I live in South Louisiana and I keep this freezer under my patio, so it has to deal with some changes in temperature ... plus the humidity. This GE Chest Freezer is the right size for a small-to-medium-sized family; it is very quiet, energy-efficient (annual estimated cost of $25) and well-designed. Some may scoff at it not being frost-free but, as one who has to endure power blackouts from storms, this is one of the better features: The ice which forms inside the chest actually helps to keep it insulated and frozen for about one week. I purchased my GE freezer from Sam's Club for $177 and I believe it is a great value. I already have two refrigerator freezers, so this one just offers added freezer space for when my wife and I find bargains, or for storing a boat-load of fresh shrimp. You can't go wrong with this one.

I love it. It is just the right size for all the extra's that wouldn't fit in my refrigerator freezer which is also a GE. I am going to buy baskets tho' to put items in for easier identification. I have labels on everything with dates. So far, I am a very happy customer.

Like most everyone these days I take advantage of grocery store food sales, especially meat and chicken and never have enough freezer room. For a family of 2, we didn't need a large chest freezer, so I bought this one and it is perfect for our needs.

It's easy to get into and I have labels taped to the top of every package so I know what's in each.

Like another reviewer, I will be buying a couple of extra baskets to keep vegetable packages in smaller items.

I have the freezer in the dining room/kitchen area. We have Pergo flooring so the freezer is sitting on what could be called a large metal 'tray' with edges as I have not had to do a defrost yet and don't know what to expect.

We haven't noticed any change in the electric bill and that's a very good thing!

Plus it's QUIET! We hear it less than we do the refrigerator!

We put this freezer in our basement. The only outlet we had was a GFI, so I read the manual to see if there was any reason not to plug it into a GFI. There was nothing about plugging the freezer into a GFI in the manual. (For those of you who don't know GFI is, it is the type of outlet you have in your bathroom to create a shorter circuit so that when you drop your hair dryer into the sink you don't die. It's a circuit breaker, just at the wall instead out at your circuit breaker box.) And after putting a little food in it and going on vacation it tripped the GFI. We lost about $500 of food and we can't get the awful smell out of it. And here is where the story begins....

GE support sent a technician out to look at our freezer. He confirmed the awful smell, and plugged it in to see if if was running (and it was). He told me that I shouldn't plug it into a GFI. When I told him there was nothing in the manual he understood why I was upset. A day later GE support called me back to tell me that they would give us a "deal" of $167.50 for a new freezer (plus a shipping fee). They then informed us that we had 30 days to accept their offer (even with eight months left on the warranty) and that it was their final offer. They said that it wasn't covered because it was plugged into a GFI. I explained that the manual said nothing about GFI. They said that the manual says you have to plug it into a regular outlet. After some back and forth I asked the tech if he knew what a GFI was and he fully admitted that he didn't. I asked for his manager, which turned out the be the manager who made the decision. After talking with her a while I asked her if she knew what a GFI was and she immediately admitted that she didn't know. I got the customer service from Ultimate Electronics (where I got it from) involved). Finally GE technical support admitted that they weren't technical and would have an engineer call me. The tech who came out to us called me and we had a very short conversation because we understood each other, and, more importantly, he understood why it should be replaced. Ultimate called GE on my behalf, but they wouldn't give us anything more than this offer. The offer didn't include their shipping fee which would make it more expensive than what we originally paid. The very friendly and helpful Ultimate representative didn't know what to do to help me but they were more than willing to do what they could. A GFI won't trip unless there is a power surge from a device plugged into it. The only thing plugged into this GFI outlet was the freezer.

So we lost $500 worth of food and have a ruined $200 freezer after a couple months of use because GE won't stand behind their product. So we'll go out of our way to avoid buying any GE products after how much this $200 freezer cost us.

Bottom line, I hope you never have to call GE if this freezer fails. GE Support Case #10260539. Honestly, this is the worst customer service I think I've ever had.

