridge came as expected, and looks pretty nice. The temp control isn't anything fancy, but not sure what you'd expect on a less expensive mini-fridge.

If you do decide to mod it, you must take care not to hit a coolant line!

Also, I used the cheap overnight shipping option on this using my amazon prime. So worth it. I've read other people may have had problems with shipping damage using ground shipping, but that was not the case for me.

At first I liked the wine cooler with it's dual temp control, however the lower cooler went out on me. The display LCD read "Er" and when you went to the troubleshoot section on the manual, it stated that it was an error code, however it did not state how to clear or fix it. Thankfully I had 1 more month before my 1yr warranty would have expired. Don't know if I can recommend this product based on this experience.

I love this unit, at the time of the purchase I liked it because the lower part is for the reds and I was drinking more reds. Love the dual zone, the light is great to find what you want before opening the door, great piece in any room. It does run alot or all the time, it sounds like a computer fan so it is not loud to the point of being a problem I have mine in the dining room and has never been an issue, most days we do not even notice it running. Bought March 2010

Update 4/27/11 the upper cooler keeps kicking in and out and not keeping temp anymore. The bottom is still working for now just waiting for that one to stop.

White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer

White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream FreezerDon't let the high price on this ice cream freezer fool you into thinking you're getting something that's high quality. We ordered one in late November, anticipating lots of fun "cranking" together at family get-togethers over the holidays. The "trial run" in early December went fine. But the second time we got the freezer out of the box -on Christmas evening -we saw that metal filings had shifted out of the crank mechanism. Then, as we attempted to make just our second batch of ice cream, the crank handle broke. (The crank mechanism seems to be poorly made, which overly stresses the crank handle.) Not what we expected from a $159 ice cream freezer.

If you are looking for an old fashioned hand crack ice cream maker that uses salt and ice this is the only choice I have been able to find. Unfortunately, I was only able to make ice cream about 5 times before I noticed the gears were stripping. I then took a closer look at the hand crank system and it is made very cheaply. Additionally, even though I have been diligent about rinsing out the bucket when I am done, it is still rusting on the inside. This is presumedly from the salt water needed to freeze the ice cream. Still, since I very much like hand cranking, I am now looking for a replacement piece for the hand crank system and hoping it will last more than a season.

The good news is that you can still buy an old fashioned ice cream maker. The bad news is that no one has come out with one that is made to last.

My suggestion is to look at garage sales for one built years ago when they were built to last generations. If you don't find one, then this will do.

Update 2010: I never found a way to replace the handle so we now have a very expensive wooden bucket. Since more recent reviews say that the gears are still stripping, I would stay away from this product.

Buy White Mountain F64306-X 6-Quart Hand-Crank Ice Cream Freezer Now

Two years ago, I purchased this hand-crank ice cream freezer for $130 on the web. My wife and I loved the idea of kids taking turns cranking the handle.

But the very first time we made ice cream, we found that the crank would jam incessantly. If I pressed in on the handle in a certain way while cranking, the jamming was reduced a bit, but this was a nuisance. If one did not apply force in just the right way, the thing would jam again. (So much for friends and kids enjoying taking turns at the crank!)

The second time we made ice cream, the jamming was even worse, and we noticed that metal filings were dropping down from the gear mechanism and were making their way into the ice cream.

When I took the gear mechanism (the "crank assembly frame") apart, I discovered the problem: The gears inside are designed and manufactured badly. The gears are not held in place, but rather have about 1/8" play. That is a lot of play. When the gears drift apart, they jam. The gears in our unit were badly gouged after only two uses! (The gears seem to be stamped from low-grade powdered metal.) The entire problem could have been avoided in the manufacturing by simply using a plastic spacer on the shaft that holds one of the gears, but this was not done.

When I called about warranty service, I was told that a replacement gear mechanism would be shipped to me. That never happened. The next time I called, some months later, I was told that there was no record of my earlier call. Again, I was told that a replacement gear mechanism would be shipped to me. About a week later, a replacement handle arrived, not a gear mechanism.

