Water Sentinel WSS-1 Refrigerator Replacement Filter, 2-Pack

After reading the reviews for this product and the equivalent Aqua-Pure product, I decided to buy one of each and do a side by side comparison. The first thing I noticed was that the Water Sentinel is made in USA, while the Aqua-Pure is made in Mexico. The Water Sentinel appears to be better constructed and heftier. It also includes 0-ring lubricant, which makes installation MUCH easier. After flushing a gallon of water through each, the taste test was pretty much the same, the Water Sentinel maybe a bit better. Considering that the Water Sentinel is about half the price (and did I mention MADE in USA), it certainly seems like a no-brainer.

I purchased these to replace the OEM filters that I have been spending $45 a piece on at Lowes. Everything I read about these filters indicated longer life and obviously a MUCH better value from a cost perspective. They were well packaged and fit perfectly. The only thing is a slightly 'off' plastic taste. As I do with OEM filters I flushed several gallons through the filter before using any of the water. Still, there was this persistent bitter plastic taste. After running several more gallons through it the taste began to diminish and has become less noticeable over time. I have used dozens of filter / softener technologies over the last 20 years and this is the first time I have had this taste perception issue. I willl have to see what the next filter is like in several months to determine if I will purchase again.

+++++ 7/14 update: The first of the three filters is about due for a replacement. This really isn't any longer than the OEM Samsung filter. However, we did have an extra person in our household for many months of it's life so it may have given an extra 10-20%. Other than that there is nothing else to report, the water was fine after cycling an extra couple of gallons out of it at start-up with no other taste perception issues.

The WSS-1 is not equivalent to the manufacturer's recommended filter. I noticed that the description didn't mention removal of harmful contaminants (ANSI 53), so I emailed Water Sentinel. Getting no reply to my email, I phoned their customer service and they confirmed that the filter DOES NOT meet ANSI 53 for removal of harmful contaminants.

My refrigerator is a Samsung RFG298AARS. The owner's manual specifies a Samsung model DA29-00003G filter, which is certified to meet both ANSI 42 (aesthetic effects, such as chlorine taste), and ANSI 53 (health effects, such as cysts, lead, benzene, asbestos, mercury). If you buy the WSS-1 you are buying a cartridge that is certified only to make water taste better, not to make it safer.

Water Sentinels own product literature states: "This filter (WSS-1) should not be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality, without adequate disinfection before and or after the filter. This filter has been tested by the manufacturer against ANSI/NSF Standard 42 for the reduction of Chlorine, Tastes and Odors."

Conclusion: I strongly recommend buying a filter that meets both ANSI 42 and ANSI 53 certifications and the manufacturer's specs, such as the DA29-00003G or an equivalent product. The Water Sentinel WSS-1 does NOT meet both standards. Water Sentinel's own literature warns against using the filter if your water is "microbiologically unsafe," putting the onus of safety assurance on the consumer. If you knew it was always safe, you wouldn't need a filter. I bought the DA29-0003G, I have owned several now with no problems. It costs a bit more, but does what I expect a filter to do--make the water safer while also making it taste good. (If a comparable product comes along with a lower cost, and the same certifications, I will consider it.)

If you're water dispenser is leaking at the door, it is usually because you have air in the water line. Make sure you soak the filter to remove any loose charcoal before installing a new filter. Keep the filter upright and full of water when installing and then run a gallon or so of water through the dispenser to remove any air from the lines. If you still have a leak at the dispenser, make sure the water line on the back of the fridge is tight.

Samsung is rated at 500 gallons or 6 months; this one is rated at 300 gallons or 6 months. Go figure.

Price is about 40% less than Samsung (200 gallons less = 40% less so you get what you pay for).

I typically use this product for up to a year and taste is still pure, not even chlorine taste.

Ok now but plastic taste to water for a couple of weeks when first installed. Possibly pre-soaking filter first may help.

Yes this item fixed our refrigerator problem. Do not be misled about how difficult it can be to remove the old one and install the new one. Whirlpool did a good job engineering the parts to force the customer to use over priced local service technicians to complete the repair. It could/should have been much easier and less expensive. For this to happen to a fairly new refrigerator says something about Whirlpool quality not very good.