Purenex 1M-4PK 1-Micron Sediment Water Filter Cartridge, 4-Pack

The item says "1 MICRON" in huge yellow letters, under that a in blue smaller print "2 LAYERS NOMINAL FILTRATION", then in tiny light grey letters it says "1st Layer 10 Micron Inner layer 5 Micron".

I am not too upset, they were only 10$.

Living in the country does have its draw backs. We started with iron water and then put in a cistern to collect rain water. It did have one problem which was some soil and leaves which were not trapped by the initial filter. But the 1 Micron filter clarified the rain water and we are absolutely spoiled to have rain water to wash dishes and clothes. The most wonderful thing about these filters is when you take a shower the water is actual clean rain water which leaves your skin and hair soft and your shower sparkling.

I selected Complete Filtration Systems from Amazon's marketplace vendors for my 4-pack. I received 4 Flow-Pro FPMB1-978 1 micron filters. I was pleasantly surprised that this part number has an NSF symbol on it. This filter is for my well water since I live in a rural area. It is replacing an Aqua Pure 5 micron filter that did a pretty good job of removing iron sediment from my well water for 9 months. The Aqua Pure cost me $15 at the local plumbing store.

Prior to the Aqua Pure 5 micron, I had a GE FXUSC 30-50 micron filter but it barely lasted 3 months.

I'll see how long the Flow-Pro lasts. I'm especially curious about how much of a flow reduction I am going to see in the next few months, since the Aqua Pure 5 micron was pretty consistent throughout its service life. At the price of $10 for 4 filters, I can afford to change a filter as often as every 3 months.

3-month update: my circa-1982 well/pump was on its way out, yet completely filled up two of these filters in the past 2 months when I overpumped the well a few times this summer. Now I'm on the 4th filter after replacing my 1-hp well pump. The filters would have lasted much longer if my well wasn't having iron/silt and pump issues. I'm still very satisfied with these filters, and just ordered another 4-pack. It's nice to have clear water coming out of the faucets and showerheads.

I bought this for my RO system which has clear containment covers so you can look at your filters and judge the need to swap them. At this price, having clean water is dirt cheap.

Other than the great price, a major pro is that each filter is individually wrapped, then the 4 are re-wrapped keeping things clean. I'm uploading a picture of the 3 filters I changed in my R.O. system after just 6 months. That doesn't seem like a long time, but please look at the uploaded photo to see the importance of changing filters regularly, including the 1 micron and the carbon block filters.

My only regret is that amazon does not stock a complete 5 micron / 1 micron 4 pack set because most all water filters start with a 5 micron to get rid of the pipe buildup, scale, and the junk the city sends you. Then they pass through a 1 micron later (along with perhaps a carbon block) to protect the r.o. membrane. So to do an effective change you really need both 5 micron and 1 micron in the same quantity for any water filter (air filters can also use these on high pressure / flow compressor installations which makes them very flexible as a filter media)

A kit with a 5 micron, the carbon block, and a 1 micron would really be nice as it would deal with 90% of the RO systems 6 month change intervals. My in line TDS meter has gone from 4 ppm output to 14 ppm so I know its time to change numerically also. Someone should kit together the 3 pieces needed for most RO systems as they are cheap and simple to buy.

I don't believe these are 1=micron sediment filters but they are as good or better than the 5-micron ones I was using. We will see how long they last between changes.

Water Sentinel WSQ-1 Refrigerator Replacement Filter, 2-Pack

In the product description it says it replaces Whirlpool filter WHKF-R-PLUS. I purchased from Amazon and it arrived promptly and in good condition. It appeared to install without a problem, however when I returned to the kitchen I found that it was leaking quite a bit. Luckily I caught it before it caused too much damage to my cabinets.

I would not recommend this to replace the Whirlpool filter WHKF-R-PLUS and I hope that Amazon will remove this from the product description before some other person ruins their kitchen.

I was able to find the actual Whirlpool filter and it has been in for one day now without leaking so it was definitely the Water Sentinel WSQ-1 that was the problem.

This filter works perfectly in my whirlpool unit and it does not leak. I will buy another because the price is unbeatable!

