Water Sentinel WSS-1 Refrigerator Replacement Filter, 2-Pack

Water Sentinel WSS-1 Refrigerator Replacement Filter, 2-PackAfter reading the reviews for this product and the equivalent Aqua-Pure product, I decided to buy one of each and do a side by side comparison. The first thing I noticed was that the Water Sentinel is made in USA, while the Aqua-Pure is made in Mexico. The Water Sentinel appears to be better constructed and heftier. It also includes 0-ring lubricant, which makes installation MUCH easier. After flushing a gallon of water through each, the taste test was pretty much the same, the Water Sentinel maybe a bit better. Considering that the Water Sentinel is about half the price (and did I mention MADE in USA), it certainly seems like a no-brainer.

I purchased these to replace the OEM filters that I have been spending $45 a piece on at Lowes. Everything I read about these filters indicated longer life and obviously a MUCH better value from a cost perspective. They were well packaged and fit perfectly. The only thing is a slightly 'off' plastic taste. As I do with OEM filters I flushed several gallons through the filter before using any of the water. Still, there was this persistent bitter plastic taste. After running several more gallons through it the taste began to diminish and has become less noticeable over time. I have used dozens of filter / softener technologies over the last 20 years and this is the first time I have had this taste perception issue. I willl have to see what the next filter is like in several months to determine if I will purchase again.

+++++ 7/14 update: The first of the three filters is about due for a replacement. This really isn't any longer than the OEM Samsung filter. However, we did have an extra person in our household for many months of it's life so it may have given an extra 10-20%. Other than that there is nothing else to report, the water was fine after cycling an extra couple of gallons out of it at start-up with no other taste perception issues.

The WSS-1 is not equivalent to the manufacturer's recommended filter. I noticed that the description didn't mention removal of harmful contaminants (ANSI 53), so I emailed Water Sentinel. Getting no reply to my email, I phoned their customer service and they confirmed that the filter DOES NOT meet ANSI 53 for removal of harmful contaminants.

My refrigerator is a Samsung RFG298AARS. The owner's manual specifies a Samsung model DA29-00003G filter, which is certified to meet both ANSI 42 (aesthetic effects, such as chlorine taste), and ANSI 53 (health effects, such as cysts, lead, benzene, asbestos, mercury). If you buy the WSS-1 you are buying a cartridge that is certified only to make water taste better, not to make it safer.

Water Sentinels own product literature states: "This filter (WSS-1) should not be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality, without adequate disinfection before and or after the filter. This filter has been tested by the manufacturer against ANSI/NSF Standard 42 for the reduction of Chlorine, Tastes and Odors."

--

NSF/ANSI Standard 42: Drinking Water Treatment Units Aesthetic Effects. Designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-related contaminants (chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates) that may be present in public or private drinking water.

NSF/ANSI Standard 53: Drinking Water Treatment Units Health Effects. Designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), that may be present in public or private drinking water.

--

Conclusion: I strongly recommend buying a filter that meets both ANSI 42 and ANSI 53 certifications and the manufacturer's specs, such as the DA29-00003G or an equivalent product. The Water Sentinel WSS-1 does NOT meet both standards. Water Sentinel's own literature warns against using the filter if your water is "microbiologically unsafe," putting the onus of safety assurance on the consumer. If you knew it was always safe, you wouldn't need a filter. I bought the DA29-0003G, I have owned several now with no problems. It costs a bit more, but does what I expect a filter to do--make the water safer while also making it taste good. (If a comparable product comes along with a lower cost, and the same certifications, I will consider it.)

If you're water dispenser is leaking at the door, it is usually because you have air in the water line. Make sure you soak the filter to remove any loose charcoal before installing a new filter. Keep the filter upright and full of water when installing and then run a gallon or so of water through the dispenser to remove any air from the lines. If you still have a leak at the dispenser, make sure the water line on the back of the fridge is tight.

Samsung is rated at 500 gallons or 6 months; this one is rated at 300 gallons or 6 months. Go figure.

Price is about 40% less than Samsung (200 gallons less = 40% less so you get what you pay for).

I typically use this product for up to a year and taste is still pure, not even chlorine taste.

Previous reviewer who said it tastes like pee must have his water hooked up to his toilet.