The third time I called about warranty service, I was informed that gear mechanism is not actually a replacement part, so that I should never have been told that one could be sent to me. (This is rather baffling: one can buy the part on the web.) I was also informed that the unit was out of its one year warranty. It did not seem to matter to them that my problems with the unit, and my contacts with them, had begun while the unit was only a few months old. Only when I assured them that I was holding in my hand a printed 5-year warranty did they continue to work with me. (Of course the company is fully aware of their flawed product, and of course they are fully aware that the product has been sold with a 5-year warranty. It seems that they try to bluff people who call for warranty service, hoping that they might not have a copy of thier warranty in-hand.)

The result of this third call about warranty service was that the company agreed to replace my ice cream maker under warranty. But I was required to pay for shipping of my old unit back to them via UPS (an expense of $20) and for shipping of the replacement unit to me (an expense of $10). So the cost of my ice cream maker is up to $160. Luckily, they don't have any of the hand-crank models available to send out as a replacement, and so they are going to ship me an electric model instead. I'm hoping the electric one will be a better design it does not have the gear mechanism that the hand-crank model has. But I certainly would not have paid $160 for an electric ice cream maker. My recommendation would be to buy a much cheaper electric ice cream maker of a more modern design from another company.

When I asked for an ice cream freezer as a gift, my husband suggested a modern style, but I assured him I wanted a "good, old-fashioned" hand-crank style. I wanted the quality of century-old manufacturing that uses elbow grease instead of electronics--that can be difficult or impossible to repair--and I also wanted the nostalgic satisfaction of working for my treat.

The quality of this product is shameful; there is no part of it that is not as cheaply produced as it possibly can be. The dyes in the wood bucket leak out; the rings around the bucket began rusting after the first use; the bucket leaks; grease and particles from the crank mechanism collect at the top of the paddle; the wood on the paddles are "hairy" with splinters; the paddle scrapes the sides of the canister, introducing particles into the ice cream (can be adjusted, but didn't realize it was mis-adjusted until the damage was already done); the metal parts of the paddle structure either rust or corrode, depending on the metal; the entire crank mechanism rusts excessively, regardless of how carefully we store it, wiped down with vegetable oil; and finally, the worst of all, the mechanism doesn't work properly. Every 3d or 4th turn of the handle, it seizes up and and has to be turned backwards to loosen it. That is UNBELIEVABLY frustrating.

A logical question would be whether we contributed to these problems with poor care, but all parts were washed and dried by hand, metal parts were put in a low-temp. oven to ensure dryness before storing, and we followed all the directions explicitly. No amount of care or maintenance could save this piece of, well, trash (literally, since after 2 years of struggling with it, I'm throwing it out today).

To my huge irritation, we could not return it because the return date was past before we realized just how bad the problems were. When I contacted the company, they were completely dismissive of my complaints, suggesting that I wasn't using the freezer correctly (I've hand cranked ice cream since I was a kid!). Also, they did not even acknowledge my request for a replacement.

The freezer works OK but the overall quality of the product appears to have slipped. The finish on the wood was poor and the lid for the stainless steel container does not fit tight enough. I do not expect this new White Mountain freezer to last as long as the one my Grandparent's purchased and used for 50+ years. For the money, I expected more.

GE WR30X10097 Icemaker Assembly for Refrigerator

GE WR30X10097 Icemaker Assembly for RefrigeratorLikewise I also waited nearly a year before buying this ice maker . I did all the troubleshooting myself to verify that this was the problem. Found other websites selling this product for nearly double and just didn't want to spend the money. When I saw it for $126 it was too good to pass up. Same manufacturer and model as the original (Samsung). Just plugged it in and a couple hours later it is making ice.

I finally caved and bought this product as a replacement for our icemaker that broke over a year ago. I was hesitant because the icemaker that came with our GE Profile refrigerator was not durable at all especially given that the fridge was only 3 yrs old when the plastic ice level indicator arm broke off and eventually the unit stopped making ice. I am pleased to say that the replacement icemaker is working great! It doesn't seem nearly as noisy as the original one and makes ice at an acceptable rate.

Not a lot to say about it. It arrived quickly, and once installed it started to make ice. That's all I was expecting, so I'm very pleased with this product.