Being this was an add-on item, I now need to wait for the other drip pan until I order something else. Buyer beware. If I find another seller in the meantime, I will use them. Disappointed. The one I got fits. Don't know about the quality yet. The low rating is because of the deceitful nature of the description of their product.

Retro Series Microwave Oven

I bought this with only one review, so I was hesitant to purchase it. There description was is not informative, but I liked the look of the microwave and no other microwave has real great reviews, so I gave it a try.

I like it. It has a great user interface no huge keypad but very well thought out knob and a couple of buttons. Turn the knob left and one can choose the set functions; popcorn, plate, spud, etc. Turn the knob right and choose length of time. Tap the knob and voila, the microwave runs. The buttons on the bottom are for stop/cancel, setting 30 second intervals, power level (1-10) and setting the clock. It has a turntable (which I worried about). All in all I really like this microwave. It looks great on my counter top and works well. What more could one ask for?

I'll write more if it doesn't work for long, but based on the sturdiness of the door and quality of design, I expect it to last.

We loved the look of this microwave and the size is perfect for our needs. However, it didn't work. It would run for a second or two and then shut off.

Neither the manual, nor the website, have troubleshooting information. We tried numerous times to contact the manufacturer's customer service line and could never get anyone to answer the phone. Emails went unanswered. We finally gave up and returned the product for a refund. Such a shame.

Love the look of this micro, it looks as cool in person as it does online. It's sturdy, the door closes soundly, and I really liked the ease of the dials. It proves that simple can still be functional.

I did send this microwave back for a refund, though, the day after it arrived. The microwave is EXTREMELY loud, my kid came from the next room to see what the commotion was. It also shook/vibrated so hard that it shook the entire counter, we watched as it shook a small bottle across and off the edge of the counter.

It reminded me of the microwave we had in my parent's house when I was a teen, in the 1980's, with the noise level and the shaking/vibrating. Huge Bummer!

ETA 1/26/2012 Unless you've designed this machine, or own stock in the company, I sincerely hope you'll do your best to not take my review personally. Odds are I got a defective machine, but either way, there's no need to take my impersonal review of an inanimate object and start to call names, I'm reviewing the micro, not you, kind and gentle readers.

This is a cute oven. I only wish it were a little more powerful. But it's a second microwave for me, so I use the higher-wattage one if I need more power. Mostly bought it for looks! It arrived in good time and was as described.

I received this around the end of June 2012. By around the end of September 2012, it had stopped working -the timer and fan turn on, but it does not heat anything up any more. As it is a second microwave which I mostly bought for looks, I may see if it is worth repairing. But as far as functionality goes, I'm afraid they put everything into the looks and not the works. Too bad.

Loved the way it looks. Brought it home plugged it in and made myself a cup of soup in 2 1/2 minutes, everything worked great. NEXT DAY tried to nuke a frozen dinner .... the stupid thing shut off after 3-4 minutes. I figured it may have tripped a breaker, so i moved it to another outlet but it didn't come back on. After 10 minutes or so it turned itself back on, so I tried again. SAME THING, this stupid POS won't cook for more than about 3-4 minutes at a time before it overheats and shuts down. I was tempted to return it for another one until I realized there are about 10 other people who have written about the same problem. It is a shame, I really like the way it looks and I got it on sale but if it doesn't work it's going back.

I had two problems with this unit.

1) The manufacturer's packaging is inadequate for shipping (not Amazon's fault). I received two units (the second a replacement for the first), both were damaged in transit, and both have been returned. The first, the glass door was shattered, I suspect because the shelves were not well anchored inside (ironically, the manufacturer's handbook warns against shipping with loose shelves they should take their own advice). The second had a large dent in the door frame the package is simply not sturdy enough to offer adequate protection.

2) So, if you are lucky enough to get an undamaged one, is it a good product? I tried out the second one I received might have lived with the dent if I'd been satisfied. I found that although it certainly chills adequately, the fan runs continuously and generates more noise than I would care to live with.

I ultimately wound up buying an equivalent Kenwood unit, which is proving to be excellent and quiet!