We purchased this Maytag bottom freezer refrigerator at a local big box home improvement store two years ago. I love the style and the convenience of the bottom freezer compared to my old side by side. Two years ago the price was reasonable at $900. We purchased a Maytag refrigerator in July of 2012. It quit working in October. Maytag repairman did not have the replacement compressor that was needed. Home Depot brought us another refrigerator 10 days later. That refrigerator worked until the beginning of May 2013 (7 months later). Home Depot brought us another refrigerator 7 days later. We contacted Maytag after we received the new refrigerator and they were not willing to send us any compensation for aggravation or loss of food. Their customer service to say the least is non-responsive. We will never buy another Maytag refrigerator and we tell everyone we know not buy a Maytag refrigerator. Maytag had to know these refrigerators were defective and they should have recalled them. Home Depot Appliance manager told us there were multiple customers who had issues with these refrigerators.

There are many manufactures of appliances and our advice would be not to buy maytag!

Doesn't work. I take that back, the lights come on and the motor runs constantly but it doesn't get cold. Isn't that the reason you buy a refridgerator? Coldness? Called Maytag and got a recording, but no call back. Do not buy this product.

Whirlpool 2198202 Thermostat for Refrigerator

The primary reason I bought this item from this vendor was that was advertised as a Whirlpool part SEVEN times in the ad: "Whirlpool 2198282 Thermostat for Refrigerator by Whirlpool", repeated this two more times, and then said "Genuine Whirlpool Replacement Part".

In fact, the package in which it came says, "ERP exact replacement parts, ER 2198282 Cold Control".

My refrigerator was 48 degrees, I had to do something, so I carefully installed this ERP part following a step by step video found elsewhere on the net. I set the control on 3, the mid way point and was pleased that it cooled quickly.

BUT, it went down, down to below 32 degrees. So, I turned the control down ... down ... down. The control is now at its warmest setting, 1, and the temp still remains at 32 or colder (this over a couple of days).

I'm going to try to get my money back from Amazon. BEWARE.

It took 5 minutes to install. You tube has a video that shows all the steps needed to install the part.

About this item: The part received matched the original perfectly. No delivery problems. Functions just as it should, as far as I can tell. Packaging was a little casual, luckily it is not a fragile item.

To other handy-persons wondering if they should replace their fridge's thermostat: We have an older fridge that was cycling on and off erratically. Symptoms could be temporarily relieved by tapping directly on the thermostat housing. Seemed likely that the thermostat was problematic. On replacing the thermostat the erratic cycling was cured but I was surprised to find that other odd behaviors such as compressor-motor noise and excessively long running times have also been cured. Who knew thermostats affected all that (not me!).

Thought this was the bad part because the fridge would just shut down, unless you knocked it right where this is located. After having it happen one night and ruining a lot of food I looked up the part on an appliance parts web site. I decided to plug the part # into Amazon and see what happened. There it was for less and FREE shipping. I ordered it and it arrived on time, packed safely cushioned in its box.Unplug the fridge and remove the shroud housing the old one it making sure to keep track of the screw. Make note of the position of everything then replace exactly with the new one. I Put everything back and two months later not one shut down, everything works great. Very happy with part, order process and price.

I got a really great price on this item. It came in just a few days and was really easy to install. If you can use a screwdriver and know how to unplug the fridge then you are good...

If your fridge is making a errrrr noise (almost like a loud hum). It is the bearings in the fan motor going out. This affordable part will fix it and ordering it will save you hundreds over a professional.

Also the way I diagnosed it was to take the back of the freezer out. If you take out those two screws and slide the brackets UP that hold the freezer shelf, the back panel just slides UP also.

Spin the blade a little by hand and it will probably work for a little while. I left it that way with all of my food in there and just got the blade spinning each time it made the humming sound, until my evap motor came in.

Fixed good as new now!

