I received this as a gift something I've always wanted in my home theater room. Unlike most small refrigerators, this is no "toy"...don't expect something similar to what you might find in a dorm room. No, this is a top quality, high-end appliance that fits in with any decor a high-end full sized unit shrunk down to fit under your bar or in a corner of your favorite room. If you've always wanted a fridge for your theater room, your boat, RV or your outdoor kitchen, look no further.

Construction is right up there with the best of the full-size refrigerator brands. My kitchen has a built-in Sub Zero, and I'd have to say that the KitchenAid, though only one-tenth the size, is every bit as high quality. The outer stainless steel finish is superb, and the sides, top and back are finished nicely as well. Whether recessed into a cabinet or left free-standing, you won't be disappointed with the quality and appearance. It's also available with a see-through glass door if you like that style. No matter which you choose, it's built like a tank and will be providing you with cold beverages for many, many years.

Inside, there's a unique S-shaped wire shelf that gives you simultaneous storage for tall and short objects. There's a handy glass shelf at the bottom, as well as two door racks. I mostly store beverages in mine, and this 5.7 cubic foot unit manages to hold about two dozen compact pint-sized water bottles, two 12-packs of beer or soda, six tall sparkling water or wine bottles and two dozen small drinks. As you might guess, the unit is fairly large for a compact refrigerator, so be sure it fits whatever space you have in mind for it.

Cooling performance is also very good. You set the temperature you want using the dial on the bottom of the unit, and it very rapidly chills down to the temperature you set. Of particular importance to me was the sound level: being in my home theater, I didn't want a loud and distracting unit, and here the KitchenAid doesn't disappoint. First, it is very well insulated so that it cycles on fairly infrequently, and even when it is running, there's not much more than a modest hum. Built into cabinetry (don't forget some sort of ventilation!), it is barely audible. A small tip is to install it on Sorbothane pads this prevents transmission of the noise and vibration to the floor or cabinet.

Overall, I just can't say enough good about this unit...absolutely recommended if you need this sort of thing.

So we bought a house that unfortunately didn't have room in any of the counter space for a full sized dishwasher without a complete remodel. We settled for a 18" since we don't make that many dirty dishes anyway. The unit is sexy, in my opinion. We didn't have $1,000 for an upscale Bosch or Miele compact unit so I was pleased that this one had a number of higher-end features like a stainless tub and wash settings for delicate glassware. The stainless finish is attractive and easy to keep up with nothing but a damp microfiber cloth.

I installed from scratch, with the help of my father in law who is an electrician. Installation was pretty straightforward. Be careful when you're installing the elbow on the hot water inlet, though. I tightened it a little too much and it pushed against the solenoid, jamming it, which wouldn't allow water in the first time we ran it. I backed it off a bit and it's working fine now.

Specs say this model holds 8 complete place settings, where full sized units take 10-12, I think. I'm not sure about how accurate that claim is, on average, but it does hold quite a bit enough for our needs. The manual gives diagrams suggesting how to make the most of the space, thankfully. It can still take a bit of getting used to, though. I quickly found that our large dinner plates (square, 10.25") are about 1/4" too tall to fit in the lower bin without hitting the sprayer. I think they had to set the top rack a little lower than average to allow for the weird double-stacking cup shelf feature up there. Make sure your plates are under 10" in diameter, especially if they're not round, which allows them to drop between the slats in the rack for extra clearance. The silverware trays have removable tops with slots in them to keep your spoons from spooning, etc which ensures that they get clean. You can pop them off to allow loading of larger items, too.

It's very quiet when it's running. I was worried about the fact that there were no noise ratings available anywhere, even from Danby themselves, but it's ended up being a non-issue. Our kitchen, dining room and living room are all one big open contiguous space and we can run a load of dishes without having to turn up the T.V. at the other end of the room. Much quieter than the new entry level Kenmore we had at our previous apartment.

Wash loads use a tiny amount of detergent, around a tablespoon. Our large box of Cascade will probably last us a year or more. I've found that using a rinse aid like Jet Dry is necessary for dishes to dry completely. I'm not sure if that's just because we had to run a drain line extension but the manual implies that that is the case in any situation. Jet Dry is like $4 and I've got the dispenser set on the lowest of 4 settings so I'm sure it'll last quite a while between refills. There's a salt tray for if you have hard water but we'll not be needing that.

I've put a couple of loads through it so far and they've all come out spotless, even on the economy cycle. The cycles take a long time, or at least it seems like they do I guess I never timed my previous dishwashers. Most of the cycles take about 2:45, though. The buttons only have icons on them and I find I need to keep the manual handy to remember which cycles are which but I've only had it a few days.