My wife purchased an avanti cooler for my birthday 18 months ago. It was a bit noisy but worked. However, it stopped working so we called because it came with a two year warranty. However, when you call the company they say it isn't under warranty and wish you luck. Then when you call back to point out that they are not being truthful they tell you that will cover the compressor if you go to an authorized repair facility. However, that results in an estimate of $250 to put the free compressor if you take it to them. So save yourself a lot of agrevation and BS and avoid avanti. BEWARE

Worked well for two years then died. Very good temperature control and sound level when it worked -even more quiet now. I would not buy another Avanti product because of the poor reliability of this one. I checked the manual and it indicates that if the power doesn't come on to check my circuit breaker. I plugged another wine cooler into the same circuit and it works fine.

Whirlpool WGD8800YC Cabrio 7.6 Cu. Ft. Silver With Steam Cycle Gas Front Load Dryer

This was purchased as part of a set. I have been using it for over a month and have not encountered any problems with this dryer.

It had an attractive silver grey exterior and features a lot of different drying options which covers anything I might want to dry. It has a steam feature to prevent wrinkling which does a good job. The dryer's drum is stainless steel which is impervious to stains and the door has a plexiglas window which is nice to have since I have a tendency to check the dryer a lot. I could have probably gone with a cheaper set, but this set had a lot of features that I wanted and it wasn't flimsy and seemed better made than the other sets I looked at in the same price range.

It dries quietly and quickly and the interior is fairly large so it can accomodate a large load. It offers a lot of drying cycles though I still line dry things like lingerie. My only observation is don't pack the machine too densely unless you want wrinkly clothes, etc. Give the items enough room to circulate freely and be careful to dry only similar items together to optimize the energy saving feature.

This is probably the nicest dryer I have ever owned based on all of its features. It is also the priciest dryer I've ever bought.

Okay, at first I wanted to give this filter a 1 star rating because I thought it was horrible. It was leaking water everywhere, not working correctly, there were white particles in my water, and I thought it was a cheap piece of s***. This is most likely the reason many others here may have given this filter a low rating as well.

But after throwing many items in my kitchen in anger, and slamming my fist against the wall, I decided to read the instructions to see if there was something I missed.

*Note to buyers, always read the instructions first before you decide to install a product.*

So after reading through the instructions, I realized there were a few things I missed that I did not do.

1. You are suppose to immerse the filter in a pot of water for 15 minutes before installing (I'm not sure on the exact reason why but I believe it is to get air bubbles out).

2. After installing the filter, you need to go through like 20 cups of water in order for it to work correctly and for it to be crystal clear and drinkable.

So after much frustration and error on my end, I followed the instructions and my filter is now working beautifully. The water tasted great and is crystal clear like a Caribbean spring. This is a great water filter, at a great price, and it works great, just follow the instructions!!

I give it 5*'s baby!

Danby Deluxe Mini Fridge with Freezer (4.3cu.ft.)

I bought this from another retailer almost 9 years ago! Since then I've broken the freezer door off, but that's the only thing that has gone wrong. Every year or two you'll need to defrost the freezer, which is a pain. But that's not too bad considering the life of the product. The built-in can dispenser in the door is great and partially why I picked this model.

I bought this at Sears when I was in college. I was in college for six years, and I still have this baby in my room! It is an incredible value and it will last you forever! It holds LOTS of stuff and is as high as my bed! I recommend this for ALL dorm rooms and for anyone else in need of a personal fridge. It makes barely a peep and is reliable the entire way!

I bought this recently for 150 at the dept store with the 'bullseye' logo. I have the grey and black version. So far i'm happy with it as it does get cold enough to make ice in its mini-freezer compartment, and that was when i turned the temp control to the 2/3 setting(not even the max setting!). So make no mistake, it does get cold enough to make ice. If you're looking for a mini-fridge, temporary fridge, second fridge, single-person fridge, then this seems like a great value. I've only had it for a few weeks now, so i'll update my review if anything 'majorly bad' happens in the future(trust me, i'll be upset enough to come back and write a poor follow up if this fridge starts to breakdown in any way).