Sis went down to our elderly parents basement and was alarmed by the noise the old kenmore fridge in the basement was making and unplugged it because she was afraid of it catching fire. On checking I found that the evaporator fan, in the back of the freezer had bad bearings and was screeching loudly. A replacement fan from the local appliance repair shop was almost $70.Parents did not want to spend big money on an old refrigerator, and they were going to replace it. Found this on amazon and thought why not? Had to do some trimming of the mounting bracket but it works just fine and is very quiet. The old Kenmore cools like new now. If you are buying this I recommend you also check the coil fan, usually located at the bottom of the refrigerator. Be sure that it is free to rotate and blow air over the coils in order for the refrigerator to cool well. Put a drop or two of turbine oil on the shaft where it goes into the motor housing once a year or so to keep it that way. You can buy this stuff locally at your local appliance shop or here on amazon at SEPTLS43479704 Zoom Spout Oilers I am not affiliate with Amazon, and not an appliance repair professional. Order took three business days to ship. USPS delivered in 36 hours from Lancaster PA to Minnetrista MN...very good. Package from USPS (Priority Mail) was undamaged, but internal contents (in box) were not packed for shipment (zero packing) so motor/bracket was bent 90 degrees and penetrating box while all other parts had been ripped from their bags...hope all aren't shipped this way. Being a universal fit made straightening/repair OK, but in addition, motor ran in wrong direction, so had to be disassembled. Had this for about a month now. It works. Flow was amazing compared to the one it replaced, but that's probably because the filter was long overdue for a replacement. No problems as far as I am aware. Water tastes fine, I'd more than likely buy another one when needed.

I drink sping water but cook with filtered water, hence gave this affordable replacement filter to my Amana refrigerator a shot. It is made in China and looks kind of cheap but my water doesn't have the nasty tap metallic flavor any longer. I guess this is an okay alternative, but you might want to pay a little more and go for a "top-of-the-line" option if you are planning to drink the water filtered with it.

Good looking, and I like the wire shelves. They left a larger open space at the bottom, which is good for larger bottles of wine. We included this as part of a kitchen remodel, and unfortunately ended up with a damaged cabinet from condensation. We were running the unit at 45*, which is apparently too cold?? Granted, we are in South Florida, so perhaps a 78* home, and being built in, was just too much for it? We're running it at 60* now, and have had no additional problems. Just be aware, and test yours at lower temps.

Looks nice in the picture but the actual unit has poorly finished edges. The shelves are so tight that they will barely fit the bottles. Lots of scraping to get the full 32 bottles in. The shelves are cheap wire shelves that have the risk of falling out if you're not careful, as the stopper often breaks.

All those issue are not deal breakers but the temperature fluctuations are tough to accept. I measured the actual temps in the unit and you can expect up to a 6 degree difference from that the display shows. Very very bad if you have expensive collectibles that go in long term. Not please at all with how this worked out.

The unit worked for seven weeks, and then shut down. We checked the outlet--which is fine--so it didn't blow the circuit and there's no issue with the power being supplied to the unit. We tried unplugging it, leaving it unplugged, and then plugging it back in. The digital display lights up for a split second, and then it goes black. To Amazon's credit, they dispatched UPS for pickup and will be issuing a free refund. Of course, now we have a large hole in our cabinet...and have to find a different brand to purchase. Although the build quality was good, and when it worked it worked well, I don't think we'll be taking a chance with SPT again.

Subsequent note: while awaiting Amazon's shipping label to return, the unit turned on again. I still am at a loss to explain why it was dead for a week and then suddenly began working. In all my years of dealing with electronics (on a high level), I've never seen anything like this. Draw your own conclusions as to whether or not you want to buy an SPT product, but I certainly would have hesitation.

Nothing to write home about. The package and item description says 32 bottles but there are only 28 places on the wire racks for bottles, I guess you are supposed to double stack the other 4 bottles somewhere. Unit came well packaged with no damage visible. I let it set upright for 4 hours as per the instructions before energizing and have had no problems after 5 days running. Its set at 40 deg F and seems to hold it ok when checked with a known good thermometer. Is slightly noisier than I expected for the size of the unit but is not objectionable. You can hear it but no louder than any other fridge. The light is not switched with the door, you have to manually turn it on and off. To do this you have to unlock the controls which automatically lock after 12 seconds.

We bought a house with a 15" trash compactor we never used. This is the perfect appliance for that spot. No further cutting/remodeling required just slid compactor out and this in. Keeps wine stated temperature. Runs quietly (can occassionally hear it if nothing else is on in the house but then only a quiet hum). Would be 5 star if it had 2 zones (white and red), but I couldn't find that in this size for this price.
