I have used this filter and find this to be a very good filter for this cartridge type.

These little filters cannot remove everything from your refrigerator water system, you'll need a high quality reverse osmosis system for that.

Recently I found a website* that lists the actual impurities that this 4396510 filter removes, I quote:

* 99.35% of Lead at pH 6.5

* 99.31% of Lead at pH 8.5

* 96.70% of Mercury at pH 6.5

* 91.20% of Mercury at pH 8.5

* 99.93% of Asbestos

* 96.30% of Benzene

As with all built-in refrigerator water filters, the 4396510 does not remove Fluoride.

The 4396510 cartridge is tested and certified by NSF International to meet or exceed NSF/ANSI Standards 42 & 53.

The other model cartridge (4396508) does not filter quite as much as the '10' model.

It hard to tell about water filter either it is working or not. I feel better to have it. I found this is one the reasonably priced store.

4396510 is newer model of 4396508 and "p" means "pack".

We have a Sears Kenmore refrigerator model number 106.53582300 (made by Whirlpool) that we purchased from Sears. It has the round water filter in the base of the refrigerator that should be replaced every year. Sears sends post cards wanting to sell us a filter for $40 plus shipping. After some research we came across this one for less and it works superbly.

Highly recommended to save money over the Sears option.

I have a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator and have used sveral brands of replacement water filters.

I have used Kenmore 46-9010

I have used WaterSentinel WSW-1

I have used Whirlpool 4396508

(the filter being rated is the newer version of the older filter above)

The Whirlpool #4396510 is the newer version and does not need to have a gallon of water run through it after installing it (even though I did flush a liter or two through it to get the air out of the system and to ensure no leaks).

What I like about this filter is the following:

1) NSF certified/tested to tests #42 and #53 (not all filters are tested at all or do not test to #53).

2) This filter claims to removes cysts (whatever they are), but again not all filters claim to remove whatever this is... so it must be a capability that this filter or the tests above meet and allow for (again, other brands do not state, so they must not)??

What I like, is that this filter is a name brand filter for $25.00/ea, tested and certfied, ships free as it meets the minimum shipping amount due to being a 2-pack (so I have year's worth of filters since I replace every 6 months as required)... and compared to the lower price of the cheaper filters available, I do not mind paying an extra $7.00/ea for the benefits mentioned above.... for me it is worth it!!!

As mentioned above, I have purchased and used various replacement filters that all seemed to work, but for the money, this filter has all the right specifications, certifications and that it is the new/updated part number to the Whirlpool filter #4396508 which does not require a gallon of water to be run through it flush out any loose carbon particles.

This is the second batch of these refrigerator water filters I have ordered from Amazon. Any place else you buy them will charge a lot more.

However, I learned something from another review on Amazon that I'd like to pass on: My refrigerator has an indicator light system that supposedly tells when the filter should be replaced. But the indicator lights indicate only the time since they were reset, not the amount of water that has passed through the filter.

Supposedly the filter is good for 400 gallons of water. The refrigerator assumes that by the time six months have passed you will have run 400 gallons of water through the filter. Hence, six months after resetting the indicator light system, it will again show that the filter needs replacing, no matter how much (or how little) water has actually gone through the filter.

Since I use the water dispenser on the refrigerator infrequently, and since I don't use that much ice, that means I have probably been replacing the filter before it really needed to be replaced, based solely on the fact that six months had gone by since I last replaced the filter and reset the indicator lights.

Starting with this batch of filters, I will not replace a filter until the water tastes like the filter isn't doing anything. Your mileage may vary.

Description leads one to believe these are higher-end filters and they're not. These are about $22.50 ea when you buy the 4. You can buy a single one here on Amazon at $16.35. They're sub-par and do not meet standard 53 which is the reduction of Lead, Mercury, Benzene, p-dichlorobenzene,Toxaphene and Carbofuran.

What does tested for standard 42 and 53 mean anyway? It does not say it passed the test. That's like saying we tested chicken for salmonella and not saying whether any was found.

Really disappointed with Amazon for allowing deceptive vendor marketing. I thought I did not have to be a lawyer buy a water filter: "Whirlpool Refrigerator Filter" is not a "Whirlpool Filter". Yeah, I know my fault but, they should say "Water Sentinel Filter for Whirlpool refrigerator" if they want my business. I guess they're counting on people not having enough time to read the lat detail and spend two hours before ordering a water filter and then, not sending the items back cause it takes even more time. Well, these are going back and Amazon will be getting less of my money and business going forward.

