General Electric CSCP5UGXSS: GE Cafe 24.6 Cu. Ft. Counter-Depth Side-by-Side Refrigerator

General Electric CSCP5UGXSS: GE Cafe 24.6 Cu. Ft. Counter-Depth Side-by-Side Refrigerator
  • Counter-depth configuration
  • Cafe stainless steel
  • Temperature management
  • Express Chill
  • Quick Ice setting

We bought the GE Cafe refrigerator, range, dishwasher and microwave three years ago. They've all mostly performed to our expectations, until two weeks ago when our 3 yr old refrigerator stopped working. We were of course upset to have such an expensive appliance break after three years, but this type of thing can happen. It's what has happened over the past two weeks that has turned off us from this refrigerator and GE. We've had the computer changed multiple times, we've had the compressor replaced, and each time we've waited several days for appointments with a GE technician, where there was no flexibility with scheduling the appointment. In a household with two kids it's not too easy to function without a fridge, and to have GE continually be slow to respond, and not actually fix the problem (when we are PAYING for the service), has been very upsetting. It's still not fixed.

Lesson here: check the service reviews in addition to the straight product functionality.

I purchased this model from a local dealer for our kitchen remodel that we had planned for a long time. We tried to pick a line that offered the basic appliances as a set so that they match in the kitchen. The outer appearance of the Cafe series is very pleasing, but the functionality and design are horrible. My biggest complaint is with the refrigerator. Living in a warm/hot climate makes readily available ice a necessity. This was my complaint with the previous refrigerator (Maytag) that it didn't produce ice. This one is worse. Being counter depth it has an ice tray/bin that is angled up toward the dispenser, and uses a screw mechanism to carry the ice to the dispenser(uphill). This does not work well for transporting ice cubes, and they accumulate at the base of the bin. This fools the sensor into thinking it doesn't need to produce ice. Very, very poor design. Temperature settings are difficult to sustain, and sometimes it seems to change them itself. The refrigerator side is very poorly designed as well. Containers of milk and cola do not fit well, and shelf spacing seems very awkward. I feel fortunate that I have not had some of the problems others have reported. We are on our third year, and based on others we should expect issues to begin appearing(extended warranty running out). I wish I knew what to recommend, but this isn't it.
