GE Compatible Refrigerator Water Filter for MWF, GWF, MWFA, GWFA, GWF06

GE Compatible Refrigerator Water Filter for MWF, GWF, MWFA, GWFA, GWF06I like to plan ahead. I purchased the product 2 or 3 months ago so I would have a replacement available when needed. So, in trying to save some money, I ordered this replacement filter for my refrigerator. I put it in yesterday and ran about 3 gallons of water through it. Unfortunately, the water thereafter tasted like it was a used cartridge. The water smelled and tasted foul. My brother-in-law happened to be visiting and I asked him to try it. He said also the water tasted much worse than water straight out of the tap. A few moments ago, I looked to see if I could return or replace it and unfortunately I can't. One thing I don't like is as soon as a product is delivered they look for a review which of course, since I didn't put it in, I couldn't write an honest review. Now I can and am doing so.

As with probably all manufacturers, any maintenance or repair parts are outrageously expensive from the manufacturer. It's nice to have third parties manufacture decent replacement parts for non-critical functions. I know, I may be alone in this, but a water filter is not a critical need for me.

We bought our fridge used and have owned it for 4yrs. No problems overall. Then the water progressively became slower and slower. I knew the filter should be changed every few months, but at $30 a pop it was not going to happen! So, it got to the point where it took forever to fill up a glass and finally decided it was time. Took a gamble and purchased the 3rd party filter. I unhooked the original (probably) filter and twisted in the new one. I probably wasn't fast enough or had enough pressure when installing the new one and got sprayed! Oh well. Chalk one up for silly stories.

Then I went to get a glass and try it out. The water pressure came with the fury of a thousand typhoons and again got sprayed. Alright, a little hyperbole, but I did get wet and I couldn't figure out what I could have done differently to avoid that situation. Maybe a rainsuit?? Again, not a big deal. Tried again and while there was stilll some very significant pressure, along with some funny color (water or filter contaminants I'm not sure...) it eventually cleared and had very quick fill rates. Sorry I didn't time fill rate pre/post installation of an 8oz glass for some hard objective data for the engineers out there. I'll work on that the next time.

As far as function, the water tastes, well like water (though I never really had a taste issue before). The speed is much quicker, but after a couple months time, it has slowed down a little. It's not annoyingly slow, but nonetheless, there is a difference. I've had no other leaks or problems and everything seems to be fine. The cartridge itself is unmarked which is fine by me. Never liked advertising much for other companies, but not many other people see the inside of my fridge.

Overall 4 stars. Would kind of prefer 3.5, but I probably had some user error in the whole process so I won't pass the blame yet. I will probably buy here again and if I have the same shower experience I may edit my review. It's a good price and I get clean water quickly.