Our old ice maker was making a clicking noise everytime it tried to dislodge the ice because the ice couldn't get pushed out by the fingers and the gears were just getting stripped. I ordered this part hoping to be the correct replacement part for a samsung model IMC701. It was the perfect match! Freezer is making buckets of ice and I'm back in margaritaville.

I was happy to find this part for my frig. I was afraid I would have to buy a new one, but the part worked.

After a refrigerator repair man came to my home and charged me $300 to replace a part in my refrigerator that did not need replacing (he refused to give me back any of my money), I decided to go at it myself. I'm a single mother and have never done anything like this before, but since here in Tennesse refrigerator repair people do not need to be certified I figured I could do it. I watched a youtube video on how to install the part first, then I ordered (under $20.00 vs $85 that the repair man said he'd charge for the part and it was delivered very fast too), and installed it. It's been about a month and it's working like a charm. I'd recommend ordering parts from here to anybody.

AVANTI 12 BOTTLE WINE COOLER

AVANTI 12 BOTTLE WINE COOLER
  • Stores up to 12 Wine Bottles
  • Innovative Design Allows the Standing or Vertical Storage of up to 4 Open Bottles
  • No Vibration - Bottle Sediment is not Disturbed
  • Curved Glass Door for a Modern and Sylish Look
  • Classic Black Cabinet with Platinum Finished Accents Compliment Any Decor

I've had this wine cooler for a couple of months now. Overall, it does the job it was intended to do. I keep both red and white wines in it, by keeping the temperature at 56F. That's borderline low for red, and borderline high for white, so it's not perfect. But, I was prepared for that because it is a single-zone cooler after all.

My wife and I don't drink that much wine (2 bottles a week, more if we have guests over). I had planned to purchase a second unit, so that we'd have one for red wines, and a separate one for white wines. But, we're happy with the borderline temperature setting so far.

The spacing of the metal racks is barely sufficient for regular-size bottles. We have problems with any wine bottles that are wider or taller than usual, even if they are 750 ml. We end up having to use the space with no racks in order to stack wide bottles directly on top of each other. We can't place any of the longer-necked bottles (some white wines are like that).

My biggest complaint is the fan. It's a lot noisier than I thought, and it seems to cycle on and off very frequently (much noisier and more frequent than our ref). When the house is quiet, it can be disturbing. I have no idea if this cycling will reduce the lifespan of the product.

This cooler is okay. It does the job. It's attractive, quiet, inexpensive, with easy to operate controls. The only problem: setting the display at 60 degrees yields a temperature of 66 degrees. No big deal, just allow for the 6 degree differential at all degree settings. Also being able to place 4 bottles vertical is a nice feature.

The only thing missing is a two zone capability to keep whites and reds at different temps. At the low price I paid guess I could buy another one.

Want AVANTI 12 BOTTLE WINE COOLER Discount?

After doing ALOT of research on wine coolers in all price ranges, I finally chose this one because of the ability to store opened wines upright. This was one of the few in all price ranges that had this feature and its a GREAT feature, and its eye appealing. I have had the cooler for a week now. I drink mostly white, some red wines, and I buy a variety of wines, mostly from grocery stores and some wine places, so the bottles are always different and different sizes. I have 12 different bottles of wine in there right now and they all fit just fine. Obviously you can't get a supersized bottle of wine in there. As for the sound everyone complains about, it is not bad, I have it in my kitchen and when it runs (it doesn't run all the time) I can hear it, but its not any different than the fridge running. I guess keep that in mind if you want it in your living room. The only downfall is the display light, it looks GREAT when its on, but it has a default shut off after 10 minutes. It would be nice if it could stay on longer than that, and its not something you can adjust. The convexity of the front glass and the digital read is very classy and I absolutely love this unit! I keep mine at 50* for my white wines, and it works great. I put this unit underneath a counter, but you have to make sure you have ample room on each side and above for it to vent. It does put out some heat when it runs. I have 4-5 inches on each side, including in the back. I would not recommend for a tightly enclosed space.

The Avanti is a replacement cooler. So far so good. It seems to maintain temps very well and it's an attractive unit. The temperature control and display are on the front and easy to read.

I wouldn't recommend this cooler if noise is an issue. It's a bit noisey when the motor is running. For me that's not a problem bacause it's in a side room. Otherwise I'm pleased with this cooler.