Water Sentinel WSW-2 Replacement Refrigerator Ice and Water Filter, 4-Pack

Water Sentinel WSW-2 Replacement Refrigerator Ice and Water Filter, 4-PackDescription leads one to believe these are higher-end filters and they're not. These are about $22.50 ea when you buy the 4. You can buy a single one here on Amazon at $16.35. They're sub-par and do not meet standard 53 which is the reduction of Lead, Mercury, Benzene, p-dichlorobenzene,Toxaphene and Carbofuran.

What does tested for standard 42 and 53 mean anyway? It does not say it passed the test. That's like saying we tested chicken for salmonella and not saying whether any was found.

Really disappointed with Amazon for allowing deceptive vendor marketing. I thought I did not have to be a lawyer buy a water filter: "Whirlpool Refrigerator Filter" is not a "Whirlpool Filter". Yeah, I know my fault but, they should say "Water Sentinel Filter for Whirlpool refrigerator" if they want my business. I guess they're counting on people not having enough time to read the lat detail and spend two hours before ordering a water filter and then, not sending the items back cause it takes even more time. Well, these are going back and Amazon will be getting less of my money and business going forward.

This is health related item but I guess the mighty dollar comes first.

I'm a big Amazon fan but lately, some of the vendors they have are making me think twice before I blindly order from Amazon with a few clicks on my cell phone like I normally do. Losing faith in Amazon fast.

Got tired of spending $40 for 1 filter every 6 months, so I bought this 4-pack for less than $100. Will definitely come back in 2 years to order more. Great deal!!

This is the best price (w/ shipping) I found on Whirlpool replacement fridge filters. The shipping was quick and the filters were well packed. They sent only 2 filters initially due to an error, but when I contacted the seller, she was quick to admit the error and act on it. The rest of the order came faster then I anticipated. I hope to come back for more in 2 years.

Great price. Shipping was fast. Install was a breeze. Water is as goos as the many poland springs cases I was buying every month. Good investment I think.

Since the WSW-2 is the same as WSW-1 (NSF Standard 42) it is not an equivalent replacement for The factory original Whirlpool Filter (4396510) which is NSF Standard 53 for the reduction of cysts, lead, mercury and other chemicals.

The refridgerator we own requires this filter. The price was a deciding factor as they are pricey. We were very pleased with the ease of replacing the existing filter and especialy the price.

Amana Defrost Thermostat 10442411

Amana Defrost Thermostat 10442411I bought this unit to replace the one on my Amana Model SRD21VW-P1315501WW. The refridgerator called out for a Defrost Thermostat R0161088 which is the same sensor unit with a large harness and several connectors which cost $34 and required running wires through the back wall of the freezer compartment.

My freezer kept getting stuck in a defrost cycle (ice cubes melt and then freezing back into a big chunk). To test, I cut the old one out of the existing harness, leaving about 4" inches on the thermostat. I then put the T-Stat in ice water to check for continuity and removed it to if it opened at around 40-50 degrees. The thermostat failed so I ordered this one as a replacement. Crimped on male and female connectors to the harness and the new thermostat and voila! My refridgerator was back in business.

This replaced the original amana defrost thermostat, 1/3 of the price sears wanted, it was very easy the replacedplug and play

Whirlpool W10190961 Icemaker for Refrigerator

Whirlpool W10190961 Icemaker for RefrigeratorFor those of you wondering, this is a real Whirlpool factory certified part. It arrived in a Whirlpool box, and taking the gear cover off reveals the FSP (Factory Specification Part) molded into the plastic. It isn't a Chinese knockoff, which I was worried about, since I also ordered the ice level fill circuit board at the same time and it WASN'T Whirlpool or FSP. Check my other review for that fiasco. In doing more research on these parts, the original Whirlpool or factory replacement icemaker will have a dark gray or greenish ice mold (where the water fills and ice forms). This does have that. The knockoffs will have a white mold instead.

At any rate, I haven't installed this yet, I want to wait to also install the correct ice level circuit board at the same time. Will update my review upon install and confirming this works. But for now, just being a real Whirlpool part earns it five stars.

Update 4/22/13: Installed this today, and within a minute it cycled correctly, making ice cubes later. I now have the "Acceler-ice" function activated to make a full bin of ice as quickly as possible.