This is health related item but I guess the mighty dollar comes first.

I'm a big Amazon fan but lately, some of the vendors they have are making me think twice before I blindly order from Amazon with a few clicks on my cell phone like I normally do. Losing faith in Amazon fast.

I purchased wine cooler to replace a trash compactor as part of a kitchen update. I have only owned it for three weeks. Product looks good and operates efficiently. A few months ago we ordered this ice maker. The first ice maker arrived dead on arrival. We were very discouraged as this happens much too often and normally is a hassle returning and getting credit or replacement. We communicated via e-mail with Air & Water, Inc, the vendor, and a new machine was promptly sent with a return label for the non-operative machine.

We have refrained from writing a review determining our sentiments. The verdict is in. We love it. Granted it is noisy, if left unattended the ice melts and recycles into more ice. Big deal! It makes ice and plenty of it. When first received we bagged the ice to make sure we had plenty. We couldn't keep up and we had ice in every freezer compartment. Eventually, we quit bagging and just used out of the machine. We even pour ice into our non-working refrigerator ice maker. The refrigerator ice maker allows us to have crushed ice. It's the perfect system for us.

When we go camping, we take the ice maker with us. We could even use it on the patio if we ever entertained ;>) .

It finally went south. We got less than a year out of it. Would give it less than one star now. It was great while it worked.

We take it on trips out to the river and camping trips for easy access to ice. We just plug it into the generator and refill it with water and the ice keeps coming out. At home we use the ice maker during parties to supplement ice from the freezer. It's nice because we can stay and entertain our guests instead of running to the store for ice.

We live on a sub-tropical island in Japan. It is hot here, (90+ degrees with 100% humidity), most of the year and we are an outdoor family of five. My husband and my three boys are outside all day and night except when at school, work, or sleeping and we all consume TONS of water... I go through 15 gallons of purified water a week!

Needless to say, as typical Americans, we like our ice cold but none of the refrigerators here are equipped with any kind of ice machine. There is not even close to enough space to store ice trays and an ice box in the freezer (at least not for a family of five!) even if you wanted to... which I DON'T... and I got sick of paying for over priced frozen water!

I ordered this Machine and fell in love with the fact that I FINALLY had ice!! There were a few drawbacks in the beginning. As other users stated, it did give the ice a plastic taste. I ran water through it a few times with no success so moved on to the vinegar method. It did seem to help, although there was still kind of a funny taste to the ice. The good news is that after the first, or maybe it was the second, week the ice tasted just fine and you couldn't taste anything except water! It may take a bit longer for the average family for their ice to start tasting normal as we use an inordinate amount of ice,(remember the 15 gallons of water?), but it WILL start tasting normal.

We have owned this machine for almost 3 months now and feel that it is definitely worth every penny we spent. We have never had a problem with it not functioning properly, (and I have a 2 and 3 year old who love to push buttons and wreak havoc on everything), and it makes PLENTY of ice, (We go through a LOT of ice, and although there have been times that there isn't much ice left from what the last person took after a full day of refilling sports bottles, it makes it so quickly that in 15 or 20 minutes or so it drops another tray load in the basket!).

The only down side is also an up side for me. The ice does tend to be a little softer than what comes from the freezer, but that is to be expected considering how fast it makes it... Consequently, the ice does tend to melt a little faster, but I actually like it better because I like to chew on ice and this doesn't break my teeth... plus we mostly drink water so it isn't diluting the liquid in my cup at all so I tend to like the softer ice. My husband who enjoys whiskey and cokes also likes the softer ice because he too is an ice chewer. When we need firmer, longer lasting ice for a cooler or something, we simply let the ice maker make it and we transfer it into a zip lock bag and put it in the freezer for a while, or the night before. No big deal and we didn't have to pay for over priced frozen water at the store!

In the long run, after doing the math, this machine will pay for itself by the end of next month an then will actually be saving us money!

***UPDATE***

We are going on our 6th month of having this machine and I cannot rave enough about it. With a family of five we go through tons of ice daily and this little baby has had no problem keeping up. The ice tastes great and contrary to my previous report that the ice is soft, it actually drops into the tray hard but starts to soften as it slowly melts back into the machine which in turn makes a fresh new batch. I actually have come to enjoy the ice being softer and tend to wait for it to soften before I use it because I enjoy chewing on it.

I rarely write reviews, let alone an update to one, but I can't begin to tell you how happy I am with this little machine. You won't be sorry with this purchase!