All in all I'm about as pleased as I can be, sans the issues with the large items fitting, which cost it that 5th star. As long as it holds up well, I give it a hearty recommendation.

I already had an 18" dishwasher (that went bad) plugged into my garbage disposal. So, I figured this wouldn't be the most difficult job to swap in the Danby, and it took 4-6 hours (lunch, & some 12oz curls maybe slowed me down here & there)

I'm a casual DIY'er, so this may be too basic for most, but for other's some (hopefully helpful) install feedback.

I also uploaded a few pics to show some details if that helps.

When buying this, just buy one of these "kits" that includes a new water input line (if you don't already have one like this, my current setup had copper pipes), and that also includes the copper 3/4" MIP elbow that you'll need (no, the dishwasher doesn't come with the elbow, you need to buy one) (or just get the elbow if you've already got a braided line): Watts D60U Universal Dishwasher Kit with 3/4-Inch FGH EL, Stainless Steel, 60-Inch. Besides that, you'll also need plumbers tape, some tools, & your beverage of choice. Oh, if you want, on Youtube there are videos of how to install a dishwasher that'll walk you through it as well. I'd say if you've already got one there that you are replacing, and you have some DIY know-how you should be able to do this pretty easy (I called and got 2 quotes, from $100-200 for the install), but got bored & figured I'd give it a try.

--Yes, the instructions for the electrical hookup on page 2 of the manual are for some other machine. On the Danby, there's a skinny green ground already under a screw, and another big green wire in the piggy tail. I just stripped another 3/8" of sheath away on the ground wire in the piggy tail, so I had plenty of exposed wire to wrap around the house's thinker gauge ground wire (spread out the thinner strands of wire when wrapping around the bigger gauge wire, so more contact points), and then used a wire cap (keep screwing the cap until it won't screw in any more). I am not an electrician, so take any advice at your own risk, but that's what my uncle (that knows his stuff) told me to do & seemed to work fine (see customer pictures)

--Yes, the Danby is very short in height, pretty much had to max out the legs. HINT: Take some white-out & mark a corner on each of the feet. Screw them in all the way. Get 1 at the correct height, and "count" the rotations up to that point (each time the white-out comes around), then just rotate the other 3 legs out the same # of rotations. Should be level as is (or pretty dang close).

--At first you are confused where to "route" the water hose & discharge hose, but once you raise up the legs you'll have tons of space underneath the dishwasher.

--The manual is literally backwards, you should start on the last page, & work backwards. Even the "checklist" before turning it on the 1st time is on page 2 :)

--The manual says to have the elbow for the water input pointing "left" but try as I might, perhaps b/c of the threading on the elbow, I couldn't get it tight (& not leaking water) in any position except pointing to the right. Oh well, the braided hose doesn't seem to have a problem with this (see the picture)

--The discharge hose on the Danby is already hooked on, and has a funky curve right where it connects, so I didn't want to bother using a different discharge hose. But, the stock discharge hose wasn't long enough to reach my garbage disposal (given that you should have a point in your discharge line "higher" than the disposal, so water doesn't run back into the dishwasher). So, I just got a coupler (3/4") and hose clamped them together. The manual said you can have a total of 10' of discharge hose which is right what I was at (if you went 15' etc not sure the pump would clear the line?) Anyways, ran a few loads, everything seems to drain just fine (see pic of the coupler as well).

Other random notes:

-don't over-tighten the elbow, might break something.

-Do NOT use your knee to back the machine into the cabinet space, the front stainless panel isn't reinforced so you could dent it. Also, don't get mad when your team loses in the playoffs and kick it.

-STAINLESS STEEL CARE: if you've already got stainless appliances, you probably already have your care routine, but something a sales guy taught me once was using a "micro-fiber" towel to apply the stainless cleaner/polish. Supposedly the micro-fibers get into the fine grain of the steel and does a better job than a normal cloth getting grease off and laying a layer of wax to protect against finger prints. Not sure if this is an urban myth, but works for me. I would put a coat of stainless cleaner/polish on right away before your dog starts throwing his slobber on it.

-Noise--definitely quieter than my old Frigidaire, but if it isn't quiet enough for you, then just use the delayed start timer, so just load up & have it run after the movies are over, no biggie.

-If you have to stop it half-way through a cycle (& its full of water), you can't just manually toggle the control to a "drain" cycle to start over. Fix I found was to run the shortest cycle (the one on the right, Rinse? its only 8 minutes).

-Be sure to show your significant other the dish loading instructions, so you don't have to fight over the best way to load it:)

-Nice that it has a spray arm on the top rack, my last dishwasher didn't, should be a big improvement.

