- RFG296HDRS
I went into a giant appliance retailer to purchase an advertised RFG297..., and was baited, and switched, to the RFG296 (because I'm not sure I can get that one, there is only one left.) The sales lady was extremely nice, and good at her craft, but did work me over a bit by showing me a unit with a Cool Pantry and skinny ice maker, then handing me literature that said the cool pantry wasn't included in mine (on page 3 in small print.)
All that said... I have a food thermometer in the fridge and it is keeping the temp steady as advertised on the digital display. Seals are good. Water is tasty. Workmanship seems solid. It's cold, quiet, and beautiful.
I have minor complaints that seem fixable by the design engineer's.
1. No egg tray? Come on Samsung, don't you realize Americans keep eggs in the fridge? And no place to put the carton except on the main shelves. The cartons don't fit in the doors. (Hence, provide me a 3x4 egg tray in the door instead.) Easy Fix. (I'll buy 3x4 egg trays when I can find ones under $20.00.)
2. LOUD when the ice falls into the ice maker. Not a big deal as the ice trays are rarely empty, but when they are, it's crashing loud. (The fridge itself is very quiet.)
3. You have to hold your cup under the water dispenser for an extra second or two after you shut it off or water drips out and onto the door. Easy to get used too, annoying that I have to.
4. This is more of a requested feature than a design flaw: Why didn't you design the water dispenser to allow for a pitcher to be left there to fill up unattended?
5. Edited: 6/28/12: The doors don't swing shut easily. I'm sure this can be improved. With many units I've owned, a little push and the door closed on its own. With this one, a little push won't cut it. Again, minor issue, but notable.
Overall, I really like the unit, and as you know, it looks great. I recommend it. I had to buy because I had my old one break down, so I wasn't as careful as I usually am, and therefore got surprised by the missing features. Pay attention to model #'s and features, and I believe you'll be happy with your purchase. I'll update this review if anything changes performance or quality wise.