First, I would just like to say that I bought this particular item because of the positive reviews. That said, I still can't tell you how well it makes ice due to both units that were sent to me don't work. Maybe it was the military postal service's shotty handling, I don't know. Fact is, I am very disapointed. I guess I'll just have to drink warm whiskey. Second, Air and Water's customer service people are very nice, I don't mean to portray any hostility toward them. That does not make up for a below average, chinese manufactured p.o.s.

I was able to take the second unit apart and repair the electrical malfunctions, it now works great. If you are a whiskey drinker, drink fast. The ice isn't clear, so it melts faster than normal. Other than that, I love this thing. (I have no problem drinking fast);}

I'm always an advocate to protect the things I love so when I found that I could purchase a 3 year protection plan for my frozen yogurt maker I had to do it. I have the Samsung fridge this filter is supposed to be made for... and it did not fit properly in the filter dispenser. I tried several times to get it to fit, but it would not lock in correctly. Water leaked out into the fridge in a small stream. I replaced the Green Filter with my old Samsung filter and the leak stopped. I am off to buy a Samsung filter. Very disappointed.

i got 2 of these swift green filters for my Samsung BARB255 fridge. It takes a bunch of fiddling to even get the thing to lock into place properly. Even after managing to get it secured, the filter did not work at all.

I followed the instructions of soaking them first, but all to no avail. Two filters totally DOA.

These filters constantly would not lock in place and keep popping off. When you do manage to keep one in place, it leaks steadily. I tried soaking them in water for 15 minutes prior to installing as indicated on the filters but didn't have any luck. I got a pack of three and all of them were worthless.

The original design had a square plastic front cover that was designed to protect the wires and the little foam and plastic piece on the bottom. Problem was that this seemed to come out constantly as ice or other items hit it. At least that was my experience and was the complaint I've seen elsewhere. The new design incorporates the cover so there is no need for the separate piece.

Don't bother calling a repair man. With a 10mm socket to remove the door and a Philips head screwdriver to remove the 2 screws that hold the unit in place, the hole thing's a breeze. Took about 45 minutes to replace which included the time necessary to clean out my overstuffed freezer drawers.

Ice maker was not working / local distributor said it would take some 2 weeks to get a replacement on order for almost twice the price I got on from Amazon for and within 4 days. Ha Ha / Another great job with my buying experience through Amazon.

Oh the FUNNY part of the story is my ice maker started working again but I am not returning the part since it was so inexpensive. I will hold on to it and will probably need it in the future. They just don't make parts like they use to in the good old days!!

The part was ordered from amazon itself and was a genuine GE part. Replacement was pretty easy.

Apparently, sometimes the filter assembly can become clogged. Since I couldn't figure out how to unclog it, I replaced it. If anyone knows how to unclog the filter assembly, please post.) In doing so, I tripled my water flow rate!!! The water now flows like when the refrigerator was new. While low water flow can be the result of many things, I had confirmed that the problem was within the filter assembly (and not the filter itself, insufficient water supply, inlet valve, frozen water line in the door or any other part).

I couldn't get my water dispenser and ice maker to work. The pump seemed to be running but nothing would come out. I noticed that the water filter would screw in but not lock in place. I bought this item thinking that something had worn down and somehow prevented activation. I turned out to be right. There is a notch inside where you screw in the filter or bypass plug. If this isn't depressed water will not feed the filter. I could obviously see what was broken once I removed the old assembly. Easy install. This has extended the life of my refrigerator.

Some water will be in the line so be ready for that with a bowl or towel. Works great and fit perfect.

I bought this unit for my friend for her birthday and then my husband surprised me with one for Christmas.

LOVE IT! We keep it stocked with Pinot Noir at a perfect 55 degrees. We have not experienced any malfunction of the unit and our friends is working perfectly as well.

Needless to say we just unplugged it and have not tried starting it up again, but I am looking for replacements now...

Although this wine cooler is attractive-looking and compact, it is very unreliable. I've had mine for only a few months before it started acting up. Every time I pressed the temperature gauge downward to make it cooler, the worthless piece of metal only got warmer instead! That's insane.

In the small cooler department, this is the best. But, it is not without issues. I bought this model because it was the only one that claimed the ability to get down to the very low temperture that I like for my white wines. What they did not tell me is that it can only get to that temperture if you also run a "cold house". If you keep your house down below 65F you get to the low temperture advertised. It is also sort of loud in a small space. However, having said all this, I would most likely still buy the productd again.