-The dish racks on this Danby are the same width as my last Frigidaire, but they are indeed 2 inches shorter (front to back). So, yes, there is a small loss of space. But, I didn't feel like paying $300 more for a GE for just a few inches, especially since this Danby has got great reviews both here & on HD's site (and besides a few dud machines, most complaints are typical of "any" 18" dishwasher, so not sure what's not to like at this great price point...usually when you see something priced almost half of other machines it means its inferior, but all the reviewers have loved this Danby, and I don't have anything to complain about either after my first 2 loads)

-If you are looking for the Serial # for your online warranty, its not on the tag when you open the door like normal, its listed on the "right" cross-brace when you remove the kicker panel.

-The SLEEP DELAY timer is a little confusing at first, because it doesn't mark passing time by the minute, only in 30 minute decreasing intervals (so at first you'll think its not working, come back in 30 minutes, you'll see the time will have reduced by 30).

-The delivery guys were right on time, really can't beat this with Prime (free) delivery for $441, $25 universal install kit, and DIY install

Overall this is a nice little unit, which is very appealing to look at. This was a direct replacement for a old 18" dishwasher mounted into my cabinets. Will say that the over-all height of this unit vs. the old unit is a few inches (2"-3") shorter-so I had to adjust the legs quite a bit to accomodate, and now need to add baseboard moulding underneath and around the bottom run of cabinets to hide the opening/ water and electrical connection points not a big deal. Cleans dishes very well, and do recommend that you lower the top rack down to the lowest of the 2 settings, as this will gain you a bit more capacity for dishes (still less capacity than that of my old unit). Also, it should be noted that this unit does not have a heater for drying dishes, so don't be suprised if you need to open the door at the end of the cycle (ave run time 2.75hrs) to allow for air circulation to dry.

Overall very impressed, and would recommend this to anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive way to update/replace a similar unit for a stainless steel model.

I bought this a year ago and have been using it since. I did not have a dishwasher before and this little space saver is a dream! I give it 5 stars not because it is the best dishwasher ever, but because it has met and exceeded my expectations.

There are some complaints out there, but be sure to differentiate complaints about the actual model and an 18-inch energy efficient dishwasher in general. Let me address some other people's complaints:

Cycles take a long time: That is tradeoff of energy efficiency and getting Energy Star approval. It's never an issue for me. I don't run the dishwasher because I need something 'now', I run it and forget about it.

On/Off switch stopped working: Any product can have an issue. This one has an 18 month warranty, longer than the standard 12. Mine has worked perfectly for a year.

Has an on/off button: Seriously, that's a problem?

Can't fit a lot in there: With any compact dishwasher, your existing dishes might not fit exactly how you had hoped. Standard size round dishes will fit fine. I spent a few bucks for some shorter, smaller glasses that fit better in the dishwasher than my existing tall ones did.

I had mine professionally installed because I did not have an existing dishwasher. If you are replacing one the same size most people could probably do it themselves.

If you are looking for an 18 inch dishwasher at the low/mid end, this should be at the top of your list.

We replaced our broken 18 inch dishwasher with this Danby and can't believe how much smaller our loads are. We can get half the amount of glasses and no big bowls compared to our last 18 inch. Kinda sad, but it does clean well. It does have an on/off button, which I don't like. I do like the delayed start option, since we would always forget to start it before bed with our old one.

There aren't many 18 inch dishwashers out there so for the price it's seems OK. We'll see how long it lasts.

The first one of these we bought died after a few months, which, from reading reviews, seems to be a common failing among these coolers. The seller replaced it and the second one kept going. It is fairly quiet. However, it has now been a year or two, and the unit does not want to go below 56 degrees, no matter how much we punch the "lower temperature" button. This too seems a common failing among wine coolers. Also, the cooler will not accommodate the taller wine bottles, such as you find with Alsatian whites.

I purchased this on Amazon through Global Bargain as a Christmas present. The wine cooler was obviously previously opened as there is tape over all the seams. Insider there was no packing material and the corner braces were off on two sides. It was packed in the original box and shipped without being put in another outer box. Of course, it arrived damaged! What are they thinking? The cooler itself looks great and I love the fact that it cools down to 46 degrees. I really like iced apple juice, but the ice was melting before I ever finished my drink. I was going through apple juice like crazy, but never really drinking much of it. I bought this personal fridge to cut down on wasting apple juice (don't like it all watered down from melted ice). It works so well, that I can fill a 12oz glass with juice, put in a few cubes of ice, and seven hours later, the ice has not melted. Think about it...seven hours! If I leave a glass of ice and juice out for 30 minutes, the ice has melted down to little bitty bits and the juice is too watery.