Finally, the energy guide. The energy guide included with the fridge says it uses 343 of 345kwh, and that its yearly operating costs is $28. That 343/345 is very high, but it says it is measured against other comparable fridges up to 4.4 cubic feet. This is a 4.3 cubic ft mini-fridge, so obviously it would be near the max. Other 4.3/4.4 mini-fridges use about the same amount of energy. And the Danby actually used about the same amount as a 3.3 cubic ft Avanti mini-fridge i was looking at. I don't have a bias towards one brand or the other(this ain't Ford vs Chevy, PS3 vs XBOX 360), simply just letting you know what the energy guide stats are. So compare and shop around before making a decision if this one is right for you. I have it, and think it's a good purchase(one of the biggest mini-fridges with a mini-freezer compartment!) and a good value(one of the cheapest prices for a mini-fridge).

I bought this refrigerator for my office 5 years ago. We have a tiny kitchen area and this fits easily under the counter. The freezer holds a couple of mini frozen dinners and is cold enough to make ice. We didn't notice any significant difference in our electric bills, but I didn't actually do the math, for those of you who are sticklers for that sort of thing.

The push-button defrost is nice, however I wouldn't put this refrigerator in a room that young children have access to. That red defrost button is a big temptation. When our office moved, someone's little one pushed that red button. By the time we noticed, the refrigerator was standing in a puddle of water.

Overall, this refrigerator is reliable, easy to clean and I would buy it again.

I bought this attractive little appliance for use in an airplane hangar where the occasional consumption of perishable food and cold drink storage is desirable. This quiet running compact fit the bill perfectly. Some designs in this class of refrigerator are barely capable of holding 2 six-packs of canned beverage. Why bother? This fridge with 4.3 cubic feet of internal space is generous enough to store a reasonable amount of perishable food stuffs. Just don't expect too much utility of the freezer though, as its capacity is quite small. The internal layout of the Danby is well thought out and the vertical beverage stack on the door is a welcomed plus. The upper portion of the door also includes a special clear plastic insert to accomodate up to 9 eggs, but is an easily removed option. You can even change the direction of the door swing by swapping out the reversible hinges. Sized at a reasonable 20" across, the top of my Danby refrigerator perfectly accomodates a small microwave oven and the combination of the two is hard to beat when eating a casual meal miles away from the full sized comforts of the home kitchen!

I bought this wine cooler to put under the bar top in my winery tasting room. It has functioned well and is sleek and compact and completely silent.

BUT...perhaps it is my fault but I did not notice before I bought it that the COLDEST setting it goes to, which I now understand is a function of the non-mechanical way it creates cooling, is 54 degrees! While this is adequate for dry white wines, it won't we cold enough for sweeter wines and certainly not cold enough for late harvest, dessert type wines that should be chilled to 45 degrees or so.

ALSO... be aware of two limitations caused by the very compact design:

FIRST, heavier weight (read that, more expensive) bottles with even a slightly larger diameter than standard Bordeaux bottles WILL NOT FIT in the wire racks. There is a reason why it will fit eighteen bottles in such a small space: the tolerances are VERY TIGHT and sized for grocery-store standard cabs, etc.

SECOND, opened bottles with the cork reinserted part way or with a vacuum cork WILL NOT FIT in the cooler because the depth of the cooler brings the glass door right up to the foil of the unopened bottles.

I just recieved the wine cooler. I have to say its pretty amazing. The build is top notch. Very comparable to my friends Vinotemp but hundreds $$$ less.

The Review:

The package arrived with good protection as seen in the photos below.

The used double boxes with a layer of foam in between the boxes. Then another round of padding is added to the cooler edges. The cooler was delivered in perfect condition.

After un-boxing, I did a quick check around the cooler to check out the quality. It is very nice. The brushed stainless matches my Samsung refrigerator and seems of good quality. The door hinges are solid and have no play. The window is double pane and the seal wraps around the frame with continuity which should help with the efficiency.

