Fridge-It Naturally Activated Charcoal Odor Absorber

One of my tenants recently vacated a unit in my apartment building. I know for a fact that the electricity was shut off in his unit for an unknown period of time, and the smell coming from his (thankfully now empty) fridge was atrocioius. I was afraid I would have to replace the fridge. First I scrubbed with bleach, and that wasn't good enough, so I put "home remedies" in the fridge for a few weeks. These odor-removing home remedies included coffee grounds, some cotton balls soaked in vanilla extract, and baking soda. I had piles of these sitting open on plates. After a week and a half or so, the fridge smelled more tolerable (from the coffee & vanilla) but you could tell it was just masking the odor, since it smelled like coffee vanilla with an underlying nasty smell. Finally I threw all those items out of the fridge, turned the fridge on, and let it run for a few days with just baking soda loose on plates and 2 fridge-its in the fridge with 2 in the freezer. After a day or two the fridge was smelling better, and the smell was GONE by the end of the week! I highly recommend this product!

I put this in my freezer and it started working right away! My ice doesn't smell or taste oniony any more. The only problem I am having is that if it is knocked into it falls off the shelf very easily because of the small hook.

Works much better than baking soda! and lasts much longer! The only beef I have is that the hanger is kind of lame and I knock it off pretty easily when rumaging through the fridge/freezer. I definately will buy it again!

"Fridge-It" is a good idea with a bad design. I purchased several of these to address stale odors from our refrigerator and freezer. Ideally, I really wanted a Whirpool refrigerator filter for our older Whirpool appliance, however, unless your unit has an integral, replaceable filter, you are out of luck and must default to an aftermarket filter. Here is the bottom line on this product:

Pros:

1. Fridge-It is aesthetically attractive if you are looking for a refrigerator filter that attracts the Pink Panther to your fridge or freezer. It's bright pink color should attract even the most non-compliant microbes and odors if for no other reason, than because they will be tasered into submission by the cardiac-inducing color.

2. Fridge-It can hang in most areas within any refrigerator or freezer. It requires no double-sided tape or other adhesives.

3. The manufacturer claims each cube can last up to 6 months.

4. Is is a convenient way to maintain odor control particularly if you store fish, onions, or sharp cheeses regularly.

Cons:

1. The design and engineering of this unit leaves much to be desired: The filter, and its housing occupies nearly 2" of horizontal space. As such, it can be intrusive, particularly if you have a smaller freezer and/or refrigerator.

2. The pink housing stands out like the Pink Panther watching over your food. A rectangular thin, white OEM filter (such as those provided by the appliance manufacturers), would offer a more efficient, effective and less intrusive delivery vehicle for processing odors.

3. The generic hook attached to the filter housing is cheap, awkward and cumbersome to properly install and hang the unit. It can and does easily fall off if you disturb the unit as you place food back into the refrigerator.

4. Don't be confused by manufacturers claims regarding product longevity: If a claim states 6 months, a reasonable estimate would be 3 months before requiring replacement. This seems to be a good time-tested barometer for assessing the effectiveness of these types of disposable filters.

5. This product processes stale refrigerator/freezer odors only marginally better than opening a fresh box of baking soda. However, the cost differential is considerable: $5.98 for one Fridge-It unit or $0.69 for one small box of baking soda-The choice is yours.