I used the "Mastercool MSC52224A Infrared Thermometer in Case with FREE MSC52220 Analog Thermometer" that I bought from Amazon to check the temperature performance. The manual for the mini fridge says that it is capable of cooling to 32 (deg F) below ambient. I checked it on a hot day, a warm day, a cool day, and several times between using the digital IR thermometer and it is consistently 32-45 degrees cooler inside the fridge than the outside temperature. Even on a 90 degree day the ice did not melt and I didn't have to replace my drink. The inside temperature at the warmest spot was consistently hovering around 45 to 47 degrees (F). My drink was at around 36 to 38 degrees, depending on where I measured it.

On the days that were around 70 degrees, this fridge read temperatures close to freezing. In fact, I was amazed when I pulled out a frosty glass of apple juice. It happened only once, but still...worth mentioning.

I think the trick to getting this to work optimally is to provide several inches of space for the back end where it vents out the heat. I used the thermometer there as wellthe vent on either side exhausts at about 90 degrees (F) but at a low volume so it is not very useful as a space heater.

The unit runs quietvery quiet. It comes with both an AC adapter, and a DC lighter-socket adapter for the car. The power switch has three positionsOff (middle) to the right is 110AC, and to the left is 12VDC (car). There is a single green LED to indicate ON operation, there are two warm air exhausts on each side at the rear, and two cool air intakesone at the back plate, and one on the top at the aft end. This is why ventilation and spacing is importantdue to the proximity of the hot air exhaust and cool air intakethere needs to be room for the warm air to dissipate and not be drawn in by the cool air intake. The manual says 6 inches space all around, I've found that about half that works in my situation.

I have not tried a six-pack, or tried using it in a car. What I can say is that if you like to have a cold drink handy to sip on all day while you study, this unit is worth every penny. I have not had to waste a glass of juice because it was watered down since using this unitfor that, 5 stars easily.

This little "backup" fridge keeps 6 soda cans very cold. The look is pretty neat. My main quibble is with the latch mechanism. It's a little plastic thing that I'm afraid will break because it takes a little bit of guess work to figure out wither to pull or turn to open. (It turns.) It's perfect for a small conference room, but I'm just afraid that after long usage someone will figure out how to break it. I guess time will tell.

OK, three years later my little buddy died. The handle broke and had to be glued back on a couple of times. But finally he gave up the ghost. So much for my private stash of sodas at the office. I got my money's worth.

I purchased this for my cubicle at work. I wanted to keep water or soft drinks cold enough that I didn't need to keep heading to the cafeteria for ice. It works great for that purpose. CAUTION: It will only fit 12-oz cans of soda, and 8-oz bottles of water (these can be tricky to find). A single 16.9-oz bottle of water will only fit inside sideways, and will take up all the available space. I keep it turned on 24x7. The fan noise is very low (think White Noise). I agree with other reviewers that the latch is flimsy and seems easy to break; use it with extreme care. But overall, the price, size and functionality of this mini fridge make me a happy customer.

It cools a bottled water to a fine drinking temp. It does not do a good job of keeping food cold in office temp conditions. If the ambient temp is 75 degrees, the fridge contents are just cool. I didn't trust my tuna and mayo sandwich after realizing that...but to have a cold drink handy, it's great!

PS This thing died after about 11 months. Per customer service, the part I need to make it cool again costs more than the original price. Since all it did was sit for 11 months, longevity is NOT a strong suit for this item. Would not buy again.

If you expect refrigerator-quality cooling, this isn't for you. It's cute and quiet, but only cools to ~54F where a standard refrigerator cools to ~43F. So good enough for sodas, but not so great for dairy products!

Poor quality and expensive. GE has done it again. It is a simple plastic part that rots. A replacement one in black is less than $10.

My fridge is only a couple years old and this part already looks terrible. The plated coating is peeling off. I'm shocked that it costs this much. For this price it should actually be made from metal.

I agree with the other reviewers this is way over priced. I found the same part in black WR17X11655. It is only $5. I'm going to order that. It probably won't peel and if it does who cares its one tenth the price.

I love it!!!! The water is fresher and cleaner than before. This replaced the factory installed cartridge and the biggest issue we had was the water dispensed slower than a turtle. This cartridge fixed that, the water dispenses how it is suppose to!

Mini USB-Powered Fridge Cooler for Beverage Drink Cans in Cubicle and Home office (Red)

The Mini fridge, powered by USB, is a plastic box with a cool circle/ring shaped plate at the bottom, attached to what looks to be a heat sync with a fan. The ONLY thing this fridge will keep cool is a CANNED drink, nothing else. The fridge is designed to take away heat from only the bottom of the can. And even then, the drink does not stay very cool at all.