Looking inside of the cooler. There are chrome racks that slide in and out easily. The door handle and screws are inside. The door handle is the only part of the unit that needs assembly. It is very easy, you just lift part of the rubber seal to expose the screw holes, put the screws through, and screw down the handle via the 2 stainless steel screws.

Its a clean and easy to use setup. There is and "up" and "down" temperature control buttons and one light button, which controls the LED internal light.

Once plugged in, the thermostatic showed 74 degrees. I started my chronograph to clock the amount of time it took to drop down to 54 degrees (the lowest temperature setting).

The internal LED lighting is really cool looking. The blue light reflects off the chrome racks to appear like there are hundreds of little blue sparkly lights. The photo doesn't do justice. It is a nice look at night and should impress the friends if they come over for a drink.

The cooler took approximately 20 minutes to drop the internal temperature from 74 degrees down to 54 degrees. I think that's pretty fast for a coolant-less thermoelectric cooler. I also go my analog thermometer to gauge the accuracy of the built-in digital thermostat, its dead on accurate. One thing to note is the that since its not a wine "refrigerator" you can only get down to 54 degrees, which is perfect for both red and white wines. However, you cannot effectively store other beverages like beer and soda because they need much lower temps unless you like semi-warm beers. On the other hand, you save money on the unit (thermoelectrics are much cheaper than refrigerators) and you save money on power consumption.

The noise...5 stars! Not much noise at all. There is a slight humming. Maybe slightly louder than the electrical humming of an alarm clock.

The capacity is 18 regular sized bottles. It will hold much less if you have over-sized bottles or champagne bottles to store inside. After playing around with the wine bottle configuration. I noticed that the top shelf is the only shelf that can fit over-sized (extra girth) bottles. You can fit 3 girthy bottles on the top shelf. The rest of the shelves only fit normal sized bottles. * also notice in the photo below, my cooler actually got down to 53 degrees.

I shopped high and low for the right wine refrigerator, reading all reviews available and even consulting with friends who own one. I settled on the New Air model because it seemed to me it fulfilled all my requirements: good quality, right size, good looking and great value.

I'm very impressed with this item. It arrived in one day, and came well packaged no chances for dents or scratches. The handle was easy to install and does not compromise the door seal. The unit is light enough that one person can handle it.

I followed the instructions and let it rest two hours before plugging it in. It cooled down to my desired temperature (62') in less than an hour. It's pretty quiet but the fans are on all the time so there is a slight buzz coming from it, but nothing annoying though.

I like the fact that the thermostat can be easily accessed and that the light can be turned on and off at will as the controls for both are placed on the front of the unit. So far, I'm very happy with my purchase.

This is a beautiful product. Well constructed. Looks great. But you can hear the thing running from down the hall. It made 10 times more noise then my kitchen fridge does that is 5 times the size.

I am really disappointed with how LOUD the refrigerator operates. The humming is by no means quiet. I can hear this cooler humming from two rooms away. Worse, every time the fan runs it picks it up a notch in terms of noise. It is easily 10 to 20 times louder than my refrigerator. It is really too bad, because I really enjoy the aesthetic of the cooler and it seems to hold temperature and cool bottles well. Maybe if you live in an urban area with a lot of background noise you might not notice the sound maybe. There is nothing subtle about the hum.

This was easiest $150 dollars I ever saved. When the dryer started acting up, I went on line with the symtoms and after a couple of pages found a match. Said it was probably the switch so I went to Amazon to see if they had the switch. They did, for less than $10 so I took a chance and bought it. Took five minutes change it and it worked. Saved money and having to coordinate waiting for a serviceman. And to top it off my wife thought I was amazing.

GE appliances score lower than any other "major" brand in Consumer Reports reliability ratings, and now I know why. This switch is exactly what the seller claims it is (the OEM part), but it is a poorly designed part. The two-piece switch case quickly (one month this time) worked itself loose and arced, burning the contacts. Exactly as the previous two switches (from different sellers, trying to avoid a bad batch) did.