GE Cafe CDWT980VSS Fully Integrated Dishwasher - Stainless Steel

GE Cafe CDWT980VSS Fully Integrated Dishwasher - Stainless Steel
  • PureClean wash system with 5-stage filtration

I adore this dishwasher! Is it weird to love an appliance so much? I bought this along with the Cafe range and microwave. It's beautiful, sleek and modern and looks great in my kitchen. The controls are on the top of the door and are very easy to understand. One of the greatest things about this dishwasher is I can fill it up with an entire container of detergent! It gives a little warning light on the control panel when the detergent starts getting low. Super convenient!

This is also the quietest dishwasher I've ever seen (heard? not heard?). Sometimes I'll forget if I started it or not and have to actually put my ear against the counter to hear if it's running. Even then, it may take a little bit to figure it out. This was a huge benefit as I live in a loft with the living room/kitchen/dining room all open.

The top rack slopes so that on one side you can put taller glasses and the other side, shorter. This allows you to get taller items in the opposite side of the lower rack, like cookie sheets.

Overall, great design, great function!

I purchased the GE CAFE dishwasher in March of 2010 and within two years the keypad stopped working completely. When a GE technician was out for repair they told me this model has a design flaw. It was designed to be installed with a 1" gap between it and the countertop so that it could release the heat so it wouldn't short out the keypad since the keypad sits at the top of the door. First of all, that was never explained when purchasing the appliance (and i did have it professionally installed), and secondly how would you raise an existing countertop by 1"? I strongly advise you stay away from this model since even if you get it repaired the problem is only going to repeat itself....over and over again. Unfortunately I'm out $1400 plus another $200 for the repair charges. Also, this dishwasher doesn't do anything spectacular, my old dishwasher that cost $300 did the same job cleaning my dishes.

Super quiet and gorgeous!! Cleans dishes extremely well, that being said I did do a little research in regards to the new low-phosphate detergents. Since getting our new dishwasher I'm really cleaning the dishes before they go in, not because the new dishwasher isn't effective but because the new low-phosphate detergents cause the food to redeposit itself on the dishes during the wash cycle. I want to preserve this gorgeous dishwasher for as long as I can....I'm in love!! Love the hidden controls and options available for cycles.

In 2011 we purchased the Cafe dishwasher and had a few problems with it such as the "low detergent" light not going off even when refilled with recommended detergent. Another thing was that the drying fan would never shut off at the end of the cycle. It would run for days if the door was left shut even with no dishes in the washer! GE was contacted and they were great to work with in trying to solve the problem. After 4 service calls in less than a year, the dishwasher was deemed "unfixable" because of some design flaws. It seems they had created this washer during a transition in models and for some reason, the parts didn't work well together. At least that was their explanation . What did GE do? They assigned us to a customer service person who helped us to get the dishwasher replaced with the newest GE model ... free of charge. The newer model was even more expensive than the first. All the service calls and replacement parts and then a new appliance did not cost us cent! They stood behind their product! We recognize that once in a while a product is faulty, but how the company handles the situation is key. GE exceeded our expectations in helping us solve the problem! The customer service person followed up with us to make sure we were happy with the new dishwasher. It's been 4 or 5 months since the new one was installed and it has performed flawlessly. I love this dishwasher. It is quiet, does a super job cleaning, and looks really sharp

We have had nothing but problems with this dishwasher. We have tried everything from Citric Acid to vinegar. Lots of different detergents, jet dry, you name it we've tried it. I'm at the point of just trying to sell it and getting the top of the line Maytag with steam cleaning that seems to have good reviews. There is no doubt in my mind that all this energy star compliance junk has caused manufactures to make junk products.

If anyone has any recommendations I'm listening. They even sent us new parts that spin, but they worked for two weeks then died. We have average water hardness, so I don't know what the problem it. White vinegar sometimes works, but still this thing even when I run the hot water before turning it one, does NOTHING TO CLEAN.

All the dishes have stains, glasses are not near clean, and have a disgusting residue. Like a bunch of fools we purchased the 10 year warranty, but I just want to get rid of this piece of junk. We have the GE Cafe stove which is pretty good, and the refrigerator which we also like, but the dishwasher does not clear at all.

Run away from GE dishwashers, my older kitchenaid was even better.