It's very easy to use. All you do is plug in the USB in any USB drive.

The best thing to do is have a coke or 7up (or whatever) in a regular sized fridge until it's cold. Then you can take it out and keep it cool for maybe an hour in the mini fridge, so you need to drink it pretty fast.

And the blue LED light is not bright at all.

If you're contemplating whether or not to get this product, I would say DO NOT get it. If you're looking for a mini fridge, spend a bit of extra money on something that will actually work.

Well it's initial cooling ability is pretty weak. It will keep a pre-chilled can of soda cool for a while but has a hard time cooling down a warm can. It will, but after over a day. With a few simple modifications, I was able to double it's capability for almost nothing.

Trick one was to add a larger and more powerful fan to the heat sink. The cooling element(and yes it is actually a cooling element, not just a heatsink) works on the property of dissipation, so adding a fan means it directly cools better. Trick number two, and the biggest help, was insulating it properly. Any refrigerator needs insulation to cool worth a crap, and this unit is just thin plastic. I added some thin bubble wrap/foil ducting insulation inside the box and a piece of foam covered in the same insulation in the hollow door. After these two very simple mods, the cooling got miles better and it actually manages to chill a room temp can pretty well. This thing is a great basis for a fun project, but isn't a great product on its own. They could have put more effort into it.

While it looks nice on your desk and makes people wonder what it is (and then be in awe when they actually see that it is a fridge) it doesn't cool much. Took more than 4 hours to cool a room temperature can of coke.

The real use though is to keep your beverage cool, not actually cool it.

Had to try it. Now I know. Unit pulled 4 watts according to my Kill-A-Watt meter (meter highly recommended btw,P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor, actually measures kwh usage over time)through a 110v, one amp wall-wart usb output. Fan was running, disc inside immediately became cool to touch, Peltier thermoelectric cooling IS effective, and rather intriguing, but I wrapped some good insulation around the unit, making sure to not obstruct the vents front and back, and left it overnight with a room temp can of Squirt, and a small thermometer inside. Ten hours later, the Squirt and Thermometer were at no more than 3 deg F cooler than the room. Bummer. A+ for concept, one star for lack of significant performance. "Experiment Sccessful", now I know one thing that DOES NOT WORK.

If you spend any time sitting in front of a computer, the idea of USB powered mini fridge probably has some appeal to you, especially if you are far from a regular refrigerator and a plug-in-the-wall Mini Fridge is for some reason not an option for you. No doubt the thirst-suffering keyboard-slave inventors of this little item thought they had an instant winner on their hands, but they were done in by cheap materials and science.

The science problem is worth dwelling upon; the sad truth is that hot plates will ALWAYS work MUCH better than cooling plates for a reason in addition to the fact that hot plates can make use of the waste heat from electrical resistance (either directly or as a byproduct of the Peltier effect) while cooling plates must dissipate it:

convection.

Hotter fluids rise and colder fluids fall, thus a container of any liquid placed upon a hot plate will quickly become uniformly heated while a similar container of liquid placed upon a cooling plate will get as cold as it is ever going to get at the bottom while the upper layers won't cool much at all. That's why the instructions for this item say to use 8 ounce soda pop cans even though the product was obviously originally designed for 12 ounce soda pop cans; doing so removes what will always be the warmest 1/3rd of a 12 ounce soda pop can.

It is no accident in my opinion that later (?) models of this product Portable USB Cooler and Warmer 2-in-1 come with a switch so it can be used as a hot plate as well, which function can at least be presumed to work.

There ARE ways to fight this, but doing so would require spending more on materials. aries2110, one of the top reviewers of this version of the product shows what might have been by installing a stronger fan (for dissipating waste heat) and taping some insulation to the inside, reporting a significant increase in cooling. The less handy can try setting it in front of a desk fan and putting a can insulator upside down on the can. I also noted some additional cooling but nothing approaching "refrigerator cold".

Basically, about all it is good for IMHO is SLOWING the warming up of a previously refrigerated can of soda pop more than just setting it on your desk will. I picked mine up on clearance, and I suggest you do the same,...

if you even want to bother with it.

The filters work, but it would be better if they came up with a filter that is reusable. $30 for a filter that only lasts at most two months is expensive.

this filter is designed to be replaced once per month per instructions, whereas the original was designed for long term use with regualr vaccuming.

They make so many models and brands, overlap is going to happen. I double checked with Lowes and Amazon before buying this off Amazon, and double checked the numbers since there are ones out there that are so close...

That being said, they work perfectly, and my unit is back online, doing what it should.
