GE WR62X10055 Solenoid Assembly for Refrigerator

GE WR62X10055 Solenoid Assembly for RefrigeratorDid a little research and determined the most likely culprit was this bad solenoid and Voilà, the ice door works again!

Symptoms

---------

If your icemaker seems to leak water, the flap doesn't close, the icemaker jams up and doesn't dispense ice, the door "chute" area is frosted up and/or filled with a frozen block of ice or if you see a bunch of frost on the face of the ice drawer, this solenoid is likely to be the culprit.

Cause of the problem

--------------------

This solenoid opens and closes the icemaker "flap". When the solenoid gets rusty it doesn't properly function and the flap stays open. Then air gets into the chute, frosting up the internal pathway from the icemaker drawer all the way to the door.

The Repair

----------

To replace it you simply pry the instrument cluster out, unplug the wires going to the control board, behind that is a plastic part held by 4 screws. Take them out and pull the plastic cover straight out. To the right of the door flap is this solenoid. It is held in place by 2 screws on the bottom, and a post on the top. That top post is NOT a screw but if it is rusty you might think it is. Just take out the two bottom screws and pull down hard and the solenoid will pull loose. Then flip the flap door open, reach up and lift the solenoid plunger off the door arm. It just hangs on there.

If you have this new part in hand, the whole operation takes about 5-10 minutes to replace this.

My refrigerator is a 12 year old GE GSS 25JFMC WW, and I've replaced this solenoid twice. It's a terrible design, so if your refrigerator uses this...get used to replacing the solenoid every few years. There are several models that use this solenoid, mine is just one of them.

The good news is the part is only $25 online, even less at some places, or available prime shipped from Amazon. If you buy it from a retail appliance parts store, they may charge $47 or more....buy it online instead and save.

Good luck!

5 months and no problems. I used it on a GE side by side fridge model # PSC23SGRCSS.

Install was pretty easy but getting the face plate off is tricky first time on my model. There are two holes on the bottom. Use a Phillips screwdriver to push up through holes and release latches.
